I am deeply sympathetic to people organizing tirelessly against genocide for years, and think a degree of grace should be given in light of that context But damn does this show the limitations of a political strategy based around organizing protests against whoever happens to be in power

Marco Rubio lives in a fantasy world. Athens was defeated in the Peloponnesian Wars by Sparta following rebellions from states within the Delian League. Rubio's version of history is linear and rediculous, and in his revisionism he betrays his own lack of intelligence: "“We believe that Europe can awaken from its long slumber and rekindle the fire that was lit here millennia ago,” Rubio said, pointing to positive tendencies including increases in European defense spending, expanded manufacturing and production, and a “flurry” of new partnerships and programs.

To bolster his case, Rubio delivered a selective reading of history from antiquity to the present, saying that the values of the Ancient Greeks imbued those of later scientists and explorers, including some controversial choices including Christopher Columbus and the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, whose legacies are associated with the subjugation of Latin America. But Rubio said they, as well as many others, carried a frontier spirit that was born in antiquity. “The greatest Americans of every generation have carried the unmistakable features of their forefathers – born in Athens, formed by Rome, baptized in Christendom, hardened in the furnace of medieval Europe, endowed with the English genius for liberty, and then carried across the Atlantic to be reborn on the shores of a new world,” he said." His White Power rhetoric isn't even historically accurate. "From its inception, Athens became the League's biggest source of military power, while more and more allies preferred to pay their dues in cash. Athens began to use the League's funds for its own purposes, like the reinforcement of its naval supremacy, which led to conflicts with the less powerful allies, at times culminating in rebellions, like that of Thasos in 465 BC." Sound familiar.... theguardian.com/us-news/2026/o…
I was wondering if any NSW historians (or historians of NSW) could help me. I'm currently working with electoral rolls from 1930-1934 which divide electors up by 'Subdivisions'. I'm trying to figure out if these are the same as the Local Government Areas used in the 1933 Census. Thanks! 🗃️ #history
Those who self-host their Fediverse server: any downsides/issues I should be aware of? I'm debating moving to a GoToSocial instance. As far as I can tell, I'll be able to move all followers and whatnot with an acceptable loss, but I'm guessing there's more to it than that
there have definitely been bigger turn arounds in gaming history but it's kinda crazy how like everything people criticized about KH2 has looped around to being a beloved thing they stopped doing reaction commands because people HATED them in KH2 back in the day
solid construction of atmosphere though. it's just that whenever you rely on sensory techniques to evoke atmosphere you are relying on a specific model of sensory processing to achieve it. it makes the film more personal for people who can process it but less personal for those who can't. even if it's not for me i do deeply admire this really personalized approach to visuality. the sound design was also fucking excellent for me and is what kept me as engaged as i could be.
Bay Area peeps: I’m looking through my sample ballot and want to know your opinions! What are your thoughts on the Regional Transit Measure (RTM)? I feel like two opposing things are true…🧵
I love it when actors play against type and show that they are not one-trick ponies. Which actors have surprised you when they took a role that is different to what they are generally known for? #film #films #movies #Cinema #QuestionOfTheWeek #filmfilepod
I think TESCREAL is going too far. It implies everyone in Silicon Valley is sitting there gleefully thinking about their imminently becoming a cyborg or a mind upload. I've also seen transhumanists who don't think a so-called superintelligence is imminent.
Anyone else think it’s insane how generative AI companies haven’t been regulated on the grounds of copyright infringement? If you wanted to make Blu-ray player you have to: 1. Pay Sony a fee. 2. Load a cryptographic key to only allow signed discs to play. 3. Enforce device integrity (so no running your own software). 4. If this is compromised Sony can revoke the devices' ability to play discs. 5. Enforce region locking. 6. Enforce all the piracy protections (checking for physical and digital watermarks). 7. Enforce encrypted transfer of the content to the device (so no spying on the cable). And in the US, pirating a movie can get you fined $250,000 and jail time!

