The senate elderly woman whose eviction sparked nationwide protests over Spain's housing crisis and a political row that triggered early elections has died, according to Madrid's tenants union. Maricarmen Abascal, 87, was forcibly removed on a stretcher from her apartment of more than 70 years on 23 September after she was unable to afford rent increases. The company that owned the flat later offered to allow her to return at a lower rate - but she was unable to sign an agreement as she had been admitted to hospital.

"We regret to announce that Maricarmen passed away today," the Madrid Tenants' Union said in a statement, adding her situation marked "a turning point in the history of this country". Union spokesperson Alicia del Río said: "Speculation costs lives, and today rentierism has finished killing our colleague Maricarmen" but "her memory lives on with us". Abascal became a symbol for Spain's housing crisis following her eviction. bbc.com/news/articles/c6e3x21e…

The huge amount of money being spent on races makes things almost impossible for downballot candidates. Knock on doors? There have been 10 Collins/Jackson canvassers there before me and now people are pissy. Send mailers? I literally got 9 of them in my mailbox yesterday.

  7. I'm still mulling the ballot question about nonpartisan judges races. I used to a real election-system nerd, so I wonder what this reform will get us. First, DeKalb and about 2/3 of GA counties already uses the nonpartisan option. I'm glad for that - partisan primaries are harmful in electorates that heavily favor one party -- the primary is the real election, and many voters are excluded.

    Show more of this post

However, in balanced electorates, primary elections let the general public contribute to narrowing the filed to two main candidates, rather than leaving it to party insiders. The runoff elections addresses that problem to some extent (it's not essential to coordinate a majority before the election). But even with runoffs, I wonder if the 'nonpartisan' election addresses the problems that it's backers say it does (avoiding incentive/perception of partisanship). I think I'd love to see a Condorcet system for electing judges. sgp.jhu.edu/primers/condorcet-… #Georgia #elections #judiciary

I see on Facebook and other social media that some people are expressing concern that some Liberal MPs in Toronto (all 24 Toronto MPs are Liberal) have endorsed the right-wing candidate for Mayor, Brad Bradford, in the #TorontoElection. There have always been “Blue Grits” but by-and-large they kept their heads down when Justin Trudeau was the PM (eexcept to grumble about the deficit once in a while). I assume with Mark Carney in charge the wraps are off, and they feel safe stepping into the light of day.

    Show more of this post

I also assume that there’s some partisan feeling involved, as the incumbent Olivia Chow is NDP (don’t kid yourself, many Liberals despise the NDP and the same feeling often runs in opposite directions.) I understand that it’s a concern, but it should be no surprise that some Liberals are more comfortable with the prospect of a reactionary candidate like Bradford as Mayor than Chow. This underlines why the Liberal party can never be considered a genuinely progressive party. 1/2

  17. From the ACB: At the request of Senator Gillibrand, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report regarding disability employment and federal contractors. Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibits disability discrimination by federal contractors and also requires some contractors to take proactive steps to employ and promote people with disabilities. The Department of Labor (DOL) is responsible for oversight of federal contractors' compliance with Section 503. The GAO report found that since January of 2025, the DOL has pulled back on oversight activities regarding Section 503.

For example, the workforce dedicated to compliance at DOL has been dramatically reduced, and audits of some contractors have been suspended entirely. Morning, all, "Authorities have not yet said whether they will try again to execute Pike." It is curious that legal systems like America's (and ours) have rules about Double Jeopardy; prohibitions on trying someone for the same alleged crime twice, but no such rules against executing the same person multiple times for the same crime. One of the fundamental tenets of justice and the rule of law that the Untied Kingdom enjoyed while it was a member of the European Union was a prohibition on capital punishment. We couldn't have resumed hanging prisoners and have remained in the EU. 33. if democracy survives in US there are many fixes and upgrades we should do one of them, in my judgment, is to switch merit-weighted voting. no more "1 person, 1 vote, equal weight to each". each person's vote should have a different weight (using a points system) reflecting the objective merits of both the voter in question, and, the candidate they vote for would not be perfect, but much closer to it than what we have in place now, which is nuts, and has been abused, repeatedly

Ontario is really backwards for a lot of reasons, and one of them is that we're talking about tearing out bike lanes when what's called for (in addition to transit, yes) is something like "low-impact-vehicle lanes" - lanes where bikes e- or otherwise, scooters, cargo trikes or any other light-electric vehicles can get around physically separated from cars. This is obviously needed in our cities, clearly a good idea, and will cause the car-brained among us to lose their god damn minds.

Marco Rubio lives in a fantasy world. Athens was defeated in the Peloponnesian Wars by Sparta following rebellions from states within the Delian League. Rubio's version of history is linear and rediculous, and in his revisionism he betrays his own lack of intelligence: "“We believe that Europe can awaken from its long slumber and rekindle the fire that was lit here millennia ago,” Rubio said, pointing to positive tendencies including increases in European defense spending, expanded manufacturing and production, and a “flurry” of new partnerships and programs.

    Show more of this post

To bolster his case, Rubio delivered a selective reading of history from antiquity to the present, saying that the values of the Ancient Greeks imbued those of later scientists and explorers, including some controversial choices including Christopher Columbus and the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, whose legacies are associated with the subjugation of Latin America. But Rubio said they, as well as many others, carried a frontier spirit that was born in antiquity. “The greatest Americans of every generation have carried the unmistakable features of their forefathers – born in Athens, formed by Rome, baptized in Christendom, hardened in the furnace of medieval Europe, endowed with the English genius for liberty, and then carried across the Atlantic to be reborn on the shores of a new world,” he said." His White Power rhetoric isn't even historically accurate. "From its inception, Athens became the League's biggest source of military power, while more and more allies preferred to pay their dues in cash. Athens began to use the League's funds for its own purposes, like the reinforcement of its naval supremacy, which led to conflicts with the less powerful allies, at times culminating in rebellions, like that of Thasos in 465 BC." Sound familiar.... theguardian.com/us-news/2026/o…

I cycled this stretch of road yesterday and it's very narrow - it seems like it would be hard to fit an on-road bike lane of a reasonable size (protected by plastic bollards, probably).
