I believe that at some point in the next ten years, a "brain computer interface" will exist that detects some kind of neuron activity, runs it through a machine learning model, and translates it into LLM agent actions. It won't be anything as clean as "you think a sentence and it types it". It will be something one level lower than "prompting an AI". You do some vague mental thing and it translates into a result on the computer. I believe this product will not work, but be sold anyway. (1/2)

Why exactly isn’t Amazon a worker, consumer and supplier-owned cooperative? It isn't obvious that a billionaire creating ecosystem is needed, that acts like a gigantosaurus hoovering everything up

All these gritty sitcom reboots and not a single studio brave enough to take on Mr Ed. This man has a *talking horse*. In a stable like an animal! Consider the ethics! The powerful forces that don’t want a horse to talk! But plot twist: Mr Ed is ready to take matters into his own hooves.

Artms was great :youngeunthumb: They went all in on sexy concepts for this concert. The setlist was full of slow sexy songs. Jungeunie aegyo princess of course couldn't help herself and was constantly doing cute things though :wonkekw: I was hoping she would have hair extensions in since she cut off her beautiful hair but no.. Yerim had to perform eclipse in her place since Jungeun can't do the hair flips :chuukek2:

As a parent of a Kid Who Reads and a Kid Who Is Starting to Read, I 100% believe that publishing could put even a little more effort into MG and be rewarded for it. Kids *are* reading. I see it among 9yo's schoolmates, I see it among 5yo's. They love the school library. They love being read to.

  7. The only long-term market for Google Playground's tech is spammers/scammers. Tech enthusiasts will try it for a few weeks before realizing they have no good ideas for games, but this is a gift to spammers who don't even have to bash together an asset flip anymore to make a convincing game build. "an early experiment designed to make game creation more approachable and ignite everyday creativity." There may have been an argument in the early days of computing when you'd have to purchase a compiler, it was an investment to throw coins at Borland and then have to learn coding. Not anymore. What sucks is Google knows its market shifted, just like how nvidia knew its market switched to cryptominers and now data centres. Of course we creatives are going to reject it. Google knows it's lying. We aren't the market, aside from a few dumb saps. The real money is in massive spam operations. #gamedev #google #googleplayground

  11. I don't think liking and enjoying art means you agree with the artist's personal viewpoints and takes. There's lots of people who like Rurouni Kenshin who aren't patrolling playgrounds for kids. I also believe that it's okay and valid to disassociate yourself with people who like things you don't.

  12. Our current National government proposing random drug testing for people on jobseekers benefits. Given the importance of their jobs, I think maybe it should be mandatory for MPs. That and breath testing for alcohol. Similarly, I think their wage in parliament should match that of job seeking benefit, and the meals they get when at parliament be the same as school dinners. It might concentrate their minds a bit on what the impacts of their decisions actually are

The copyright problems with training LLMs feels a bit like the sampling craze in the 1990s. Queen and David Bowie vs. Vanilla Ice, for example. New tech → novel uses → no laws for fair use in that context → new laws are drafted. At a human level, knowledge should be free. The way that LLMs represent knowledge isn't specific to the work. Yet, even given this, there is an ethical prickle when using published content. I'm sure we'll figure it out, but it's not the controversy what we make it out to be, it's just a step in the evolution of humankind.

  14. Hot Take: If you're a science communicator, you shouldn't be sharing articles that are behind a paywall. Screenshot the article, use an archiving tool, or choose another article that isn't behind a paywall. Our audience shouldn't have to pay to understand what we're talking about.

  15. I finished Season 1 of "The Ark", and I must admit it does get better. The last few episodes of Season 1 are great, and make up for the absolute nonsense that is the first half of the season. I think I came in to the series expecting something akin to "The Expanse", because the writers had obviously thought about long-term space travel (cryo tubes, ark ships in general) and so I assumed they'd be all-in on getting the science right. The second half of the season, and the first few episodes of season 2 that I've watched, are more like Voyager than The Expanse - a plucky crew of misfits having to work together. Voyager wasn't my favourite Star Trek initially, but over the years it has grown on me - much like The Ark has. #TheArk

Control is one of my favorite games of all time. I loved Alan Wake 2 and Quantum Break. I wanted to like Control Resonant so badly. But I find the fighting tedious, the level design confusing/frustrating, and the puzzles annoying - it's all such a slog 😢 The story is the only thing keeping me playing. Hope it gets better.

I do like the MPEG LA completely ruining what they had going (well, they're now like fifteen different patent pools if you want to guess how they ruined what they had), with everyone using MPEG almost exclusively for decades and AVC+AAC in particular seeing almost literally 100% adoption, and now HEVC/VVC have pathetic adoption while everyone loves VP9 and AV1

Golden State is the anti-Indiana or the team that Indiana thinks they are. Team over individual success. A joyful and inclusive fan culture that even opponents really respect. I just had an epiphany (I don't think it is a revolutionary idea, it just occurred to be for real for the first time) that one of the more important things a manager must do, to be successful is to deal with massive asymmetries. A manager (especially if you're a CEO, for example) has a thousand important things to manage. One of your people may come to you with a singular thing that is the most important thing to them right now. It is your job to understand and respect that and treat it ... 1/2

I have a technical help question about Feeds. I follow and dip into over sixty feeds because it’s a great way to get a pulse on a niche subject here. Recently the feed layout has changed from giving me all of them and letting me scroll/explore to giving me a random set of only five of them.

If we really want to reduce immigration, it's would need to be the later parts of a detail plan. Up front it would require several years of investment is education and training. Not window dressing, real change like free tuition for all and means tested allowances for living expenses. Anything less is destined for failure, with lots of adverse side effects across the community. Failing to do that, ends in MAGA style blow back for it's electoral supports.

I bet you there's fifteen miles of AIslop behind it these days. Because they think everyone listens to normie music and didn't consider that maybe "guy screaming over five different samples of a trash compactor" would be the sort of situation that requires a human touch. Even before that, though, the second they ended their partnership with Genius Lyrics it was all downhill from there.

  25. I don’t think most folks are buying smartphones expecting high-end camera quality. They’re expecting a device with reasonable cameras for casual or professional purposes on a device that also meets other needs. Comparing the two comes across as silly at best, or as ragebait in some cases.

  26. Spider-Noir was a lot of fun. But I’m a sucker for all the noir tropes, so every long shadow, smoke-filled room, and Dutch angle made me smile. And that’s before we even get to Cage’s zany performance. The Outstanding Cinematography Emmy Award is well deserved. Director of photography, Darran Tiernan also worked on Penguin and Perry Mason, which makes total sense. He’s on my radar to look for now in future projects. Fav shot: This split diopter and Dutch angle in one frame! #SpiderNoir #TV