Since 1998, US copyright laws have basically been unstoppable. Then these companies come along, pirate literally everything, get fined basically nothing, and create products that even allow you to use the copyrighted material. If I went and released my own bootleg Frozen movie, Disney would have me drawn and quartered!
any AI-positive UI/UX designers nearby? Please chime in #ui #ux #ai #aiagents
So we've had years of AI coding, billions spent in terms of money and man/computing hours, are there any genuinely great AI coded aps yet? Not pre-existing projects now with AI and new bugs, not AI driven retro game ports built on other people's code for other systems that are completely unoptimised and likely never will be, I mean new thing completely from scratch built by AI that people view as a shining example of what it can do.
How Israel's relentless killing of over 1000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2025 can be called a "ceasefire" is beyond me- its brainwashing. Aljazeera noted: Israel attacked Gaza on 325 of the past 361 days, leaving only 36 days with no reported attacks, deaths or injuries.
Israel has a long history of lying, using propaganda and disinformation, so I really have no reason to believe anything they’ve ever said or claimed, about anything. They’re never wrong. They never apologize. They’re always the victim while oppressing others. That seems like a non-starter. Iran is the same but they never claimed to be an ally.
If I am old and I miss adobe/macro media fireworks for interaction design prototyping, what should I be using today?
The vibecoded Red Alert 2 recomp doesn't show a cursor or seemingly register my mouse clicks on the main menu. Whatever. I'm really interested in trying out that completely modular controller, the Beitong Pangu. Unfortunately, the only controller with rear paddles that ReWASD supports for remapping is the Xbox Elite Series 2...and my Xbox Elite Series 2 controller hasn't been able to hold a charge for several years now. I'd love to get it repaired.

I've never done ANYTHING competitively, games or otherwise. Thus, I don't really understand those controllers with 8,000 hertz polling rates and similar. On that note, will I have a better experience using a mouse with a high polling rate on a high refresh rate display? I'm using my Logitech MX Master 3 on my online PC, but given the out-of-support (on Windows) GPU that I have, my monitors are only running at 60 hertz right now. Still, given how I like many types of consumer electronics...and that the controller stick modules kinda look like mechanical keyboard switches, I find competitive controllers to at least, be a little bit interesting. I saw a YouTube video in my subscriptions comparing the latency wireless dongles across MayFlash, Brook, Gulikit, 8BitDo adapters, and similar. A DualSense Bridge on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2W was also featured in that video.
Medical embedded devices are really frequently a python/node app running on a Windows embedded PC with no real validation beyond the academic-grade code that the original proof of concept was written in. Cars are slightly better but still terrible most of the time.
I would hope so .. Chick-fil-A has built a reputation on paying well and using people to interact with customers from end to end. Here in Atlanta, they seem to move many more cars through the drive thru with multiple actual live people working than the traditional fast food units with automation. So I'm sure their costs are higher; but either their margin is similarly higher or the goodwill of this makes up for it in volume - or both. No matter what you think of the owners, the business itself is impressive. foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/chic…
Question for #btshelp - at one point in a FESTA document, Hoseok described the maknae line as his pillows and blanket (I think). Does anyone remember which FESTA this was and can point me to it?
#WordWeavers October 8th Which character is most likely to make a terrible decision for a very good reason? In the current WIP? Rosa since she hates segregation, and as her namesake she will stand up against it. In all of my works? Dr. Robert Green. He got to university without blessing of his tribe to study the whites because "one must understand the enemy to conquer them." Of course his tribe never abandoned him, but some members still hold a grudge on his decision.
Isn't it strange that the guilds and cinema groups pushed for a set number of films released each year, but nothing about ensuring workforces weren't impacted. Mergers always end up with mass layoffs. Shame on these greedy organisations.
However much competing priorities explains why explicitly Christian rock is so much worse than rock that happens to have Christian themes, there's an elephant in the room. Why doesn't this also ruin religious classical music or Anglican hymns or gospel? Or, less illustriously, Christmas music. #music

Does anyone have any tips on how to make traced line art out of a BUNCH of video frames without an iPad and stylus?
Audiobook ads are inescapable, references are awkwardly dropped into new media as if we're in an alternate reality where it's not a touchy subject, even otaku spaces are flooded with gender bend fetish art of one of a pre-teen child who they refer to by a fascist slur. It's all so desperate.
J2ME is such a fascinating gaming platform looking back upon it. You target a pathetically limited version of the JVM, and your JAR size was limited to 64kb if you wanted maximum compatibility, some of that being taken up by ad middleware. You then had a rich ecosystem of app portals rather than an app store monoculture where users found games to download (data charges may apply). Then you somehow had advertisers willing to pay money to put up a little bit of text in front of players, to the point where you could get paid a non-insignificant amount of money for putting that in your app.
Did anyone hack Devil Survivor Record Breaker to add the Durarara characters to the english version? (or alternatively an english patch for the JP version)

