"The apotheosis of insanity.” For the 20th anniversary of 30 Rock, I went deep on my favorite thing about it: all the fake shows, movies, and songs. With help from Tina Fey. www.theringer.com/2026/10/08/t...

Patlabor 2 is an amazing political thriller and one of my favorites of all time but the line that sticks with me the most is "Reality is often absent at the highest level of decision making."
Watching Boyhood for the first time in years. My first big year paying attention to film was 2014, so a lot of my first awards season fight between Boyhood and Birdman. I was thoroughly part of camp Birdman, and was throwing around the taunting “IT TOOK 12 YEARS TO MAKE!”
Saw the Musk documentary at the Mill Valley Film Festival - that’s a very long movie, much to the surprise of some folks at intermission who revealed that they did not know this information in advance - very fun @niedermeyer.online appearance digging into Elon’s battery swapping fraud
26 episodes into Gundam Seed Destiny so here's a quick "mid-season" review i guess: This show is trying *so* hard to be good and frequently almost succeeds. There's brief bits of drama or dialogue that hit as good as Seed. The politics and plot are more complex and sometimes actually quite cool.
#Folktober movie 6: The Witch (2015). A banished Puritan family is tormented by something in the woods, and the oldest daughter bears the brunt of it. It’s beautifully shot and well acted, and solid folk horror, but it’s more a study of a collapsing family than anything really scary. It’s fine.
I like Reacher season 4 so far (3 episodes in). Giving him a bumbling police officer sidekick makes it feel a bit like season 1 again. Like MacGyver with muscles and not like a superhuman ogre on a killing spree. #Reacher
Doing publicity fgor the NYT 100 Best TV Shows list, the question I get over and over is "So are we in a golden age?" Which is a phrase I kinda hate but it got me thinking. I'd rather be watching TV today than, like 1986. But IMHO the recent creative peak was like 10 years ago, give or take
"One of the film's fundamental problems is that Facebook is still going strong, and Zuckerberg is still worth more than $200 billion, so the viewer knows all along that there isn't an All The President's Men-style giant-killing finale in store." bbc.com/culture/article/202610… #movies #SocialMedia #Facebook
Which makes it more pointless to argue against a movie because it bombed. Or to argue for a movie to feel like you’re a rebel going against the grain. As someone who barely watches many studio movies, most of what I watch falls in the spectrum from underperforming to breaking even.
Too many talking heads for my taste, but fascinating. The animation style used to reconstruct past events is reminiscent of the approach at Perth Museum for the Stone of Destiny exhibition. Agog at how the tapestry was transported. As a genealogist I was also working out how I’m related to some of these folks. Direct descent from William the Conqueror and also Harold Godwinson (via his daughter Gytha), and descent from a brother of Edward the Confessor (via St Margaret). bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00303gc
Having watched Marathon Man on Sunday and Texas Chain Saw Massacre on Monday, I can confirm uncomplicated, unrepentant, pure evil baddies rule. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

Watching #WeAreAllTryingHere and enjoying the way each character is struggling in different ways. But you know what’s missing? Kids. None of these characters has small children, and that’s a whole other layer of complexity when trying to reach professinal success.

The new Carrie clips I've seen seem promising, but I promised not to take any Carrie adaptation seriously until they cast an actress with some weight. It'll always be amusing to me that in a story about a teenage girl driven to tragedy by bullying, they won't show a major part of her bullying.
All these gritty sitcom reboots and not a single studio brave enough to take on Mr Ed. This man has a *talking horse*. In a stable like an animal! Consider the ethics! The powerful forces that don’t want a horse to talk! But plot twist: Mr Ed is ready to take matters into his own hooves.
I just passed my 10th anniversary of becoming a “professional” critic: my first ever proper review, of Kirsten Johnson’s CAMERAPERSON, went online on September 26, 2016 @ Seattle Screen Scene; can’t thank @theendofcinema.bsky.social enough for taking a chance. seattlescreenscene.com/2016/09/26/c...
How do you follow a modern classic? Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Reckoning" isn't "The Social Network," but it's a strong journalism thriller with Mikey Madison delightful as a Facebook whistleblower and Jeremy Strong brilliant as Mark Zuckerberg. 1/3 moviecricket.net/blog/2026/10...
🎞️ 🍿 🎃 October #MovieNight The Addams Family (1991) This one is specifically an Evelia request, as she informed me this evening that she really doesn't consider our Halloween movie marathon to have begun until we see it. Who knew? Fortunately I like it as well, although I consider Addams Family Values to be the rare sequel that is the better of the two. Casting was perfect and while there have been other fine actors in these roles, Julia, Huston, Ricci, Loyd, etc... will always be my favs.
I LOVE this thread about John Seitz, with mention of Gregg Toland + other cinematographers. Tragedy THEIR work is NOT being taught at many film schools. I love DEEP FOCUS and dramatically lit shots. Chiaroscuro or dramatic contrast between dark and light ❤️ Big fan of Caravaggio + Rembrandt.
Season 2 of Dark Matter: what a mess. Can’t tell who is who, no idea what’s going on. The one positive note: At least they’re trying to explain the many weird coincidences by working them into the story. But still: Lost vibes danger zone…
My husband and I watched the original "Tremors" last night. Fastest unanimous movie streaming decision ever (it's on Peacock). I had never actually seen it before, despite knowing about it, and he hadn't seen it decades. We were thoroughly entertained! The charm and effects held up so well. I […]

