Albums that seem like only you know about them: After The Flood is not only a beautiful package, but the music is wonderfully otherworldly (ranging from spacey electronica to blissed out alternative and lots in between). Dale Lloyd joined forces with Cindy Sharp, Windy & Carl, and many others.

  2. 15. Bahia #JohnColtrane100 Coltrane's music has sometimes be released much later than the recording date. Today's piece, “Bahia”, was recorded in 1958 but gave its title to an album that appeared in 1965, at a time where Coltrane had published much more personal music with his classic quartet. To the point that jazz critics of that time from *Record Mirror* wrote that “Talk of Coltrane being ‘anti-jazz’ must be dispelled by this little lot.” This is a composition by Ary Barroso, and the rhythmic flow is sustained by a short motive on the piano and bass and an omnipresent cascara on the ride cymbal that is announced right away. Red Garland is on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The album cover shows Coltrane on soprano saxophone but he plays tenor saxophone on that album. youtube.com/watch?v=0yZq_VVB89E

What piece of art made you feel seen before you had the language for why? Mine: going to the rock bar and the DJ playing the Vaselines. It changed the air in the room. Didn’t even know it was a Divine cover, which somehow makes it even queerer.

#StillDoinCDs The 2CD set “May You Never” is 1 of 5 compilations from 2015 of outright musical gems that were somewhat overlooked. There’s a lot of Canadian content on this Dutch issue, starting with the electrifying “September Fields” by Frazey Ford. Soul-& folk-rock highlights.

  6. I had intended to go in an entirely different direction (dub/reggae), but on my trip to the stacks, this record by The Kills demanded a spin. The Kills' No Wow is a ripper.

  7. "Summertime" was actually 80% of the backing music of the show I just watched. So, afterwards, I made Virginia sit and listen to the stunning Ella & Louis take of it. One of my most beloved takes in all of 20th century jazz. youtube.com/watch?v=2HJCN3upMHE [Edit: that link was not very good. This one is much better.]

  8. Townes Van Zandt was obviously a masterful songwriter and a true poet. But he was also a craftsman of S-tier one-liners. Featured here, 2 of his greats: --"I'll play a medley of my hit." --[possibly the GOAT]: "PICK IT ... and it won't ever heal."

I occasionally become obsessed by music I hear in adverts. Normally the music is the thing I remember most about an advert. Recently, my attention was captured by the music being used for the Twinings "But first tea" ad with the two dogs. Finally tracked it down as Pilgerfahrt by Swiss "technoparty or secret religious ritual" band #Stimmhorn. The entire album is utterly fabulous (if that kind of thing blows your flugelhorn). I'm so happy. youtube.com/watch?v=iCu8GoPES4s

When I was a little kid, I thought the lyric from Toto's Africa went: "As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like a limpus above the Serengeti" I didn't know what "a limpus" might be. I assumed it was some kind of pimple, or wart. When I finally learned they were singing "Olympus" I felt just a bit silly.

  11. 42 years ago today, October 6, 1984, with their very first single, Sawyer Brown debuted at #83 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with "Leona”. It went on to peak at #16 for two weeks and spent a total of 22 weeks on the chart. I spent an evening with a friend who was on the air at 1080 AM KTNX, and he played this song by Sawyer Brown. It stirs up memories. #vinylcommunity #music #classic #band #song #legendary #vocalgroup #countrymusic #musicians #recording #vinylcollection #musicislife

  12. Good show from Band of Horses. At Shepherd’s Bush Empire. These “evening with” shows would be great if the band played two 90 minute sets, but when they play less than two hours of music have a break and don’t have a support act, they feel like a con.

So I found the time to sit and practice my uke for a while and discovered I can play all the chords needed for Frankie by Sister Sledge one of the greatest pop songs of the 1980s. For a few brief moments, I got to experience the joy of knowing I have worked to do something I love and have gotten better, and can produce something recognisably musical. Am I great? No. Am I good? No but it doesn't matter at all, I enjoyed it thoroughly and made the world more musical for a few minutes, something everyone should get to experience.

