No I don’t want to save to the onedrive cloud service, I want to save to my hard drive. The one that’s here. On my laptop.
I just heard that Gravity Linux and Asahi Linux support Macs explicitly and I was thinking “Great! I have a path to getting my old MBP working with linux!” Installing Ubuntu on it didn’t go great. Asahi targets M1 and M2 models and Gravity targets M4 models, though. Mine is a pre-m1 intel model.
People say that free/open source software is community first, creating software second. But often it's "someone is wrong on the internet" first, community second and maaaaybe somewhere down the line there is software. #floss #opensource
I realized today that the reason my MacBook's webcam lens is always smeared is because the industrial design encourages the user to put their finger on it every time they open the lid. Another piece of amazing design from Apple's genius designers

I just stumbled across Xcode’s new Markdown editor. It’s fantastic, *but* because I use a fixed-width font for documentation comments, my Markdown body text becomes fixed width as well. This is like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I've been CLI/TUI biased & mostly for decades. But granted exceptions for certain GUIs where they felt like the lesser evil considering making a fresh attempt at going 100% CLI/TUI-only. both in workflows and social apps
after i stream my computer like... blows up lately 💀 i have to restart my PC and it takes forever for it to reboot and it's super frustrating. gonna try and get a new motherboard for more ram but ough...
The discord disinformation is so annoying because people are making a reasonable assumption "Oh it wasn't Discord, but it was one of Discord's partners, so it might as well still be Discord' but lol no it isn't even that
Walking away from the BigTech socials is not easy for many because of locked-in audiences. Despite the obvious doomscrolling, addiction by design, extreme (right) biasing and polarisation, there are still many people in those social media. But what if communities would shape their own connected community spaces, and move there together? @Bonfire is showcasing some really impressive examples. Or @newsmast. See our story: Our socials, not our trap: democratictech.fund/stories/ne… #OurSocials #Fediverse #ConnectedCommunitySpaces
i'm going to commit to this, yet... i dont want to... fuck, still flip flopping
Ok, it's been 15-something years I haven't touched SolidWorks but just to make an assembly, I could be able to use FreeCAD just by instinct, right? *20 minutes later* Well, I don't know how to "properly" move objects other than "transforming" them, I can't find a grid to align stuff and it crashed when duplicating pieces. Ok.
Conclusions from spending a little time on Threads: 1. Small accounts can get a lot more engagement than here. 2. Manipulative engagement bait, especially deliberate rage bait, is rampant and rewarded. It’s the whole model. 3. Lots more dumb as shit people over there.
I have to smile as a lot of YouTube videos saying because of the underhand business tactics of Microsoft more people are moving to Linux and discovering that there is a viarable alternative to Windows which is free. I did this over 20+ years ago and never looked back! #linux #windows
GStreamer Conference 2026 Only two days to go until the biggest GStreamer event of the year! 10-11 October in Prague, followed by a hackfest. It's not too late to join us - go and register now! See you all in Prague #gstreamer #multimedia #streaming #gstconf2026
It is crazy how one of the strongest selling points of this site is the self moderation tools but bc 100% of the userbase is ex Twitter users it still developed a culture of "blocking and detaching quotes are admissions of defeat, engage with me and my followers trying to dogpile you"
touchscreens need, like, a kill switch. like if your laptop has a touchscreen there should be a key combination for "CUT OFF TOUCHSCREEN INPUT NOW". I have so many times been fucked by a touchscreen starts failing / gets a small amount of water spilled on it / etc and suddenly there are hundreds of phantom inputs being splattered around the screen and maybe something really bad is happening because of the fast random mouse inputs
I'm old enough to see VR get signal boosted in the 90s and the 2010s and IMHO it was always being promoted by out of touch dumb asses who are unserious on making people want things. They refused to make VR desirably priced because they stupidly believed consumers would meet them at their bullshit.
Hey theATL.social! 👋 Thank you to all the financial contributors to theATL.social - y'all make the magic happen. Next month will be the 4 year anniversary of this service 😮. Seems like some celebration is in order... After both moving cloud providers, and then a move (within Atlanta) over the years, thanks to your support, we've had pretty damn good reliability, too. Software news: 1. Our mastodon fork is now up-to-date with v4.7.3 🚀 2. PeachPie (Pyfed) is being updated to 1.8.0, and should be shipped later today or tomorrow. 3. I'm working on another set of updates to write.theatl.social and fixing a couple of bugs/issues with the member site. And, if you are in #Atlanta this weekend, Happy Pride :sp_pride:, and send happy thoughts to keep Hurricane Isaias away. #theATLSocial
while discord should still be slammed, this isnt Discord's fault this time, its the third party app mentioned here's fault.
It's been a while since I've given an update on what I've been doing. The Vaults service covers all minimum features I will need to use the API internally while also being useful enough as an auditable and partially automated password manager. #buildinpublic
I will release to F Droid store when I get to it. Google Play Store is harder because they want my name and address even for free material. And Apple requires some special hacks (which have been completed, but still I have to bother to hack). The point is, if you have a GitHub, you can point your tool to GitHub.com/isomorphisms/androi…, and very quickly talk it through an interaction to show somebody who hasn't spent all the time, what it is you've been on about…
Did accessibility audit on a webapp at work containing about 40 screens - 39 of them completely failed. This is a classic sign of someone blindly copying and pasting bad code. I feel like I wasted my time...
I really like the new Nova design in Firefox. Will give it a try and might move Back to Firefox from Vivaldi. A big plus of Firefox for me is that it can auto expand the side bar tabs on hover and auto switches dark/light theme in Linux which never worked in Vivaldi for me. And of course havin real uBlock and an independent rendering engine are factors as well. #firefox #firefoxNova #vivaldibrowser #vivaldi
Those weirdos at the office of the tax collector implemented a bunch of obnoxious anti-scraping tech to their property tax bill site, so, for the first time ever, I had to automate this with the chrome testing API. What a drag.
If you publish any #OpenSource and you want people to use it, may I please implore you to test your README? Can you actually follow the steps you've written down? Does it work if the user doesn't have the same development packages installed as you? shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/10/how-t…
Another bullshit tech blog headline. Satellites will never compete with cellular because they don't work inside--at all, or under cover of trees, or in shadows of tall buildings. If your phone cannot see a broad view of the sky, you're not getting a signal. That's no competition at all.
Maybe the computer god can fix it
ESP32-C3 question -- is there actual documentation of the interface to the WiFi/BT features anywhere (I'm not finding it in the 900 page TRM), or does one have to dig through the IDF/SDK library goop in order to figure out what's going on there? #ESP32 #ESP32C3 #Questions

