I find it amazing how Ace Combat manages to make playing the game feel like hype moments and aura, but then is staggeringly up-front with it's anti-war messaging, to the point that it feels pretty bad to read the after action reports. Some of the radio dialogue in the game is genuinely horrifying.

J2ME is such a fascinating gaming platform looking back upon it. You target a pathetically limited version of the JVM, and your JAR size was limited to 64kb if you wanted maximum compatibility, some of that being taken up by ad middleware. You then had a rich ecosystem of app portals rather than an app store monoculture where users found games to download (data charges may apply). Then you somehow had advertisers willing to pay money to put up a little bit of text in front of players, to the point where you could get paid a non-insignificant amount of money for putting that in your app.

Some inside basball for people who like statistics Date to Die For was 94% positive on steam by ~2 to 3 weeks after launch. And it stayed there for two. years. That 94% has haunted me like the Tell Tale Heart. I know its just a label for a 1% increase, but feels good, man. Feels good.

Elite for the MSX computer was an excellent but overlooked version of the game. It had a colourful display and fast-moving graphics, albeit quite lo-res. A full complement of ships plus five absorbing missions all combined to make this the 7th best version of Elite of all time!

Hit credits on Fortune's Weave. It's a really exceptional game, at the same time massive in scope and size and extremely incomplete. I already find myself thinking about "what if I did another Theodora run", but I really need to stop and go play something else, after 105 hours 😅. My MVP pictured.

Third year doing the Majora's Mask in GBC demake art. Showing the full Romani Ranch side quests. I took liberties of the milk delivery part. While fighting the Gorman brothers in the cart with the bow could be done in GBC, I'd imagine a sword fight on horseback is more in the style of the game boy.

Interesting point I heard in an interview with a voice actor. He mentioned his work is not that hard in the moment because he has 25 years of experience and knows exactly what the writers want from him. He navigates it through his deep understanding of shows, writers and audiences. I feel that maps out beautifully to game translation. People always focus on characters and puns and funny accents. Which are important but fall inside a larger meta level of knowing what the real intention behind those words. Which -say- tells you how a large character in a narrative game has a lot of leeway for characterization, while a quip from an NPC in a tutorial should stay light and UI should be as unobtrusive as possible. I'm here to serve the game.

one of my favourite things about majoras mask is that you have try to save a dying guy and fail. this shows you one of the saddest sequences in the game his final message is to write down his song on his grave. and when you do bury him and make a gravestone. the song turns out to be a tutorial.

The Sega Saturn USB controller arrived, so now I can do Genesis games with 6 buttons and Sega Saturn games. I've never had a Sega console before the Genesis Mini in the past two months, so I have no nostalgia and after looking through the games catalog, I think I can say this about Saturn: - Some creative stuff on it otherwise unavailable, but if it was available on PS, get it there - They should've stuck to 2D at that point in time - 3D anywhere at the time was ass, but especially here

Witcher 3 *is* my cup of tea. I bought it in about 2015 and never really got into it, but I’m all in now. All those people who listened to me rattling on about Skyrim did tell me. When I think about it, I think the only post-Lucasarts Star Wars game I enjoyed was Squadrons. And it was flawed, but it was cool in VR and it touched on Nostalgia for the older space fighter sims.

It's so weird to me that she requires a level 3 support on Theodora's route when you have her sister Lilian with you by default/some unique dialogue when talking to her. I am trying to run her as a healer since she has some neat spells but this is not one of them. Does luck make it work more often?

Been glowing all day because of this review of Galatea. I especially love that it understands the central design trick I braided into the rules: how your gameplay strategy must change partway through even though the game itself hasn’t changed.

One of my favorite bits of AC: Shadows is how Naoe can be on her way to go murder a bunch of unruly ronin but will stop to make a painting of some bunnies. Like, “I may be a killer but I’m not heartless!” #Gaming #AsassinsCreed

While we sometimes joke about the Scion A-team's lack of diversity, I don't think this should distract from the fact that the Scions as a whole are intentionally diverse and Minfilia's finale speech touches upon it, and what that all says for the themes of the game.

Video games have always been luxury items. I would maybe get a full price game or two for birthdays and christmas but it was rentals and the bargain bins for the rest of the year. Never mind the cost of the hardware needed to play them.

Completed Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive. I'll be honest, for a game that encourages going fast, the level design seems to have an habit of punishing you for doing so, especially when going for 100%. Still an alright game though.

Like, I found a copy of the Goodman Games archival reissue of Temple of Elemental Evil and it's clear that they have *no idea* what it is they're doing. It's mostly a cleaned up re-issue of the original module with an uninspired 5e adaptation hanging out the back. Then it's some undigested archival material and then some interviews, but does it involve anyone who actually worked on the project at the time? No. The closest is an interview with one of the artists but it's about their career

Silent Hill 2 & 3 often get held up as some of the best looking games ever made for the PS2, but I don’t think I appreciated what an incredible looking game Silent Hill 1 was. Frame rate issues aside, that game is a PS1 stunner.

this is how i feel about hogwarts legacy. that game is only 3 years old. transphobes will say 'it has sold 5 million copies!' or whatever but i've never seen that game not being massively reduced in price. not that hard to sell x million copies when you've basically been giving it away for 3 years.

Removed the seed system. Instead, you dump fertilizer on different substrates and the right seed gets used. Spinach uses water, so I had an excuse to redraw it in a krakty setup. Between phytomining, kratky, cloth pots, and sand-based hydroponics, I'm happy with the ideas I've shoved in.

Last night's #boardgames included Tales of the Arthurian Knights. Although it's similar to Vantage - another choose your own adventure game - I liked this much more. You pick up and develop skills that are genuinely useful, and statuses that are not (one of our number became accursed, mad and obsessed). And there's a really big book with proper story telling. We played a shortish competitive game, but it can be co-op (and longer). Would definitely play again.
