Art

  • My favourite paintings, no.67 Harold Gilman, Portrait of a Black Gardener (1905). Harold Gilman's painting offers some social commentary (the gardeners bare feet, and physical occupation) while according the man some dignity; he is presented as lost in thought, and in (unforced) repose. The depiction of British Blacks has a long (and often difficult) history, but this painting represents the beginning of a more positive shift that would grow across the C20th. #art #TodaysPainting

This is good. Untitled Ape's Epic Adventure by Steven Tillotson. Recommend to me by the much missed GN expert Steve Walsh who a couple of you may have known. The artwork is great. The story is perhaps a little dry for a 13yr old but there's an almost 100% chance I'm over thinking.

Film & TV

There are SO many great songs from SO many great movies to choose from, but I have to give it to The Circle of Life from The Lion King. The second the film starts and this song permeates your senses, you KNOW you're about to witness a masterpiece.

Primetime about Chris Hanssen by A24 is an incredible movie and you should watch it. As someone who saw To Catch A Predator back in the day and always found just something about it critical, the movie exposes so much about the predatory industry of supposed predator catching.

Business

  • @bwaber@hci.social

First was an excellent conversation between @annmlipton and Michael Levin on the bonkers appraisal strategy some investors are using around M&A transactions on the Shareholder Primacy podcast. There's also a great segment on the types of activist investors. Highly recommend youtu.be/2ILbOuiB36k?is=a5nZ5p… (2/4)

AI

  • @mortenbay.bsky.social

Bluesky is a great place to follow folks with smart, scholarly insight into AI and its effect on society. If you want to hear what many of us think summed up in a more accessible way, I recommend Eric Morrison of Western Canada.

  • I'm home sick from work today & just watched the #PBS documentary _Ghost In The Machine_ about the problematic origins of the concept of "intelligence" and how they are directly reflected in modern #AI. Excellent stuff--highly recommended.

Tech

  • great video from Baldur Bjarnason Software developers are not okay www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsEp... i think tech folx who are noping out of the modern tech industry should go back to what folx used to do -- start their OWN things, make their OWN products, make their OWN companies

Just got these on recommendation from @philipnorton42 (people keep sending him free headphones to review 😂) ... for the price they are *incredible*. nothing.tech/products/cmf-buds… (He actually recommended the 2a, but the 2 is slightly "better" on paper and the same price at the moment - plus I preferred the pale green colour.) #music

  • Why direnv at all: it loads and unloads a project's environment as you move between directories. Env vars, PATH additions, and the virtualenv all live in one .envrc in the repo, so there is no "did I activate the right venv?" and no settings leaking from one project into the next. It works with many different shells, different languages, different project shapes, and you can customize it as needed. It is a tremendously useful tool. Strong recommendation from me. A one-time `direnv allow` is the trust step, and direnv asks again whenever the .envrc changes. #direnv #DevTools #Shell

This is a critical interview with a former UN chief who spent his career in Israel and Gaza. We each have an obligation to watch it youtu.be/9pVbqwnmSuM?...

Enjoyed this thread. Have always wanted a duffle coat but have never gotten around to buying one. Gloverall makes a model called the Monty that I've long admired.
