Margaret Hamilton obit at the NY Times. Mentions the incident during the Apollo 11 landing when Buzz Aldrin flipped a switch, that caused a CPU overload. The software survived because Hamilton had anticipated and simulated such a scenario and had added logic to prioritize essential tasks over others. Paul Curto, who nominated Hamilton for a NASA Space Act Award, called Hamilton's work "the foundation for ultra-reliable software design." nytimes.com/2026/10/07/obituar… archive.ph/kD3F4 4/n

SafeToNet are in @privateeyenews.bsky.social, with the magazine reporting on Paul Moore's investigation into child safety software. This brief story only scratches the surface of what Paul found - like a 20% false negative rate on identifying and blocking pornographic pictures.

  3. (1/2) Earlier this year, we published independent research showing how Microsoft continues to undermine browser choice through tactics that steer people toward Edge, even after they’ve chosen another browser. More than 100 days ago, we not only published the findings, we actually spoke directly with Microsoft. The answer? They will do more to respect people’s choices only where the law requires it, like in the EU.

  4. Another NERD patent. This one describes how Switch 2 transmits its higher-res motion control data through the lower-res Switch 1 API, and how it handles Bluetooth packet losses. • Switch 2 controller samples motion at ~960Hz, but the Bluetooth link runs at a “legacy” rate of 200Hz (5ms cycle) 1/

TIL about the `Proxy-Status` HTTP header (RFC 9209). TL;DR: it lets proxies report how they handled a request and what went wrong. rfc-editor.org/info/rfc9209/ It's a shame it's not widely adopted. In a world full of reverse proxies and complex distributed systems, this kind of visibility can be crucial. I can think of a couple of use cases for this at work. #proxy #http

Merge JPEG Files Without Generation Loss: What Re-Saving Actually Costs TIL every re-save of a JPEG is a lossy event, so careless stacking makes photos visibly softer. When you need to merge JPEG files into one comparison sheet, route around the recompression instead of crossing your fingers. Zoom in and the difference is real.
