I really only envy the rich one thing: the peace of mind that comes from knowing that if something happens you have the money to throw at a problem. Money does not solve all problems -- but it sure as hell makes dealing with problems that can't be avoided much easier. Someone's sick? You don't have to worry about paying medical bills, affording medications, etc. Somebody got drunk and plowed into your car last night? Sucks, but if you have enough money, it's just a minor hassle and not a catastrophe. Call a tow truck, your insurance, and rent a car while everything gets sorted out. Your kid needs braces? No problem. Money.

Kids going to college? Tuition and rent are not a problem. Visiting at will? No problem. Worrying about your kid while they're away? Sorry - you're on your own with that one... but you know you have the money to deal with most problems. Someone died? All the money in the world won't bring them back -- but not having to worry about, say, funeral expenses and all the financial impacts makes it easier to just deal with the grief.

The nation’s largest food distributor, Sysco, is buying Restaurant Depot—a deal that could drive up costs for restaurant owners and, ultimately, consumers. I’m calling on the FTC and DOJ to put a pause on this merger and protect independent restaurant owners and the communities they serve.

  12. Amazon screwed up my delivery yesterday. It said it was on the truck since like 8 am, and at 10 pm it changed to a reassuring, “Your package is still scheduled to arrive today.” (Almost exact words) Then at midnight it switched to essentially, “maybe next week”. Seems like they’d have more info about this. Also seems like they intentionally keep customer service in the dark in an effort to lower expectations and blow off complaints

I’m always arguing with myself about whether to participate more in capitalism (i.e. exploit more, make more money) or stay at a distance (i.e. exploit less, make less money). I’ve been lucky enough to be able to pretty much stay away from any direct exploitation and still have enough money to enjoy myself and probably retire ok, but sometimes I feel that I’ve left so much money on the table over the decades by not doing common things that are exploitative, like buying extra houses to rent them out, or by doing moonshot bets in clearly enshittifying business ventures that are bad for society. I guess I should count myself lucky that I’ve enjoyed the benefits of capitalism and still avoiding its worst behaviors, but every now and then I wonder. I really hate that capitalism works this way, that exploitation is the best path to securing a comfortable future. #capitalism
