How it works

  1. Pet peeve of mine: when tech people who should know better name a thing an "operating system" when it is, in fact, not an operating system. "This is our new operating system for [insert thing here]." -> turns out to actually be an electron app running on iOS or whatever.

  2. Been slowly rebuilding my offline digital music... found all my old mp3s on an old hdd. and damn i missed having a dedicated player! Musicolet is a great free app if anyone is looking, and musicbee for pc. Sea Wolf, Des Ark, Tubers... yaaaaas

I thought working for a closed source company would change my opinion, but it has only made me love open source more, and want to give back. I have learned so much from open source, and home labs in general, it is only fair to pass it on to the next wave of younger folks getting into the hobby/field.

  4. @passle.dev

I'm kind of mourning the good-times tech twitter, there were a lot of interesting web dev people active, and many of them just kind of have disappeared or moved on, and I miss that time and some of those people a lil bit

not to slightly doom but will we ever have people in charge of online spaces that aren't super sensitive crybabies who use their power to lord over their site's users. or is that just what silicon valley/the tech field does to you

"I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've been glad that I didn't delete a piece of code." Kerri Miller used to think an uncalled method did no damage and more tests were always better. About 30 years in, she's stopped keeping code around in case she needs it.

I've had a problem with my #IDNet FTTC line for the last month or so. When upload is saturated with #IPv6 traffic, IPv4 on the same PPPoE session stops working entirely, even pings to IDNet's gateway. Saturate with IPv4 instead and IPv6 is unaffected. It looks like separate per-protocol queues with IPv6 given priority somewhere beyond my router - same thing happens with two different modems. CAKE shaping on the #MikroTik works around it but isn't ideal. Has anyone else seen this or got ideas?

  10. @b0rk@social.jvns.ca

Thinking this morning about how much of teaching is just taking the time to listen. Hearing what someone’s actual computer problem is and then addressing it is so much harder than just telling them what I think is interesting or cool. And sometimes I don’t know the answer to their actual problem, and I might not even know how to find out, and that feels bad! But it’s okay to just say “I don’t know” :)

  11. I do want to say Discord is not innocent on this. I tried to report Double Counter for suspicious behavior several times since it was just collecting this info in sketchy ways and discord wouldnt let me post in their help forums about it. They know

  12. @kysill@hachyderm.io

Forcing users to change passwords every year doesn't improve security, it actively undermines it. Mandatory rotations lead to predictable patterns, weaker variations, and passwords written down. Major cybersecurity organizations recommend against it. So why are we still doing this outdated policy UBC? cybersecuritycanada.com/enforc…

The thing is, I think iPlayer already works really well. I can find stuff, I get recommendations of things I might like, it’s all good. It’d be helpful to have one button access from my remote - but otherwise I think it’s the cleanest most logical streaming service atm.

  14. Dave Winer (@davew) continues some big thinking around Markdown: scripting.com/2026/10/06/00555… I'm pretty sure this could be done with a Chrome extension, if it hasn't already, but that would be missing his point around big tech "ownership" of the web. I had been thinking of writing such a thing, but for somewhat different reasons. I'd love to put a declarative data pipeline definition in the front matter, and have the body as a Markdown template. 15. YouTube recommended me a video review for the handheld I bought because it blew up for some reason, and after watching it for 10 minutes I came to a dawning realization that it probably wasn't above board. Dude mentioned going to their reveal press event then straight up lied about benchmarks.

  16. @clew@ecoevo.social

Thanks to people who recommended Postgresql to me a while back and BIG thanks to everyone who wrote the #Postgres *documentation*. I'm used to having to find a tutorial or three, right? And there are some hosted by hosting companies and pretty tactful about it. But I am not far into my little project and just *reading the official documentation* is already the fastest way to Doing the Thing.

  17. Ok but the way in which I can update my blog/site now is so easy! I wonder if I can use a github app so I can upload stuff from Columbus from my ipad or something on the go? It is just creating a file on the repository, writing it on md and pushing the commit, and boom, blog posted, site updated.