Smart home devices sound convenient, but I worry that if a smart home ecosystem in my home was hacked that a thief could easily take everything, lock the door behind them, and I'd have no idea what happened. #tech #Apple
this is presented as an honorable list, but you could also see it as a nice "why open source failed" explainer sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
Stolen Device Protection on iPhone is neat because if you're transitioning you can get locked out of options on your own phone even if you have the passcode because your facial appearance and structure are changing. Looking forward to a backup and restore cycle to fix that.
nice that last year Discord warned everyone about the halloween sound change and let you choose whether to enable it and this year they were just like "nah"
The latest #LLVM release's zstd archive was using such a large context window I had to pass `-I "zstd --long=30"` to 'tar' to decompress it. Don't remember that happening before. I wouldn't think the #zstd default changed, so this seems like a weird change to apply to the backend between .0 and .3 (setting windowLog=30)
If I am old and I miss adobe/macro media fireworks for interaction design prototyping, what should I be using today?
@xpil yeah, Ubuntu is great. I recently upgraded to 26.04.1 and it's been flawless. For screenshots, I just use the Gnome Screenshot tool by pressing `print screen` on my keyboard. Seems to do what I need, but my needs when it comes to screenshots are pretty basic.
Here's a free idea for Github: don't allow bots to do pull requests and pushes. If people want to vibe code, go nuts. But a real user has to submit the PR. These constant outages are not sustainable
I know no one likes the holiday notification sounds on Discord because rather than charge for those, they force them on everyone without warning
Don't know if anyone has posted this, but in the latest beta of iOS27.2, the audio destination thing in the VoiceOver rotor actually works somewhat. There's still a kink to work out with sound effects switching, but aside from that it's working flawlessly. It's epic!
A friendly reminder that the best ever media player MPC-HC has continued being updated and developed by one of the original programmers/engineers on Github github.com/clsid2/mpc-h...
The basic problem with social media is that the kind of people you'd want posting on it are generally the same kind of people who make a point of avoiding social media like the plague. You can see their point.
It would appear the keyword for Googlebook reviews is regression. It is everywhere and not in good ways. I suppose it is becoming clear why Google didn't make review units available ahead of the launch. Somewhat torn on whether or not buy a Googlebook at this point and hope they can fix the launch issues or just go back to Windows.
Reading up on how to manually create an RSS feed which will get updated every time I add pages to the Polar Bear Comix site. Looks pretty straightforward. Which is what people always say right before they find themselves neck deep in xml.
So LG is apparently partnering (or something) with Apple for HomeKit devices. After their TVs were fingered for snooping it would be hard to trust them. Note: LG denies the snooping but the evidence is strong enough to concern me and since there are lots of other chioces of vendors I see no reason to try.
I appreciate how Discord makes the gift button frequently glow or have some special effect so I know which of the grey buttons in the message box to not press at first glance

unfortunately the surveillance makes me sound cool as fuck
What you might have missed is that Ruby also provides Dir.mktmpdir, which creates a temporary directory (also in /tmp). This is especially useful when writing integration tests where you need to generate multiple temporary files for downstream steps. Dir.mktmpdir returns the path to the temporary folder, allowing you to create files inside it using standard methods like File.write.
