How it works

  1. I got a quilted blanket from my mom's friend as a wedding gift and my tuxedo cat LOVES it like the highlight of her day is when I lay on the couch under this quilt and she will literally come running from across the room and then just lay on me and purr for hours. These were all taken weeks apart.

Out in Cornwall for a couple of days. The Choughs have been gr8! Also a few Wheatears, lots of Mipits, linnets & a few Ripits. Numbers of Ravens and other corvids &, unfortunately, I also found the victims of a dog attack. Two dead, two wounded sheep. Lots of Fox Moth caterpillars. #UKBirding

  3. The other day, my wife was doing something unrelated to the cat. Obviously, this offended the cat greatly as adult humans are required to give the cat treats when they are present in the kitchen. So he sit-stands behind her and yells. Then, receiving no response, apparently decides that being outside of her field of vision might be the issue, he comes around to sit-stand beside her and yells again. It was about then that I picked him up, snuggled him, and paid him his snacks—on top of some uneaten snacks already in his food dish. #CatsOfMastodon

Three good things: 1. I spotted an avocado under the car seat and it is perfectly ripe and part of lunch. 2. Beautiful display at the library for migratory birds. 3. Cats sleeping or playing quietly. #3goodthings

this scrappy kitten Lucy Fur leaves us tomorrow afternoon. it’s been 15 years of skittery moulinex work, i guess she deserves her Big Rest. she’s the cat the kids have had effectively all their lives (Jerry was more my cat) so lots of emotions. 💔

  6. When Sean first came home, he wasn't sure he wanted to leave my bedroom, much less come downstairs. I thought, "Well, little guy got dumped in a cardboard box in the rain and maybe he thinks people suck and only wants 3 hots & a cot - and I will give him the best 3 hots & a cot I can." I'm so glad he decided we were OK, and loves to snooze next to me - but even if he didn't, he'd still have the best food, roof, & bed I could give him, and I'd still love him to bits.

Spider threads are fluttering in the sun in our yard. The pilots are getting ready for takeoff. So I followed one of the threads and took a closer look at one of them. Cute Jumping spider, Carrhotus Xanthogramma. #homeentomology #spider #iNaturalist

I've been rescuing praying mantises all week from my two mischievous cats. The cats touch them w/their paws and back off when the mantises' boxing stances scare them. Here's one I gently placed on my tall citronella plant just now, with curious culprits in the background. #PrayingMantis #Cats

  9. I have started taking care of strays when I moved to Greece 11 years ago. I began with adopting Boubou and only a handful of strays right in front of my door. Now I cover a meal a day for a dozen food spots in my neighborhood with water bowls and little shelters and my home is always filled with

Cleaning out a closet, we found one of the kids’ karate belts from when they were younger. In an effort to make things more exciting for Biscuit T. Dog, my wife tied the belt around his oblately spherical chicken simulacrum so we could like drag it and such for chasing. Biscuit is…confused. He always has his chicken in his mouth, takes it outside with him when he goes pee, etc. Anyway now he very gingerly nudges his chicken until he can pick it up without having any of the belt in his mouth.

  11. I took the trash to the road, then stood frowning at the front of my house and wishing I'd turned on the under-deck lighting as I was certain there was a package there. That's when a movement caught my eye. I turned towards it, prompting another movement. Was the light making me see things or was there something in the dark? "Meow!" Meow? Crap. That didn't sound like Talvi, but had he slipped out when I did? I rushed back to the house to find the door securely shut. But only Novi met me when I came in. With Talvi not coming when called, I turned on the front lights and went back out, meowing. "Meow!" came the response.

I followed the meow to the top of the driveway, trying to figure out how to route the cat back to the house rather than scaring him into running off. I lowered into a couch, "Meow?" As the cat before me replied with their own meow, I realized this cat was not shaped like my cat. This cat was larger, one of the largest house cats I've seen. But unlike the other unusually large house cats I've met, they had short hair. Hair that was some shade of light brown... My husband is convinced I had a conversation with a bobcat. All I know is the feline is probably sad I found the delivery and brought it inside. The box was full of cat food. #cats #MountainLife

  • Poor Joule. The monthly test of the tornado siren in the little park next door to our yard is occurring. It is deafening. Joule ran in and lay down at my feet. The noise is actually louder in this room than elsewhere in the house because it faces out onto the park. Ah well, another minute and it will be over until next month (unless there's a tornado before then).

with the arrival of the hamster my wife has taken to telling our aged Pug 'you're still the main pet' repeatedly. I think that the Pug will now start to doubt himself and his position in the pecking order with these reassurances.

I wish I didn't know about euthanasia. I feel cowardly for even having those thoughts during cat's departure. I'm glad we were stronger and stayed with her until her last breath, let her die at home surrounded by love and people she knew and trusted, petting her even after she left.

Big dog is at the emergency vet right now. Fever, wobbling, standing funny, all of a sudden. Scary. Fever down but still acting wobbly and I'll. Healthy this afternoon.

Every since one of my dogs passed away nearly a year a half ago, I've fear losing my oldest one. He became grief stricken, slower, lost his hearing, and had worsening vision. He doesn't feel like the dog I've loved for over 11 and a half years, after today, I know he won't be here much longer...

  • Took this last night. My first thought was "I wonder what that lizard thinks since its food is bigger than him" and my second thought was "what if cows were that much bigger than humans". I am very stupid.
