Oh no, Glen Powell's films are flopping, how can studios possibly find another Glen Powell... other than by walking into literally any random acting class and going 'yeah, he'll do'?

I always find it interesting how Universal will trot out something with the Universal Monsters on it every 10-15 years but absolutely REFUSE to make any movies or anything with them. They've been doing this for NEARLY A CENTURY.
Watched John Carpenter's "The Thing" last night. Tonight: 1987 - Prince of Darkness 1994 - In the Mouth of Madness Donald Pleasance! Alice Cooper! John Carpenter! Sam Neill! #October #Froptober
A wonderful encapsulation of a wonderful movie and this idiosyncratic man’s whole deal!
A Boss and A Babe (2023) An uncomfortable premise for a comedy: A boss is immediately smitten by his intern. But it works! Cher (Kasidet Plookphol) grabs life with both hands. Gun (Force Jiratchapong Srisang), the quiet boss, hesitates over a failing game launch. A few darker storylines are dropped into this otherwise breezy drama. Altogether, the romance was enjoyable even with its messier moments. How did this series hit you? #KasidetPlookphol #ForceJiratchapong #ThaiBL #ThaiDrama #Viki
My series on the HALLOWEEN films continues with HALLOWEEN II. In this essay, I take a look at the community rot of Haddonfield, the growing place of TV news in the series, and what is lost without John Carpenter. www.patreon.com/willowcately...
Congrats to our CEO & Studio Head @AdamCreighton!
Finished my rewatch of Black Sails and that's still some of the best TV you could make time for. They leveraged a Treasure Island prequel into a beautiful tragedy about how empires maintain power, internally and externally, and what it takes to oppose them.
On the flight to Australia I watched the live-action version of the anime CELLS AT WORK in which a plucky red blood cell teams up with a sexy white blood cell to protect a teenage girl's organs. Utterly sublime. youtube.com/watch?v=VKzbpeFLXTk

"sets a community’s kids upon America’s nuclear family": Max Kalmanowicz’s low-budget chiller THE CHILDREN (1980) screens 8.15am today (i.e. right now) at SITGES Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya. projectedfigures.com/2018/01/1…
This has been glaring for years but the steep acceleration of the lack of diversity is stark. For Latinos he Latinx community I couldn't find a Latinx focused show on a major network since Hulu cancelled the criminally underrated This Fool. I don't see myself in tv shows anymore.
Other Mommy is way better than I expected it to be. A leaner, meaner version of Poltergeist. Great performances all around with Jessica Chastain pulling double duty as Mommy and the truly terrifying Other Mommy.
The 18-34 demo wants what that demo has consistently wanted - variety with recognizable echoes of their own experiences. That's why the biggest movies of the year with said demo are huge name-driven blockbusters that cost a quarter billion dollars. They want Scary Girlfriend *and* Space Rock Buddy.
Ok, hats off to the #TedLasso team, that was a beautifully-constructed, self-contained season 4 with a finale that defied several of my presumptions. Lovely!
i'm so-so on Fjord, but i also find the political handwringing from some critics a bit baffling. Candice is 100% right here about the way the movie demands a consideration of perception.
They should warn people before watching Discovery that the rule is: time stops in-universe when someone is having a feeling. Warp core about to breach? Oxygen running out? Planet about to explode? Two minutes of Emotion are about to ensue while the alarms blare on, characters bleed, shields miraculously stay up, and you gnaw your arm off. This is a new trope for Trek for us and: no, i dont like it.
The thing about Digger is that it feels like there's so many different layers on display, but in reality it's just the one and when you realize which layer that is it instantly all clicks into place. You could not have timed it better as WB's last film before the merger.

Heard one of the '90s guys who worked with Roger Corman say he asked him to write a frame story for an existing film, so he wrote an elaborate one that could be crosscut throughout of someone on trial, presented it to him, and Corman went "nobody wants to see a movie that begins with a guy in court"

