I woke up this morning with a burst blood vessel in my eye and it doesn't hurt or anything but it looks so gnarly that I don't want anyone to have to look at it. (I wore glasses during tele-therapy because it hid it a little so I didn't have to look at it.)

  2. I'm 41 today. It sounds like a big year. It sort of is, but after 40, who cares? I'm just so incredibly happy to be here, so thankful to be alive, to be able to see the world, meet all the people in it, eat all the food, do all the things. I can't wait for more. The women in my family are long-lived, and I'm looking forward to it because I feel like I am going to be curiously and voraciously in love with the world forever. Since I was a child I have always looked forward to being '40 something'. In my mind, I had no doubt that I was going to be where I want to be, doing what I want. I am. ---

I'm in Kathmandu, Nepal: two years ago, one of my oldest friends told me that he was going to gift me a birthday gift to his home city the moment I was able to travel again. Once I got word that I could, we made plans. I've known him for more than 20 years. My wife noted yesterday that I've known many of my friends for 10 - 29 years. I feel immensely lucky to have old friends everywhere who I've kept in touch with. I may not be the sort of person who goes out very frequently with friends, given that many of my friends live in different cities or countries, but I feel like I've been able to just pick up on old friendships by talking from time to time, and visiting sometimes. I feel like I'm in a new season of life. One in which exploration, adventure, and abundance are back in my life. I am surrounded by friends and family I love and trust, and I have so much joy to share. It wasn't always this way, including when I was very ill and depressed for a very long time, so this is especially special.

So effects to cut my caffeine by mixing 1/3 decaf in are not working. After an excessively long day yesterday followed by 'too over hyped to sleep' for hours my usual one morning mug had no impact on my tenancy to trip and fall this morning. Two near misses with mild bruising, then I made a second mug. About to have a third mug. In volume this is double the amount I'd usually drink by this time. Yet my brain can't do the maths on caffeine intake .. As for the rest of the week ... I have zoom meetings today and also people coming to collect two bookcases this evening. Safeguarding meeting tomorrow and then two trustee meetings Friday (first with IT people to try again to conquer MS as their authentication app won't actually authenticate me.) I'm fairly sure I need to be awake for the meetings?

Good morning from Ryazan, Russia, where Ukraine attacked the Sasta machine tool plant which is housed right next to the Yandex data center, and both are now wondering if war with Ukraine was ever a good idea. Have an excellent day in the free world. 🌞

I'm reading 3 clefs on the next concert. alto, tenor, and bass, and some cues in treble so 4 clefs. every wrong note I played at rehearsal was my brain slipping to the wrong clef 😅 ok ok there was a D# but it's not my fault B major is unreasonable

  7. I've been kinda obsessed with carabiners lately. I've put together this over-the-shoulder lanyard to hold my keys, my phone, and potentially my water bottle on occasion (for when both my hands are carrying things). I've been trying out different carabiners for this and other things. I was showing my gf a new large carabiner I got for my water bottle and she face palmed and informed me that I'm turning into a "carabiner lesbian". That's a thing apparently. #trans #lesbian

A bit belated but thank you all for reaching out, your feedback was much appreciated! I considered opening these this month but I’m in the middle of packing up my apartment and prepping for midterms so I’m planning to open these up by nov/dec when I’m not so busy instead :)

  9. Sakura jumped up onto the bed for dinner tonight and knocked off the cat food can (We feed food to her in chunks the size she can manage, and she gets 1/2 pill with evening meal.) I grabbed at the cat food can, caught it and realized a few seconds later that I'd sliced one knuckle on it. Bleh.

It has been rainy for some time now. The brooks and ditches have been full. The forest by the lake has been under water for weeks. Wondering if the water recedes before freezing. Six km run today between work. A windy day, 13-14 m/s in gusts, 9-10°C. #running

THRILLING NEWS: My company now has an office dog. One of my coworkers got surprised with a puppy as a gift, which I have many eyebrow-raising feelings about, but it's 9 weeks old and can't be left at home all day alone. Today was his first day and he's employee of the month already.

I died a little bit today when I sent a message in group chat at work letting others know my two officemates were gone for the day, accompanied by a link to Eric Carmen singing All By Myself, and one of the people I work with said, "Who's the dude singing that Celine Dion song my mother loves?" #music #genx #1970s

I rarely buy from Amazon - it's a place of last resort. This list appears to have been populated because I bought a naked portafilter and a can of La Tourangelle Pistachio Oil (I couldn't find either locally). Amazon doesn't know much more about me, and I plan to keep it that way. Duck Duck Go FTW.

Screenshot of my Amazon "About You" profile. It reads as follows - Product Preferences: Prioritizes commercial-grade equipment for home use. Interests & Hobbies: Likely makes espresso and specialty coffee. Departments: Coffee equipment. Product Preferences: Likely favors La Tourangelle brand for specialty oils. Departments: Specialty cooking oils.View full-size image

I helped my mum with applying for a bonus for her new electric car. You could only do so online and it was … not easy. The most aggravating “feature” was getting logged out (*without* saving what we had already typed in) because we took some time to figure out a correct answer. After that, I regularly checked and unchecked one of the checkboxes further down and that prevented the auto-logout. 😬

  18. I cycle around because I have a lot to work on & staying on one thing too long makes me lose interest but every time I go back to AWA I think "I really like the Major Leagues of Professional Wrestling." Outside of 2/3 fall squash matches from the studio era, it never wastes my time.

One thing most people probably don't understand about science is that there is a researcher for every question –– I was just searching for someone to provide insight on a story I'm writing and found somebody who studies the exact thing I'm writing about, in exactly the same region I'm writing about

My company has been downgrading our 401k to a worse and worse provider every year. The newest company charges a substantial fee and tried to invest my money with blackrock, so I decided to choose my funds myself. I have no knowledge, I just looked at graphs. And I have high risk tolerance. 6% into US bonds 75% vanguard total stock 19% fidelity intl sustainability Literally no idea if i'll be losing money or not. Choices vibes based

So I did a round of “AI annotator” freelance work. It’s a pretty bleak thing to put your time into. It’s the perfect storm of incompetence with people management, technical incompetence, ridiculously specific and thankless work, and hordes of people clamoring for said work. Getting a few bucks for my trouble is fine, but I would hate myself if I was forced to do this.

We took friends to our favorite local winery and a Belgian couple was there buying wine. They quickly figured I was American and asked us about trump. Their question was how trump got elected after his disastrous first term, and I never have an answer to that. We're asked that very often.

Essentially, my plan is to do the computer equivalent of moving to a cabin in the woods with a solar panel and a well I dug myself. Additionally, and for entirely unrelated reasons, I have also been considering literally moving to a literal cabin in the literal woods with a literal solar panel and well. However, I would not dig the literal well myself. That seems like the kind of thing you want an experienced person who is aware of relevant Ontario regulations to do.

Ever since I have gotten myself a camera I have practically brought it with me wherever to capture things that capture my attention. On Monday morning I got up early for work and it had rained not too long ago, making the barely lit pathways and leaves look so otherworldly~ Autumn really makes everything so pretty~ #photography