People who criticize this by saying that people could simply not do drugs: 1. yeah, and you could be a little nicer to the ones who do. 2. who cares if people are addicted. seriously. that's like blaming them for their cancer or their depression.
It is getting increasingly hard to decide whether a certain post or utterance is meant in earnest, or is part of a performance art project. Surely "the solution to identity theft is … a printed 2D barcode, that can be revoked" is of the latter kind? Particularly when you demonstrate that by accompanying it with a high-res photo of the to-be-revoked code. John Smith now has no valid ID document anymore. The entire "Verifiable Credentials" landscape is very slapstick, but this takes the crown.
Anyone know who designed the JT-731 Broadhorn? I'm making a solo video on it and always like to mention who made the ships in those, but can't seem to find anything about this one. I would assume Doug Chiang, Benjamin Last, or *maybe* Brian Lee, but I'd rather know than assume.
Anyone have a makeup for absolute beginners tutorial they'd like to recommend?
heating oil. how quaint. plus with all the climate change that they're causing burning all this oil, there's loads of additional heat in the atmosphere that can be extracted using a heat pump!
Kasey Kahne coming back to NASCAR is exciting, was never a huge fan of his but now that he's an unretiring 46 year old in a series who really needs some more veteran drivers I'm rooting for him. His Truck record is great (5 wins, 6 starts, worst of 2nd) but he hasn't been in one for 11 years or full-time in NASCAR since pre-Covid so I'm not expecting the moon. But he was very competitive in the NOAPS race he ran last year and he's continued to sharpen his skills as a sprint car driver during his "retirement", so I think being a top 10 driver is a realistic expectation. I miss when much of the Truck series was aging veterans of Cup and NOAPS, so I'm into it. #NASCAR #motorsport #motorsports
Is a trail cam worth it for a backyard? I've seen the same bobcat twice carrying its lunch and a coyote with half a tail multiple times. Neighbors have been spotting black bears.
I should make a #Metaljouney like @derthomas did. But I'm not sure with which band I should start. Please some recommendations :) #metal
I heard Englishness defined as 'people who have been here for centuries' on Radio 4 this morning, and it went completely unchallenged
It's nice that we're at least going back to installing heat pumps, but it's frustrating to see that heat pumps with a reversing valve so that they can also cool are not part of the discussion. I get that we're trying to avoid adding even more peaks on an already full grid, but heat waves are going to be a serious problem, and I don't see how we can get away from actively cooling homes in the worst heat waves. We should be talking about this. Then at least we could do things like regulate air con in moderate heat. nos.nl/artikel/2633964-kabinet…
Do “24 hour” pharmacies actually exist in the UK? All of the ones listed near me either (a) don’t exist, as in: appear to be a Google Maps data error, or (b) are in 24-hour Asda stores, but close at 8pm.
Does this count as manifesting? Within a few days of posting this, while I was still reviewing the suggestions from you lovely people, the app I was using updated with a complete overhaul. Now it works! Thank you all for your help! #Meds #MedicineReminder #Apps #Medicine
Trader Joe’s faux Cheetos just make you pine for a real Cheeto
Still weirds me out how eerily prescient Exploded View (by Sam McPheeters) was. Called the whole "media becomes nothing but remixes of other media" thing over a decade out. Overall the book is, eh, mid? decent? but that was a hell of a called shot to land. goodreads.com/book/show/286959…
okay genuinely what is happening I’m having to follow ppl I SWEAR I already followed back days ago. am I actually going crazy? has this happened to anyone else before? :/
It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a work environment when people said “out of pocket” when they were working off aite. Does is still mean “getting paid to day drink?”
So just maybe we should pay a bit wee less attention to prizes and think a tad bit more about the actual science, eh?
WRONG - anti-LGBT sentiment is manufactured because it is necessary to distract us from the real villians of the story, the RICH. We won't stop this shit until we remove the rampant wealth inequality. That is the only cure. Get rid of the rich, take media companies out of their control and into the hands of coops. Everything else is pissing in the wind.
Who can give me a URL to a quiz so I can learn what kind of potato I am?
Is anyone of you at least working on some interesting or novel tech project? Or did literally (almost) everyone just stop? (Hobbies included) Still kinda shocked that there was not a single project on upwork for something of that kind. #it #tech #projects

I had a pretty minor complaint to HUS (the hospital district) resolved in my favor on the third attempt. It is so frustrating that the system feels designed to wear you down so you give up before they actually investigate anything. Exercising your own rights should be made as easy as possible, and not rely on special skills or a limitless supply of patience.