Imagine being the sort of person who wants to take that away from people, who would treat playing an instrument as something people either can't or shouldn't do because they have a machine to sell. Coming down from that high made me think back to the interviews with the ghouls of Suno, pretending they 're contributing and democratising when all they are doing is robbing people of an experience and installing a tollbooth in a world packed with them, none of which are needed in any way, shape or form.

Between 1980 and 2010, Garden State music transformed from the soul-infused "Jersey Sound" into a worldwide powerhouse for stadium rock, indie rock, thrash metal, and hardcore. New Jersey Rock: Bands of the '80s, '90s, and '00s by Michael Gilligan. tries to list them all!

Dave Gregory on how the band's biggest single and album came about. guitarworld.com/artists/guitar… 'We knew we had three weeks to record and mix Drums And Wires, so that meant cutting two or three basic tracks a day, then overdubs and vocals. Amazingly, we did it. That’s why I like listening to the album today – because it wasn’t fussed over.'

So if you know me, you know that my favorite Grateful Dead song is Days Between (followed closely by Dark Star), and of all the post Grateful Dead versions of Days Between two specifically stand out to me. 17. Emmylou Harris: Luxury Liner (Warner Bros BSK3115, 1977) Even if this wasn’t great to listen to—and it is—Emmylou would be a hero for preaching the gospel of Gram Parsons and introducing the world to Townes Van Zandt’s “Poncho & Lefty.” Her band features James Burton, Ricky Skaggs, John Ware and Mickey Raphael. Even Dolly Parton shows up for one song. @vinylrecords #vinyl #EmmylouHarris

Jazz OTD: It's hard to pick the best of Andrew Hill's uniformly excellent 1960s Blue Note recordings, but "Compulsion!!!!!" - recorded October 8, 1965 - is certainly among the most memorable, for the intensity of the compositions and its varied instrumentation. The remarkable closing track. #Jazzsky

  19. Never an easy task, especially if the original’s a classic to begin with, but I’ve always found Talking Heads cover of “Take Me To The River” to be absolutely superb. They made it theirs. 20. 40 years ago this week, "Stairway To Heaven" by #FarCorporation entered the #Top100 at 93. It peaked at 89 on 18 Oct 1986. The band was created by the same producer as Boney M. and Milli Vanilli. Surprisingly, they are the only band to chart with this song, since #LedZeppelin never released it as a single. youtube.com/watch?v=sp1xR9EBgAQ #1980s #MusicHistory #MusicVideo

Amazing new LP 'Love You More' by The Crystal Teardrop from Midlands, UK. thecrystalteardrop.bandcamp.co… '60s psych jangle pop vibes, hints of Byrds, Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, even a bit of Fleetwood Mac. It's basically the Smithereens with a female singer. So you KNOW I'm gonna be about it. Maximum punk R&B from Thee Headcoats last nite. “Secret” gig ahead of their proper big reunion shows next year. Was like being back in the St John’s Tavern in the 90s: a riveting rollicking rock & roll jumble.

  24. #OccultOctober day 7 - windows! we're back to folk, a very October style of music in my mind. Fun fact, this was the first commercial album Bob Dylan played on! (He's not on this song, though, because there was no need for harmonica here.) Carolyn Hester - Go Way From My Window (1961)

Bassist Dan Lilker and Singer Neil Turbin were replaced with Frank Bello and Joey Belladonna, creating the "Classic" Anthrax Line-Up I mention here Dan Lilker again, because with Nuclear Assault and Stormtroopers of Death (which included Scott Ian and Charlie Benante from Anthrax) he made his share of Thrash Metal classics. musiccloud.io/v8NWzzUE #thrashmetal #metal

(I've slowly been reviewing their whole catalog - I got tripped up on The Creatures' Feast and Blue Sunshine by side project The Glove also took a while.) New #review today: "When compared to the previous releases I’ve heard by Spanish drummer #XaviReija, this Electric Quintet album is, perhaps ironically, a bit less electric, leaning more towards a smoother #jazz sound.
