You can't see it here, but Es Devlin's extraordinary set projections were a permanent chorus in Jasper Holten's wonderfully cynical, deathly Don Giovanni @royaloperahouse.bsky.social
Finally got this album last Bandcamp day. uhhhghgghgg it is SO GOOD. like the pixies with Springsteen up front. Wings of fire, football, and dans transmission are the highlights. I hope they tour the states next year, though I wouldn’t blame em for skipping
For 50 years, John Mellencamp has been trying to be for the Midwest what Bruce Springsteen has been for the Northeast: The voice of the average blue-collar guy, struggling to live in, and understand, the world around him. He frequently succeeds.
2001 actually pretty solid: Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You, The Avalanches' Since I Left You, Fugazi's The Argument, Wilco's Yankee etc, Gillian Welch's Time etc, The Microphones' The Glow Pt 2, Aphex Twin's drukQs, Bjork's Vespertine, Tim Hecker's Haunt Me etc, Moldy Peaches, cLOUDDEAD, Hood...
Tonight is a nice survey of Clara Schumann's works with Orli Shaham, plus Robert's piano quintet with the Juilliard String Quartet #music #concert #Merkin
Played my son Prophecy at 1420 MHz from the new Boards of Canada album. He hadn't previously heard a note of their music, had no idea of the mythology surrounding them, yet immediately described the song as satanic. This is the power of Inferno.
I died a little bit today when I sent a message in group chat at work letting others know my two officemates were gone for the day, accompanied by a link to Eric Carmen singing All By Myself, and one of the people I work with said, "Who's the dude singing that Celine Dion song my mother loves?" #music #genx #1970s
I can't pick *one* so I'm not sure this is my *favorite*, but I've been a little obsessed with Cigarettes After Sex lately and I think I might, *might* actually prefer this to the Radiohead original even though I seem to remember it bouncing off me the very first time I heard it.
Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. "When everything feels like the movies, yeah you bleed just to know every line." The actual lyric is "to know you're alive" but my version makes sense with the movies reference, if life is a movie, you want to know what's coming next, you'd bleed for that knowledge

Tonight, the ferocious prog-psych trio SLIFT headlined Le Poisson Rouge, a good place to see French rock bands this fall. This is “A Storm Of Wings,” a Bulgakov-inspired standout from their new LP ‘Fantasia’ built on chugging riffs, shifting time signatures, and Jean Fossat’s impressive wail.

I heard an interview with Diana Ross on the radio about this song. She said eloquently that she always thought it was a weird ass song and the record companies wanted them to sound like The Beatles, this was during their psychedelic era. She said that we told them they're looking for a sound and a feeling we found long before The Beatles were born. It is a weird ass gem song. They made the sound theirs. Queens. Fabula Rasa by Tam Quam Tabula Rasa, released in 2001 on Old Europa Cafe in Italy. "Tam Quam Tabula Rasa is a legendary post-industrial group from Rapallo, Italy. They play mysterious, monotonic, ritualistic drone and industrial music, that could be truly classified as "archaic drone" or "archaic noise". Tam Quam Tabula Rasa was mainly active in the cassette underground culture of the late 1980s / early '90s. Members of the group also founded a side-project called Ultima Rota Carri. In 2022 T.Q.T.R became active again and released of the Egomachia album, these days the project exists as a one-man-band guided by Luca Ferrarini" Last FM #TamQuamTabulaRasa #IndustrialMusic #Ambient #DarkAmbient #Drone #Music
Janelle Monae. Dirty Computer just blew me away; it's operating on so many more levels than an album with such catchy hits would normally need to. Also her level of effortless cool throughout the entirety of the album-length companion film is awe-inspiring. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLPV...

Formerly known as "Burned Faceless", "Smoke and Burn" makes its debut on 1/18/1995 at the Georgia Theater in Athens, GA. Soon to follow was the first live performance of brute. with Vic Chesnutt. Jah bless Fred Adams for capturing history for us.
A friend recommended the book about "In Utero", which talks about how the album was made. I already discovered a couple of songs, Sappy being an incredible one. #Nirvana #Grunge
Blinded by the light I for years did not understand what “Rolled up like a douche in the corner with a knife” meant. Sometime in my 20s I found out it was “Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night”.

