Russia is continuing its attacks on Ukrainian book publishing, captured so well in the story from just a few days ago. "The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury." (Marcus Aurelius)

  2. Eritrean soldiers fought alongside the Ethiopian army from 2020-2022 against the same Tigrayan rebels they are now suddenly allied with, committing some of the conflict's worst atrocities against Tigrayan civilians including gang rapes, massacres and ethnic cleansing (which I documented for VICE in 2021 see link) Now they are back, having switched sides. Why? Because there are no permanent enemies, only permanent interests. War...is...vile. vice.com/en/article/they-start…

After the Ethiopian army's push into Tigray and capture of Mekele, Eritrean soldiers have now unsurprisingly intervened on behalf of the Ethiopian rebel alliance. Ethiopia responded by attacking them with drones near the border town of Zalambessa. Reporting by my good friend Yemane Nagish.

All Israel's colonies in Palestinian territory violate international law. Israel divides them into two categories: the ones Israel has officially authorized, and the ones it has not (though in practice it winks at them anyway). I am not sure whether "illegal" here covers all of these colonies or only the ones Israel has not officially authorized. The

No amount of time is going to allow me to forgive what they have done to my people. Murderers, every one of them. Every mother that birthed a russian soldier is a murderer to me.

Today in The Conversation Canada, Jeremy Wildeman of Carleton University and Aisha Ahmad of the University of Toronto explain that while a U.S. military strike on its northern neighbour sounds like an extreme “tail-risk” scenario, Prime Minister Mark Carney and top defence officials aren’t taking any chances. With the Canadian Armed Forces expanding reserve forces to 400,000 for homeland defence, Ottawa is actively scenario-planning for the unthinkable. From Ukraine’s high-tech asymmetric warfare to Iran’s strategic denial and the grim realities of insurgency, Wildeman and Ahmad delve into precisely how a mid-sized nation can deter a superpower. theconversation.com/how-canada…

Try to convince Nato countries that it will be damaging for them if they continue to support Ukraine? Create tensions in Nato as they argue about how/whether to respond? Provoke a military response so that the Russian people rally round? Go out in a blaze of glory? All of the above?

Well worth reading David’s trenchant and realistic take on current UK/EU talks. They are not a high priority for the EU, which will naturally protect its and its members’ interests, so while there is no animosity toward the UK, the UK should not expect either immediate attention or any special deal.

Israel has a long history of lying, using propaganda and disinformation, so I really have no reason to believe anything they’ve ever said or claimed, about anything. They’re never wrong. They never apologize. They’re always the victim while oppressing others. That seems like a non-starter. Iran is the same but they never claimed to be an ally.

The Hamas 40 beheaded babies hoax is a series of allegations, since refuted, that Hamas killed and beheaded dozens of babies and toddlers during the October 7 attacks. The hoax is argued by critics of Israel to be an example of atrocity propaganda and evidence that Israel is waging a war on truth during the Gaza war. Joe Biden CATEGORICALLY stated in a press conference that he had seen "confirmed pictures of terrorists beheading children" AFTER the Israeli #Netanyahu's spokesman had used the same language. Tzipi Hotovely, Israel’s ambassador to the UK, repeated claims about "beheaded babies" following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas.

Whilst Hamas's attack on civilians is repugnant, wicked, evil, and rightly should be condemned, it is important to remember how and why it was allowed to happen and, in many respects, as I comment here, how the psyche of the people of Israel and the rest of the world was deliberately manipulated with falsehoods. But above all of this: rest in peace, all those who passed.
