TIL Some of English's silent letters were added on purpose! 'Debt' was once spelled 'dette' and 'doubt' was 'doute'. In the 1400s and 1500s, writers added a silent 'b' to make these words look more like their Latin ancestors.

This week marks 114 years since the Qing dynasty fell. In 1912, military mutinies and years of reform agitation finally toppled China's last emperors, ending nearly three centuries of Qing rule and nearly three millennia of imperial governance. • Southeastern will introduce its Autumn Timetable from 11 October to 12 December 2026, with changes aimed at improving reliability during seasonal conditions. Many customers will see little change, but some services will be retimed or have revised stopping patterns. Some early trains will leave one to five minutes earlier. On Victoria–Orpington services, some trains will not stop at West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill, Penge East or Kent House. Some Dartford–Cannon Street trains will skip St Johns, while Dover Priory–Victoria services will be retimed by up to eight minutes. Metro services will also see minor changes. Southeastern says the adjustments provide greater flexibility during leaf fall and wet weather, which can affect braking and acceleration. Customers are advised to check their journey before travelling. newsroom.southeasternrailway.c…