Sorkin doesn’t just steal this from Roth, he has used it before in The West Wing (he is a frequent self-plagiarist as all WW fans know) Donna: You know what word should be Yiddish but isn’t? Spatula. Also, farfetched. www.theguardian.com/film/2026/oc...
Me, watching "Star Trek: Insurrection" in 1998: "Why would the Baku willingly give up technology?" Me, watching current events in 2026: "I get it now."
I'm watching the 1935 film Werewolf of London, generally accepted as the first feature length werewolf movie, and I don't think this establishing shot that opens the movie is actually in Tibet as they claim.
Sentimental Value Wow, this was very good. In the genra of family drama / trauma. Their mother dies and their father comes back into their life's after leaving decades earlier. themoviedb.org/movie/1124566-a… #movies
I'm finally up to date with Silo S3. After a slow start those last few episodes went so quickly & were very tense. At first I wasn't keen on the flashbacks but they got really interesting & became essential. Hopefully S4 will fill in some of the details of the first days of the Silo.

I saw Nigel Kneale’s adaptation of The Woman in Black on transmission, aged 11, and it was one of my most formative television experiences. It was an utter dream to be invited to a cast reunion podcast to discuss this greatest of ghost stories.
Widows Bay could have been an email. I just could not connect with its humor nor horror. I also have a hard time considering it a comedy. Its location had so much potential, and yet it feels just like any other place in the American Northeast where there is a forest
Loved talking about Godzilla for the new Low Culture Pod, and also watching the superb recent Godzilla Minus One - the best Second World War film I’ve seen in years. The special effects put Hollywood to shame - in a different league to the massively disappointing Masters Of The Air, for example.
Carrie S01E01 released in 2026 Siena Agudong, a woman of color, is the first to point out to the biggest bully which person is Carrie. This reinforces negative stereotypes. Naika Toussaint, a Black Woman, is depicted positively. But irl at the intersection of gender and ethnicity/race Black Women are the most marginalized. Omitting racism might help convince many that racism doesn't actually exist. imdb.com/title/tt11540908 #tv #horror #blackactors
Wow. That first episode of CARRIE. Masterful stuff from Mike Flanagan and team. The way the story is being updated for 2026, while maintaining so much of its core essence, is especially brilliant. Summer H. Howell is fantastic in the title role. Flanagan taking on Stephen King never misses.

Cathy/Kate Ames is one of my favorite literary figure. She is such a complex, damaged and wicked soul that you can’t help loving. Florence Pugh is killing it as her.
Just binged Ironheart. Spoilers ahead. I don't know what disturbs me more - that I immediately knew Sacha Baron Cohen is Mephisto after the first scene with him, or that Riri strikes a Faust pact. Doesn't anyone ever read Goethe's Faust anymore?!? #Ironheart #mcu #Goethe #Faust
"I Go Looney" from Batman: The Killing Joke Movie was garb, even so, Hamill really sold this number (and the entire movie tbh, along with Conroy of course). Great character designs, and then the animation done overseas, I believe, by The Answer Studio Co., Ltd. in Japan, not too shabby
🎬 New York, New York (1977) — ★★★ This movie would be a masterpiece if Jimmy Doyle experienced some freak accident in the war where the only way to save his life, was that his lips were permanently fixed to his saxophone. That way, we never have to hear Jimmy be the most despicable and annoying character I’ve seen in a while. 🔗 letterboxd.com/macdoofos/film/…
As I’ve said a lot over the past year or two, I’m much less interested in what a movie has to “say” than in what a movie has to do, or in how good it is compared to what it spurs in me and the experience watching it. DIGGER has a lot to do, it spurred a lot, and I greatly enjoyed watching it.
Spotting the liars on Celebrity Traitors looks easier from a sofa where we already know who they are. Research puts human lie detection barely above chance, while confidence, nervousness and a convincing story can all send suspicion in the wrong direction. theconversation.com/celebrity-…
Honestly, I used to chicken out at Goosebumps as a kid. Now, with watching horror media from decades earlier into present day, it's an on and off relationship. My favorite horror films include the Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1978 cuz I like sci-fi cosmic horror.

I really love how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds embraced an early 1960s theme, like jazz and decoration in 10 Forward, so that TOS fits a little better. Also, the design is choice.
The Sibling Realignment, Tam, and the Young Sheldon Problem I like Young Sheldon, I think it’s important to establish this before we really get going. Mainly because I have a strong suspicion that this post may turn out fairly insulting sounding towards the show so I think it’s important to make it clear to you that I genuinely enjoyed Young Sheldon. I thought it was both very well written and very well acted. weewritinglassie.home.blog/202…
Despite being the most forward facing part of the franchise, the live action movies contribute very little to the overall Transformers multiverse. Eclipsed by their own tie-in comics and games, even The majority of Bayverse lore doesn't come from the movies themselves
Recently rewatched Blade Runner (final cut)... Since Roy runs out of time at the end, did Ford's character have to do any of this? He retired one replicant that was just dancing with her snake. One guy was only a threat as far as we could tell because he was worried about blade runners retiring him. Pris and Roy kill Tyrell, so they are indeed dangerous, but... they weren't stopped from killing Tyrell. Harrison's character should have left the job alone. The replicants would have just died.