Make a point to see TAKE ME HOME! It's a movie trying to do caretaker cinema in a way that's not reductive. I had a great chat with director Liz Sargent, actor Ali Ahn, and acting coach Terra Mackintosh on making Anna Sargent the disabled star we need right now. thefilmmaven.com/take-me-home...
I acquired Spider-Man Brand New Day. The Hulk vs. Spider-Man and Scorpion vs Spider-Man fight 1 & 2 were the best parts. The story is really patched together. Sony/Marvel mad billions on it so I assume they are going to paste together movies going forward. The story was barely coherent because of this, which is too bad.
one thing i appreciate about mechsplo is the ways that it is downstream of the USian war movie about how killing children made US soldier sad. mechsplo very earnestly explores the seductiveness of fascism, of a clarity of purpose and a perfectly aestheticised society.
You’ve been warned, parents.
the one scene from digger that's stuck with me is when jesse plemons' character tells the other people in the room "yes, the shit that happened was *incredibly* dumb and unbelievable, but it still *happened*". I think Iñárritu touched on the unending sense of disbelief with the past ten years.
Terrific. Really a great treatment. Excellent casting, great writing.
This is a great thread, up and down; I keep thinking about being a little kid and watching Star Trek:TNG and really trying to think through the consequences of the holodeck. How would "make me a private eye based on a 1930s noir setting" really work? Who or what is making it "work"?
It all makes sense now, why #Netflix suddenly had the entire #DoctorX series available last month. The new, #KDrama series of the same franchise is being released weekly while actively being produced and broadcast in South Korea.
I didn't think it was likely a third one would happen. I quite like how it ended tbh. My guess for the third film - the woman who escaped the Jimmy's makes it to the island. When Spike returns he is exiled and takes over the Bone Temple. 28 Years Later a group of kids hide, watching him work
This is from an email that I got from Milwaukee Film. I still have no idea what Digger is actually about.
I think ultimately GO3 failed to answer the free will question but so many philosophical shows have tried and failed and GO3 is just one of them. They tried to apply NG’s brand of nihilistic thinking to it when the show had before relied on Terrys more positive out look

Part of what makes Before Sunrise such a strong romance is there's no real 3rd act conflict trope to split up the couple. The whole movie is us watching 2 people fall in love from start to finish, or as Celine would say, finding God/magic "in this little space in between" them.
ABC is making an American version of the BBC show Ludwig, about a crossword puzzle constructor turned detective, and setting it in Cambridge. I’m sure no more than the opening credits will actually be filmed here, but it does seem like a plausible show where he could consult a rare book at some point, which I would enjoy hate-watching. avclub.com/ludwig-american-ver…
Tim and Eric's Tom Goes To The Mayor, no other show compares A mayor that rebuilds the amusement park he burnt down as a child at great public expense only to burn it down again used to be considered satirical
Great review of HBO's Lanterns: "This is the type of science fiction that considers the inner space of the human mind as vast and fascinating as outer space.." Plus watch it for the banter between the two leads and wonderful performance by Kyle Chandler. #scifi nerds-feather.com/2026/10/tv-r…
Set in 2027, which is a little on the nose.
Just finished the first episode of Seven Havens. So my fan theory from a year ago that Reddit said was stupid turned out to be true.
I saw this in the theater and I thought it was fantastic. The skits were fun, and the movie was very riffable. I ordered the blu ray of these. I can't wait to see the rest!
Watching the Digger trailer, for the first time I think, and I have no idea what this movie is about and everyone in this movie is super old. how did anyone think this was a good trailer?
This is a very cool ghosty story. Committed performances all round & laced with melancholy. I first enjoyed it on VHS many moons past... Recommended.
Content warningspoilers for hulu's furious
okay i'm sorry the show is very serious and an incredibly good look at what trauma and sexual violence do to people but also catherine looking at alice and saying "what do you want me to do? you want me to kill him?" and then shrugging and shooting alice's pice of shit ex was uhhh insanely sexy
Since Cosmic Era Gundam still seems to want to be as big as Universal Century, I have to wonder when that part of the franchise will move beyond Kira. From what I can tell about Freedom Zero, it's going to focus more on Shinn, but what about more side stories or far off futures? UC does both.
Mission Impossible II is currently on the BBC iPlayer. The film includes many shootings and explosions. Many characters are killed. The BBC headline message? "Contains some violence." bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002…
I’m also at NYCC for Vulture, doing interviews, writing stuff up. I asked Crystal Lake creator Brad Caleb Kane if there’s any reason beyond franchise fidelity for setting it in the 70s, and he had a lot to say about that! www.vulture.com/article/crys...
Off to the theatre tonight to see "Twelve Angry Men." I love the film and have always thought it would be great on stage...so let's find out!
Didn't love the new Carrie. King was always great at portraying abusers; The struggle of the abused to rise up from oppression, and the strength of that fight creating a supernatural and satisfying vengeance. The series isn't any of that. But great acting, great cinematography, and great soundtrack.
