When the choice is between living with severe pain that could be reduced if the system didn't place access to necessary care out of reach or assisted suicide, the system has long ago taken away autonomy. Because autonomy requires the option to access the care that may reduce the pain.

Ted Lasso, I am holding it against you (and all the people who made you) that you not only referred positively to Harry Potter, you had a character use the phrase "spirit animal." It's 2026, DO BETTER.

When I think about it, I think the only post-Lucasarts Star Wars game I enjoyed was Squadrons. And it was flawed, but it was cool in VR and it touched on Nostalgia for the older space fighter sims.

It feels beneath me to even acknowledge this ""trend"" but the terf wizard redraw thing getting declared to be about "letting men feel again" amidst another wave of high profile rapists getting outed is so wantonly and unfathomably disgusting and you people need to realize that that is the *point*

What do you want the new default styling to be for HTML fieldset? Here’s what it’s been forever — a box around things, with the legend text placed over the middle of the line at the top left. (See developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/W... for more.)

  7. Just praising Vivaldi for creating a genuine rare mix of customisation + privacy. I cannot state it enough how refreshing it is that I can completely change the way the browser looks when I get bored. You guys created something amazing, and I hope you can continue what you doing. You gained a costumer for life.

I really only envy the rich one thing: the peace of mind that comes from knowing that if something happens you have the money to throw at a problem. Money does not solve all problems -- but it sure as hell makes dealing with problems that can't be avoided much easier. Someone's sick? You don't have to worry about paying medical bills, affording medications, etc. Somebody got drunk and plowed into your car last night? Sucks, but if you have enough money, it's just a minor hassle and not a catastrophe. Call a tow truck, your insurance, and rent a car while everything gets sorted out. Your kid needs braces? No problem. Money.

Kids going to college? Tuition and rent are not a problem. Visiting at will? No problem. Worrying about your kid while they're away? Sorry - you're on your own with that one... but you know you have the money to deal with most problems. Someone died? All the money in the world won't bring them back -- but not having to worry about, say, funeral expenses and all the financial impacts makes it easier to just deal with the grief.

  10. Had delicious ramen in Yamamori for the first time in ages. I'm guessing it must be one of the longest standing Japanese restaurants in Dublin. Still great. Much better than Musashi and some of the other newer spots.

This escalation by Russia into International Waters and the EU is not good. What will DFT do about it? Probably just cozy up to Putin and let it continue. I have a bad feeling about this! #Russia #drones #EU #Ukraine arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/1…

  12. that art trend going around that will not be named sucks for many many evil reasons but it also sucks that artists and cosplayers who are not remotely clued in across language borders are joining in because they just see "hot blonde anime girl," so it's blown up even more.

Still shocked by the blatantness of it all. I've seen my fair share of transphobia at workplaces. Heck I was fired once right after speaking up about a coworker's remarks. But having it thrown in my face like this with not even an attempt at disguise, that's new.

  16. In the West Wing-verse, President Bartlett was just reelected. It was apparently a tough campaign, but then he pulled ahead at the end and won in a landslide. According to the show, he gave a phenomenal debate performance in which he embraced the complexity of the world and delved deeply into issues and solutions. And this swayed something like 70% of undecided voters to vote for him. So, still a fairy tale, but the angle took a little shift there. Fairy tale about the american electorate.

I think I’ve got down to what bothers me about AI coding — obviously aside from all the theft, environmental costs and financial scamming going on. When using AI, at best you’re reviewing the code. You’re not living the writing of it. This feels hollow as well as a major risk.

Making my way through Flanagan's Carrie series, I love seeing the scenes & elements that were lifted from the book & the way they perfectly blend with the modern reimagining of the story. The performances are excellent, & I'm excited to see how some of these teased twists play out.

🐈‍⬛ microsoft charging full price for the switch 2 upgrade of minecraft bedrock (as a whole separate game download, not an upgrade pack) and only offering a "limited time promotion" for digital owners (no compensation for physical release owners) is a horrendously disgusting thing to even entertain doing and of course a very microsoft thing to do we are getting DANGEROUSLY close to voiding their "we don't charge for updates" claim because they're gating vibrant visuals and (assumedly) performance and stability improvements behind buying this 9 year old port again if you miss their """generous offer""" or have the game physically we literally have the whole upgrade pack thing going on, which is as elegant of a solution to the cross-gen switch game upgrade problem that nintendo are ever going to offer, or at the very least games like Deltarune offer one switch version of the game for free if you've ever bought the other

  21. Pleased we seem to have the old-style Conservative party back. Let's have the debate about whether social democracy or laissez-faire works better for most British people. This is a debate social democracy can absolutely win and so much better than arguing whether Bukayo Saka is English or not.

Chuck Klosterman's most recent book, "Rock*," imagines an alternate history of 20th Century music where the Beatles fade into obscurity and Velvet Underground became the biggest mainstream rock band in history. The Velvet Underground are "kind of ground zero" for the idea that there are, on the one hand, bands for critics and serious music fans and, on the other hand, commercial bands. And often the critics and superfans don't take the megabands seriously. And over the last 20 years those two kinds of bands have converged. Of course this conversation is about a lot more than pop music.

    Show more of this post

Klosterman talks with podcast host and fellow journalist Derek Thompson about fame and popularity, culture, contingency, why things become popular and the decline of reading. It's a fascinating conversation, like when you go into a bar and start talking with a stranger who has a million fascinating things to say about history, philosophy and pop culture, and you end up talking for hours and then you probably never see the guy again. theringer.com/podcasts/plain-e…

As a parent of a Kid Who Reads and a Kid Who Is Starting to Read, I 100% believe that publishing could put even a little more effort into MG and be rewarded for it. Kids *are* reading. I see it among 9yo's schoolmates, I see it among 5yo's. They love the school library. They love being read to.

  32. Our current National government proposing random drug testing for people on jobseekers benefits. Given the importance of their jobs, I think maybe it should be mandatory for MPs. That and breath testing for alcohol. Similarly, I think their wage in parliament should match that of job seeking benefit, and the meals they get when at parliament be the same as school dinners. It might concentrate their minds a bit on what the impacts of their decisions actually are
