The senate elderly woman whose eviction sparked nationwide protests over Spain's housing crisis and a political row that triggered early elections has died, according to Madrid's tenants union. Maricarmen Abascal, 87, was forcibly removed on a stretcher from her apartment of more than 70 years on 23 September after she was unable to afford rent increases. The company that owned the flat later offered to allow her to return at a lower rate - but she was unable to sign an agreement as she had been admitted to hospital.

"We regret to announce that Maricarmen passed away today," the Madrid Tenants' Union said in a statement, adding her situation marked "a turning point in the history of this country". Union spokesperson Alicia del Río said: "Speculation costs lives, and today rentierism has finished killing our colleague Maricarmen" but "her memory lives on with us". Abascal became a symbol for Spain's housing crisis following her eviction. bbc.com/news/articles/c6e3x21e…

Add your name to tell them to: + Set a date to quit coal, publish a plan to move off all fossil fuels. + Make COP31 about action. 7. Please copy and paste into the forms on the websites of your members of Congress and share with friends. congress.gov/contact-us Dear Senator / Representative - The Welsh Parliament has passed a law to make it illegal for candidates to lie during elections. I would like you to introduce similar legislation. The law prohibits the making or publishing of false or misleading statements of fact before or during an election for the purpose of helping the election of a candidate. While in Wales, the Standards of Conduct Committee oversees the rulings, in the US the Government Accounting Office, supplemented by a rotating panel of citizens, could be in charge of the determinations.

I am tired to seeing lies by elected officials repeated regularly. I am tired of AI deepfakes of candidates. I know this legislation has almost zero chance of getting out of committee, but I want you to force the conversation. Introduce the legislation. Force committee members to explain why lying to the American public is okay. Start to restore sanity and honesty to government. Please be part of the solution. #Resist #ResistOfTheDay #Lying #Wales #Cymraeg

Today in The Conversation Canada, Jeremy Wildeman of Carleton University and Aisha Ahmad of the University of Toronto explain that while a U.S. military strike on its northern neighbour sounds like an extreme “tail-risk” scenario, Prime Minister Mark Carney and top defence officials aren’t taking any chances. With the Canadian Armed Forces expanding reserve forces to 400,000 for homeland defence, Ottawa is actively scenario-planning for the unthinkable. From Ukraine’s high-tech asymmetric warfare to Iran’s strategic denial and the grim realities of insurgency, Wildeman and Ahmad delve into precisely how a mid-sized nation can deter a superpower. theconversation.com/how-canada…

  25. Southeastern will introduce its Autumn Timetable from 11 October to 12 December 2026, with changes aimed at improving reliability during seasonal conditions. Many customers will see little change, but some services will be retimed or have revised stopping patterns. Some early trains will leave one to five minutes earlier. On Victoria–Orpington services, some trains will not stop at West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill, Penge East or Kent House. Some Dartford–Cannon Street trains will skip St Johns, while Dover Priory–Victoria services will be retimed by up to eight minutes. Metro services will also see minor changes. Southeastern says the adjustments provide greater flexibility during leaf fall and wet weather, which can affect braking and acceleration. Customers are advised to check their journey before travelling. newsroom.southeasternrailway.c…
