Questions you can answer

204 people asked something today: for advice, a recommendation or an opinion. These are questions our model is sure are real questions, picked from every post that passed our filters, one per person and spread across topics. A good answer is one of the most useful things you can post.

  1. I was wondering if any NSW historians (or historians of NSW) could help me. I'm currently working with electoral rolls from 1930-1934 which divide electors up by 'Subdivisions'. I'm trying to figure out if these are the same as the Local Government Areas used in the 1933 Census. Thanks! 🗃️ #history

Those who self-host their Fediverse server: any downsides/issues I should be aware of? I'm debating moving to a GoToSocial instance. As far as I can tell, I'll be able to move all followers and whatnot with an acceptable loss, but I'm guessing there's more to it than that

So we've had years of AI coding, billions spent in terms of money and man/computing hours, are there any genuinely great AI coded aps yet? Not pre-existing projects now with AI and new bugs, not AI driven retro game ports built on other people's code for other systems that are completely unoptimised and likely never will be, I mean new thing completely from scratch built by AI that people view as a shining example of what it can do.

  4. The vibecoded Red Alert 2 recomp doesn't show a cursor or seemingly register my mouse clicks on the main menu. Whatever. I'm really interested in trying out that completely modular controller, the Beitong Pangu. Unfortunately, the only controller with rear paddles that ReWASD supports for remapping is the Xbox Elite Series 2...and my Xbox Elite Series 2 controller hasn't been able to hold a charge for several years now. I'd love to get it repaired.

I've never done ANYTHING competitively, games or otherwise. Thus, I don't really understand those controllers with 8,000 hertz polling rates and similar. On that note, will I have a better experience using a mouse with a high polling rate on a high refresh rate display? I'm using my Logitech MX Master 3 on my online PC, but given the out-of-support (on Windows) GPU that I have, my monitors are only running at 60 hertz right now. Still, given how I like many types of consumer electronics...and that the controller stick modules kinda look like mechanical keyboard switches, I find competitive controllers to at least, be a little bit interesting. I saw a YouTube video in my subscriptions comparing the latency wireless dongles across MayFlash, Brook, Gulikit, 8BitDo adapters, and similar. A DualSense Bridge on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2W was also featured in that video.

  5. #WordWeavers October 8th Which character is most likely to make a terrible decision for a very good reason? In the current WIP? Rosa since she hates segregation, and as her namesake she will stand up against it. In all of my works? Dr. Robert Green. He got to university without blessing of his tribe to study the whites because "one must understand the enemy to conquer them." Of course his tribe never abandoned him, but some members still hold a grudge on his decision.

  6. Anyone know who designed the JT-731 Broadhorn? I'm making a solo video on it and always like to mention who made the ships in those, but can't seem to find anything about this one. I would assume Doug Chiang, Benjamin Last, or *maybe* Brian Lee, but I'd rather know than assume.

Do “24 hour” pharmacies actually exist in the UK? All of the ones listed near me either (a) don’t exist, as in: appear to be a Google Maps data error, or (b) are in 24-hour Asda stores, but close at 8pm.

  8. @ThunderHoneySnow@mas.to

Does this count as manifesting? Within a few days of posting this, while I was still reviewing the suggestions from you lovely people, the app I was using updated with a complete overhaul. Now it works! Thank you all for your help! #Meds #MedicineReminder #Apps #Medicine

  9. We know the rare 20th Century Fox Archives logo? The one was a still graphic (drawn) render. What if it was an on-screen logo by Flip Your Lid, then Blue-Sky Studios, and later Picturemill in 20th Century Fox Archives to either 20th Century Studios Archives or 20th Century Archives? What would YOU pick? Crafted on ChatGPT & Gemini.

People who feel they actually save time by coding with AI: what are you actually making? Every time I'm convinced to dip my toe in this environment, it can't solve any problems of a mildly esoteric nature - that is, anything I might need help with.

  11. @em_makes@mastodon.world

would free credits change your stack? i'd still want the paid bill to make sense. anthropic's new startup offer includes $1,000 in api credits for approved companies. that's room to test a small product, though i'd price the same workload without the subsidy before getting attached. would you experiment or fund what already works? [source](techcrunch.com/2026/10/06/anth…)

  12. May I ask: have any of you played with the deepseek harness? I’ve heard that it’s pretty good, I tried it one time and it seemed to be pretty accessible although I should probably try it again. What was cool was when I pressed the tab key it would give me a lot of verbose information about what I was highlighted on which I personally liked. Like it even told me how many tokens a turn used and stuff like what the heck?

  13. @burnunit.mom

WANTED. ALIVE. if you know these people please introduce me to one or more of them? I would like to write a song about them. WANTED ALIVE.

by Paul Lehr couldn't find a title. I think this has a spooky feel? Maybe it has the same sort of aesthetic as a sort of 60s - 70s science fiction that scared me when I was a kid. It's dark and there are evil-looking implements being used and idk I don't get a definite good guy sense from this character - that could be the cape and helmet of an evil alien villain. Weird energies flying around that don't seem normal, and maybe a vision of hell behind them. I'm spooked! 🤣 #art #scifiArt #evilVillain #probe #helmet #hellscape #space #spooky

New author on this blue app and already wondering if I’m doing this right. Am I supposed to post about my book? Talk about writing? Share random thoughts at 2 a.m.? Writers who have been here for a while… what actually works on Threads? I’m taking notes.

  16. So we have reached the final quarter of 2026. When you stop and look at things, is 2026 the worst year for the gaming industry ever? Does 2025 still take the cake? Share your thoughts on @giantbomb.com! Link: forum.giantbomb.com/topic/785/we... #games #gaming #gamenews #gamingnews #giantbomb

long shot, any lawyers in the fandom knowledgeable in US trademark law that would be willing to field a question? I'd like to get some advice and it would be great to have someone in or near the fandom to check on a thought. not urgent; "choice between two options" kinda thing

  18. @w_pettersson@toot.cat

So is #rfc5424 aka structured logging well supported these days? I can't find much on support for it, only people saying that "lumberjack is next" but that also doesn't seem to be supported well either. What's a decent protocol for remote structured logging these days?

  19. Is there a standard "I made this with AI" content warning that we can encourage people to use, so I can filter them out and save the disappointment of finding out halfway through reading about a project? I guess if others choose that as a method, that's up to them, but personally I have very little interest in reading about it from that point onwards. The enthusiasm just drops away sharply for me once that comes out. It seems more and more common in #RetroComputing atm unfortunately.

Content warningWon’t someone discuss the Iliad with me?!

Ok is anyone on here into the #classics or #hellenism? Cause what is the deal with Achilles? Like, he seems to operate in a totally different social context from everyone else. 1. He’s the only man who expresses any sense of like “why would I fight in this war? My life has value” 2. When he does fight he’s fucking bonkers 3. Then he does these games where he resolves all these conflicts peacefully, makes sure everyone feels valued, which doesn’t seem like a thing anyone else sees as worth doing Or am I misreading? Totally possible. But he seems like an enigmatic figure to me, not just an angry pouting rage-aholic. Also if there are good scholarly discussions of him as a character I would love a source or two! #literature #ancientGreece