For years I thought that Eurydice in the Broadway version of Chant said “Lookin’ high and lookin’ low / For the food and firewood, I know / We need to find an iamb.” Like, as in they both needed to find the right metrical foot for Orpheus’s song so he could be done and their problems would end.
TIL: «With an estimated equivalent of more than 80 million albums sold, Enya is one of the world's best-selling music artists.» I have to check out some of her best selling albums just to see. Due to my sailing adventures, the song “Orinoco Flow” was always in my library but I couldn’t name another song from memory. Even though I feel like being aware of her as an artist for decades. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enya
Amazing funky, lounge-jazz from Yukihiro Takahashi, who was the third member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. It only recently occurred to me that I hadn't really checked out his solo catalog. Saravah (1978) is a mood. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQJ2...
It's #MusicWomenWednesday! Time for some Japanese Surf Rock! I was really into GO!GO!7188 during my time at university and from time to time a listen to some of their songs to get a little dose of nostalgia. Sadly, they disbanded in 2012. A John Williams score which seldom seems to rate mention, which is truly sad. It's one of his earlier symphonic scores and contains all sorts of hints of themes and melodies which would later become instantly recognizable in other movie scores. youtu.be/fPCpccUo8Lw?...
I thought 2000s rock died in 2000s but then I listened to Pierce The Veil
today's very surprising discovery is that there's a second, very good video for frontier psychiatrist by the avalanches, made for an earlier version of the song which has samples they ultimately couldn't get clearance for. having to dump this must have been a gut punch for them youtu.be/oB0ZYTji3KA
I didn’t get into Phoebe Bridgers until this summer. God do I wish I first heard this album in 2020 when it came out. It would have been on repeat so hard as I navigated my depression the rest of that year.

It's an ancient musical instrument referenced in a 60s song by Donovan. Maybe you have hurdy gurdy about it?
Had interesting conversations as usual with a dear Irish friend and at some point we were talking about how great music used to be... She mentioned Leonard Cohen. I, thought of R.E.M. (among others of course). Can't believe "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" is 30 years old: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BC0...

Ashes In The Orchard The song creates a somber atmosphere through vivid imagery, featuring a haunting cello and piano. It explores themes of loss, isolation, and fragile hope, portraying scenes of decay and mourning. The tension builds through rising violins and a plea for clarity, encapsulating the world's stillness amid uncertainty and waiting. pencilmag.men/2026/10/07/ashes…
Sharing this again as it's quite a big deal for me. The audiovisual essay includes me listening to Tomorrow Never Knows with Don, and features recordings by Lana Del Rey, Pet Shop Boys and Bryan Ferry - in fact I synced a scene from Mad Men to his cover of 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'.
We are solidly in October, which means it is once again time to remind you all to go watch this fantastic recording of a Polish youth orchestra's rendition of Danse Macabre, where the solo has been moved from the traditional violin to meolodic percussion instruments. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNMz...
🧵 1/2 Yuqi -- I Like You youtu.be/PL9o0xj7RyM?si=L28-Bf… I like Yuqi's voice, think she looks charming here, especially with regard to her hair, and find the song enjoyable. How should it be classified? Although Yuqi 's fame rests on her work as Kpop idol, I hesitate to call this Kpop, if only because the lyrics are Chinese and English. Perhaps more importantly, it does not seem have the performance potential of those Kpop songs that I enjoy the most. It could be a nice little western pop song -- and there's nothing wrong with that!

I struggle with the pronunciation of Yuqi's name. The parochial English speaker part of me keeps wanting to rhyme her name with "spooky", but then a more cosmopolitan linguistic superego intervenes to remind me that she is Chinese and and so the name should sound something like "Yoo Chee". However, I hear Koreans pronouncing it in quite a different way... perhaps I should defer to... #Pop #Yuqi #ILikeYou #Kpop #Cpop #Chinese
Journey's "Separate Ways" Actual lyric: "Here we stand / Worlds apart, hearts broken in two ..." What I heard: "Here we stand / We're a powerhouse broken in two ..." (It didn't make sense to me, but it was the '80s when a lot of lyrics made no sense even when you heard them correctly, so ...)
When I was in high school I worked at Burger King for about a year and a half. I would finish up well after midnight, then, still keyed up from being 17, I would drive around with this album on VERY LOUD, INDEED with the windows down because there were no girls to be found anywhere in a small, Midwestern town at that hour Now, when I'm constantly awoken by the local college kids at 3am, I think Karma's a bitch and roll over and go back to sleep youtube.com/watch?v=b_Q6FxWEqE…

You shouldn't do much to Sondheim's 'Into the Woods' - like Puccini, he's such a master of timing that the outline only needs honouring. First time for me seeing Jordan Fein's Bridge Theatre production, now in the West End. Strong singing and acting throughout. theartsdesk.com/theatre/wood...
Strange how #music and #film are both limited by the quality of the #writing. There are so many gorgeous, breathtaking songs and #movies that have completely pointless #lyrics or dialogue. In music, the singer's passionate, gripping delivery often masks a really bland or clumsy piece of placeholder #poetry.
