How it works

  1. So I've considered using something like Lumin, to handle email, but I just don't think it would work for me. Most of my emails are requests to review documents, complete forms, or respond to tickets. Apps like this are for triage only.

I used to assume it was a myth that getting YouTube Premium would make YouTube quicker but I can confirm it's an actual thing 🤯 The second I bought it, the website started loading quicker. Same with the app.

Those who self-host their Fediverse server: any downsides/issues I should be aware of? I'm debating moving to a GoToSocial instance. As far as I can tell, I'll be able to move all followers and whatnot with an acceptable loss, but I'm guessing there's more to it than that

  6. @puppethead@ieji.de

I've been using an older build of my app on a machine and it has completely different behavior than recent, near-release builds. Different enough that I'm rethinking features. Looking into my commit history I don't see anything being done differently since the beginning, so I swear Apple must have changed the behavior of the API I'm using. For the better, but still. It feels like the closer one gets to release the longer it takes to finish. #macOSDev

Stop relying on generic searches. Use Google Dorking (`filetype:pdf` + sensitive keywords) to find exposed docs, then pivot to Shodan to map vulnerable IoT devices. Pro-tip: Use `has_archived:yes` in Google to find deleted pages. #OSINT #InfoSec

This is an ambitious open-source project: ArtCraft is building seven free alternatives to Adobe's creative suite. PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft and the rest target workflows from Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, Acrobat, After Effects and InDesign. They're written from scratch in Rust, run locally, and support Linux. Several also run in a browser. getartcraft.com/apps #Linux #OpenSource #Rust #ArtCraft

Once again I want to write a message to one of the numerous ND people I loosely "hold contact" with. And same old, same old, once again I have to check if I have them in Signal, Telegram, Threema, Matrix, ... Now... Attempts of creating multi-chat/network clients never really took off. I'm also ok with having multiple clients installed. But maybe if there was some sort of common API they all could provide on localhost, with discoverability, so that we still could have one single frontend?

Speaking of faffing about with other tools, I still want to create a swift-native tool that on-the-fly generates slippy map tiles (yes, that’s the name of the tech. You can blame google in the mid 2000s for this) from the FAA sectional data. It’ll allow me to save on storage for this little video generator, I won’t have to spend so long generating tiles that I’ll never use, and I can reuse the tech for that EFB app I still want to make. I didn’t do that for this because one thing at a time.

university computers (the only way for me to access the printing software) have auto-updated, so now when you turn them on they spend 15 minutes slowly vomiting Liquid Glass settings windows onto your screen, and then tell you the printer software doesn't work anymore

  12. I'm still in the "I'd rather use text-based programming languages than a visual editor for the majority of the stuff" camp (even this very simple stuff I did turns into an "I need to zoom out to find which nodes to connect" mess). However, drag-and-drop editing with zero setup is pretty convenient. And I guess the more important thing is that "programming language pretending to be something else" can be very attractive for people who consider themself non-programmers.

The metadata within the datasets also informs the composition. A table in one dataset, for example, may declare that it appends rows to an earlier dataset declaration, or it may outright replace that table. retrofit honors this and composes a snapshot with exactly what was requested.

2/5 Every reference i checked uses an integrated PMIC (Power Management IC) which handles everything at once. I decided against it partially because i couldn't find a reliable source for it... but also because it ironically seemd a lot. It just had so many components and so many function i didn't know about. I know this is not the correct path, but have all discrete components just feels better, and i think will let me debug eventual problems easier. #hardware #kicad #opensource #electronics #embedded

Is something tech seriously worth than printers? We bought a new printer that should be compatible with apple print and everything. Turns out it doesn't print from phones nor apple mac osx nor Linux via ipp. Ipp is not working, and the only thing that works is the plain old lpd with generic gutenprint drivers. What are printer folks doing with their "innovations"? I am fine with lpd and ppd files and likely I like it more than the "magic" things just don't work....

Why exactly are the betas for the steam controller tied to being in the beta steam client Am I the only one who things them not being different options is a lil weird? Especially since it can connect between something like my main computer (in beta to prepare for the steam frame since stable is kinda stinky) and my steam deck (in stable because beta might break my mods) Thats an officially supported setup

  22. update on that laptop... archstrap+fix worked, but... now it's running freeBSD and serving as a CUPS proxy for a printer that only works when connected to over its internal wi-fi AP due to a phone-home feature that resets it every few seconds if networked over wire or wifi client. 🥺

I just released an update to my #iOS Intersector app that vastly improves the map data speeds and reliability. This is an app that simply identifies intersections when out and about, a common bit of orientation info we #Blind folks need when traveling. Intersector tells you about your nearest or upcoming intersections, tells you your compass direction, has a Scan mode where you can move your phone around to discover what intersections are immediately around you, and has a Live mode where it will speak your intersections as you walk or drive around. Great for figuring out where you are in a bus or a rideshare, or reorienting when coming out of a subway, etc. It has Siri shortcuts and an Apple Watch companion app. Check it out! apps.apple.com/us/app/intersec…

Well, I flopped back to Jellyfin. Plex was disappearing films without rhyme or reason. After having tried at least 6 apps for the Apple TV device, I settled on Swifty, which is focused on DirectPlay. I also like the way the Home section looks and is setup. Took me a minute to find my Collections, but no worries there. Its placement makes some sense in a minimalistic way that I can get behind. Hey, I'm only doing this shit so y'all don't have to... ;>)

I dislike this particular "dig" at modern webdev. Yes, I agree that sites could do to be more efficient, but the problem space for voyager vs web-dev is VASTLY different. Voyager was a SINGLE computer with an EXTREMELY precise mission plan, and given billions (equivalent) of dollars of investment to program for JUST it. Modern browsers are stupidly complex, all have vastly different APIs and situational needs, and every user interacts differently. A Site's "mission" also changes constantly.

Earlier today I posted on #Facebook that I would be away for at least a month as a trial. I uninstalled the app (Messenger too) from my phone and tablet. I've closed my #Instagram, #WhatsApp, and #Threads accounts months ago, and I look forward to a possible #Meta free life. Google and Amazon are both going to take more time, unfortunately. Probably a lot.

  32. I feel like Smart-EX, the official Shinkansen booking website, is the epitome of bad Japanese web design. None of the fields autocomplete, the placeholders are nonsensical (“4 digit number” for what it turns out to be a year field, the month and day fields are unlabelled dropdowns), making you click extraneous buttons to do things that should be automatic… it’s a mess.

  33. I use firefox's container tabs feature to allow me to log into websites with multiple accounts, which is important for my work. The feature color codes tabs, which is useful for telling them apart at a glance. The two most important were "orange" for my employer, and "yellow" for my client. However, because they made these colors muted and made the indicator lines thinner, those tab hints are now all slightly different shades of ochre. 🤦‍♀️ EDIT: browser.nova.enabled controls it, ty Alice

I said no microblogging, but I want to say that if you're learning a new programming language, or just want to brush up on one, then #exercism is really a great tool. Can't recommend it enough. Used to always roll my eyes at those sort of exercises, but it's really been helpful for me to grasp different concepts. Also want to say that #Zig is probably my favorite #programming language and I haven't even really written anything in terms of personal projects. Just read some books and exercises. It's simplicity, consistency, and transparency are something else. It's like Python if I actually knew wtf it was doing under the hood.
