I'm curious about supermarket mardown policies; my local Woolworths will markdown 1kg of mince which is nearing its Use By date, by $1 or $2, or more. The local Coles will mark their equivalent product down by 17 cents. In general, when I look at the parsimonious and stingy cents reduction of the Coles markdowns, I wonder why they bother. Is this corporate policy, individual manager, individual worker printing the new stickers, or what determining the price reductions?

I would hope so .. Chick-fil-A has built a reputation on paying well and using people to interact with customers from end to end. Here in Atlanta, they seem to move many more cars through the drive thru with multiple actual live people working than the traditional fast food units with automation. So I'm sure their costs are higher; but either their margin is similarly higher or the goodwill of this makes up for it in volume - or both. The hardest thing to do in your financial life is creating margin for yourself. The easiest way to do it is to automate it. Ideally that margin is gone before your check is ever cut to you. Think of it like the U.S. government showed up and increased your tax bill by 10%. It isn't optional.

[2/2] cut. Algorithmic wage computation is the flip side of personalized pricing. The company that controls the algorithm has the advantage and can use it against workers and customers simultaneously. This should be illegal to use with either workers or customers (or both). Making employees bid against each other (with whoever accepts the lowest wage being the "winner") should also be illegal.

Someone pointed out we (tech workers) had a lot of leverage in 2020 and 2021, but we squandered it. They were not wrong. Perhaps now, while there is still time, we should make one last push for a union? Looking at what is happening to software developers, I think if we aren't careful, that'll be the fate of many of us soon. I am a senior pen tester. I've done one assessment in the last six months because the slop machine is doing them now. While I've switched to threat modeling and other things, I'm taking a huge gamble hoping my company won't just decide to offload my position to the harness. I've been in a union before, and I know they aren't perfect, but we've got nothing right now! Thoughts and prayers? That does not feel like a winning strategy. Unions could fight against slop machines, and give us the means of pushing back. But do we have the will to do it?