  18. IMO, there is about to be a big tipping point in gaming monitors with Gsync Pulsar and RGB Stripe OLED. Everything that came before is inferior in a serious way. People that buy expensive gaming monitors are going to ditch their 360hz IPS gaming monitor and get one of these new fangled GSync Pulsar and/or OLED 360hz+ monitors. 240hz and lower monitors of yesteryear will be relegated to the bargain bin.

  19. Hello! First check-in here. After using my Facebook profile as my primary online social hub for 15 years, I have decided to migrate after Meta's rollout of the 'Meta One' program. I considered a few different decentralized platforms; Bluesky won out. Feels a bit like old-school Twitter.

From August: Recommended streaming services for cartoons (2026 edition). TLDR, even ignoring politics, I didn't really recommend HBO Max or Paramount+; most of their stuff can be found on the general recommendations list: Netflix, Disney+/Hulu, Prime Video, Tubi, and PBS Kids. diversetechgeek.com/recommende… #streaming #Skydance #WarnerBros #Paramount #physicalmedia

  21. It's interesting to be cheering good news for Bambu, who have been actively assertive that rules don't apply to them where open source licenses are concerned, unilaterally take away functionality from customers as the price of security updates, and aggressively court influencers whole being reported to actively muzzle them with anti-disparagement or similar clauses. (The report that they have done this for many influencers makes me suspicious of every popular influencer who claims that they themselves have not been so constrained. 🤨) The enemy of my enemy is not always actually my friend, but I can still be glad to see these patent grabs at least somewhat extinguished.

I’m using TaskWarrior for my project todo lists, and honestly, I’ve been loving it! I’ve been migrating nearly all of things I was subscribing to some app for over to open-source (and free) solutions. So sick of giving everyone else my money and personal data.

  27. Somehow I have certain podcasts I listen to on BBC Sounds, some on Spotify and some on Apple Podcasts. All of these podcasts - I think - are on all of these platforms. There is no logic to my ‘system’ and I’m wondering how this happened.

  28. @hamstar@wetdry.world

I know I'm preaching to the choir on mastodon, but I hate how modern media has one button that means "show appreciation to the creator" and "show me more content like this" and also "show this content to other people" I've become so restrictive to what I leave a "like" on because I don't want to fuck up my feeds but sometimes I want to be able to say "thanks for the post" or "other people should see this" without saying "please keep showing me this"

How does a boundary rendering update sound? Before: Mixed datasets meant a boundary could be disputed at zoom 8 but not at zoom 4. Now: Single-line boundaries, normalized claimed_by property, merged features with matching attributes. Smaller tiles, same visual output. Every boundary is consistently marked as disputed or non-disputed at every zoom level, and we've cleaned up inconsistencies, like the Korean border. @ianthetechie explains it. #BuildWithStadiaMaps stadiamaps.com/blog/updated-bo…

I helped my mum with applying for a bonus for her new electric car. You could only do so online and it was … not easy. The most aggravating “feature” was getting logged out (*without* saving what we had already typed in) because we took some time to figure out a correct answer. After that, I regularly checked and unchecked one of the checkboxes further down and that prevented the auto-logout. 😬

There is the suggestion to have cut-and-paste where cut marks the selection and paste actually moves it: ishmael.textualize.io/blog/gho… That makes a lot of sense. But I wonder why it is not already this way. Cut/paste was invented at a time where reflows of text were very expensive (and the ghost-cut would remove one reflow). I wonder if there is a hidden footgun. I could not find out if the suggestion was made back then, but I found some other cut/paste histories ... #UX

Ran into that recently: github.com/r-lib/devtools/issu… And this morning I had to help someone that install package on some OneDrive, using wininet and Using Rstudio without using 50% of the panels (I think I make them discovered they could make them smaller so they could have more screen space). I am not sure we progressed neither sure we did the right think along plenty of way... #Rstats

Google Messages is discontinuing the individual chat setting allowing users to revert from RCS to SMS/MMS protocols. This change, observed in recent beta updates, removes the flexibility to manage messaging on a per-contact basis. Previously, users could switch to SMS for specific conversations to avoid RCS issues like spam or connectivity problems. Read more: makeuseof.com/google-messages-…
