You think choosing a Fediverse server is hard? Try uploading your passport. So I tried Gander. Before you’re allowed to post, you need to verify your humanity. You can do that through an organization you’re associated with, such as your place of employment. Not part of an organization that can verify you? Then you’re directed to Canada Post’s Identity+ app, which requires proof of aliveness and uploading your Canadian passport. And as we’ve all learned from the Fediverse, friction prevents community growth. If you’re not familiar with Gander, it’s a made-in-Canada social network aimed at Canadians, in part as an alternative to American-dominated social media.

It’s based on AT Protocol, and apparently you can view content from Bluesky. But beyond the verification hurdle, the app clearly isn’t ready for prime time. There are numerous obvious bugs. For example, while I was composing a post, it lost my cursor and wouldn’t scroll downward as I kept writing. I also think that if Gander is going to survive, it needs to integrate with the Canadian Fediverse. There’s already an established community here. Gander doesn’t have one yet.

Back in my day you couldn't create an App Store In-App Event celebrating iPad support and actually mention "iPad". For iPhone Duo I'm happy to report that is no longer the case.

We are in a different moment, economically. Back then, earning user confidence was necessary to sell the product. And, in the world of dial-up, most people had multiple vendors to choose from. Nowadays, because of regulatory capture, one maybe has one or two broadband vendors available, and they (usually) all suck because always-on internet is a necessary utility for a middle-class household. So, it's all rent-seeking and cutting costs, which often means intentionally sacrificing quality.

  4. I am very impressed with Pracht's ability to optimize apps for performance. Adding caching, ISG, and image optimizations can turn an average-speed app into one that gets a perfect Lighthouse mobile score. Link to code: github.com/MaxwellCohen...

  5. I managed to see three cars, two of which were Teslas, run red lights in a single day. Shouldn’t Teslas be able to alert the driver that they’re about to run a red? (Not that I believe in FSD, but if they’re going that way anyways…)

If the iPhone Duo has the main camera sensor of the 17e, purely in terms of size (1/2.55”), that’ll put it on par with the 11 Pro & 12 Pro If it has the sensor of the Air (1/1.56”), that’ll put it between the 13 Pro (1/1.7”) & 14 Pro (1/1.28”)

Medical embedded devices are really frequently a python/node app running on a Windows embedded PC with no real validation beyond the academic-grade code that the original proof of concept was written in. Cars are slightly better but still terrible most of the time.

  9. Reminder that Zuckerberg began Facebook in college as a medium for male students to rate the "hotness" of their unsuspecting female co-students. Today, Meta AI converts innocent photos of young girls into kiddie-porn & Meta glasses are used for sexual harassment. Mark Zuckerberg hasn't grown up.

kinda wild that margaret hamilton had to coin the term "software engineering" to get her team's work a budget line at nasa. 100 people landed humans on the moon with 64kb and hand-woven core rope memory.

  11. An odd take: While I admire Margaret Hamilton, it has less to do with her undoubted technical chops, and more to do with her willingness to be a symbol, an icon, a photograph, a meme. When I came to the geek trade in 1980, there were *lots* of women. The first two hardcore systems programmers I ever met were women. I didn't need Hamilton to look up to, I already had two serious geek women to learn from. That changed. There are many fewer women in the trade today than there were back then.

After looking a little deeper, it seems like gunicorn, hypercorn, granian, daphne, and waitress all handle this. I didn't check uwsgi or others. There's a bit of indirection since some of them build on other protocol libraries. But this is only one of many cases, and even after having worked on Flask for over a decade I still have no idea what the assumptions are or how consistently they're applied. I didn't even know this was an assumption until refactoring some code in Werkzeug today (which turns out to be unnecessary if all the servers are handling it). #python #flask

  • The only long-term market for Google Playground's tech is spammers/scammers. Tech enthusiasts will try it for a few weeks before realizing they have no good ideas for games, but this is a gift to spammers who don't even have to bash together an asset flip anymore to make a convincing game build. "an early experiment designed to make game creation more approachable and ignite everyday creativity." There may have been an argument in the early days of computing when you'd have to purchase a compiler, it was an investment to throw coins at Borland and then have to learn coding. Not anymore. What sucks is Google knows its market shifted, just like how nvidia knew its market switched to cryptominers and now data centres. Of course we creatives are going to reject it. Google knows it's lying. We aren't the market, aside from a few dumb saps. The real money is in massive spam operations. #gamedev #google #googleplayground

  • It's tempting to view this as an unconditionally positive Robin Hood situation because fuck Adobe, and I admit I fell for it for about five minutes. Considering the amount of reliance on generative AI, hard pass. & the fact that this was even possible has scary implications for data security.

  • It’s hard for me to imagine these incidents as anything other than incentivized “negligence” for how the headlines seem to sensationalize the “capability” of their products. But maybe their employees really do just lack security fundamentals (or the culture to prioritize them)? It’s frustrating to think about either way..

I find the Liquid Glass material really odd when layered, e.g. Find My has both a Plus Button and the Tab Bar layered atop a sheet and it just doesn't look good at any transparency setting.

should probably migrate my account to a PDS that isn't run by cryptofascist techbro pricks but: when bluesky inc runs out of money and winds this down the network will in no way be "decentralized" enough to salvage it

What do you want the new default styling to be for HTML fieldset? Here’s what it’s been forever — a box around things, with the legend text placed over the middle of the line at the top left. (See developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/W... for more.)
