Labour and Conservative Governments have been hiding the real scale of the climate crisis They know that if everyone knew the true threats, we would make them act - the oil and gas billionaire funders of those parties don't want that to happen www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I have seen complaints about there not being enough grad school AUs and i am going to hold your hand when i tell you many people don’t even get a bachelor’s degree. i think the universality of high school is what makes those AUs so popular.

Does anyone know what causes a lot of YouTubers to get their YouTube channels hacked? So that way we can make a video to prevent no one else from getting their Channel hacked or their Gmail account as well. So we can help them

So is #rfc5424 aka structured logging well supported these days? I can't find much on support for it, only people saying that "lumberjack is next" but that also doesn't seem to be supported well either. What's a decent protocol for remote structured logging these days?

We need to be less hysterical about potential AMOC collapse in 2100 and way more hysterical about the actual mega El Niño in 2027. politico.eu/article/climate-ch…

Good morning blueskee, does anyone have any recommendations on IDEs for Linux that aren't chock full of AI slop, and aren't just trying to push you to spend $$$'s on slop agents?

It's interesting how much the flow of YCH week has changed It used to be that people would start at SB and slowly inch up over the course of a dozen or so bids Now people jump right to the top tier on day one sometimes. The lack of comments/views makes it feel like it's doing badly, but it's not!

Three-part question for NFL stat people: 1) What would the spread be for HOU (0-4) vs MIN (4-0) on a neutral field 2) has an 0-4 team ever been favored in a game against a 4-0 team 3) we all agree the Texans are better than the Vikings right

Would #AI exist without the funding from billionaires? I mean without the crazy concentration of wealth where people can invest massive amounts and not fear that losing it will impact their lives, how would modern life be different? Any good idea would still happen, just slowly without causing so much disruption so quickly that it can outpace the regulation we eventually decide it needs. The market story is that people are supposed to slowly grow sustainable businesses and face competition.

Homophobia is systemic and implicit like all bigotry and oppression but it feels like instead of being challenged, implicit homophobia is almost embraced and that's how we ended up with the 'ironic homophobia' epidemic

  12. So we have reached the final quarter of 2026. When you stop and look at things, is 2026 the worst year for the gaming industry ever? Does 2025 still take the cake? Share your thoughts on @giantbomb.com! Link: forum.giantbomb.com/topic/785/we... #games #gaming #gamenews #gamingnews #giantbomb

The SBC and the benefits calculator are both very squirrelly about what my coverage is for durable medical equipment (a CPAP). I think it's 100% covered, but if I hit my out of pocket limit, the cost line just says "cost varies".

I have made some pretty good dishes with firm/extra firm tofu. I am not sure I have ever made anything with soft tofu that I have been totally happy with. Made a thai curry with it tonight and it was fine but not great. Any ideas for great dishes that use soft tofu as a main ingredient #foodsky ?

  15. @GodotFest Heya, just wondering if there is a rough timetable (like, very rough, something like "Start 10 AM, End 6 PM (Both Days)" or similiar? While writing I found the schedule for 2025 and it seems that ~5pm/5:30pm was the end for both days. Was just wondering if I need another night at the hotel. (I remember the Godotcon in Berlin ending at something like 3pm...) Cheers!

  16. I honestly think Breanna Stewart is one of the most undervalued players in the league. Yes, everyone knows she’s great, but it’s easy to get complacent and take for granted just how great she is. This season, she has absolutely been the engine keeping the Liberty running.

  22. Pleased we seem to have the old-style Conservative party back. Let's have the debate about whether social democracy or laissez-faire works better for most British people. This is a debate social democracy can absolutely win and so much better than arguing whether Bukayo Saka is English or not.

  23. a lot of the stuff with quantum physics isn't nearly as daunting as it seems at first brush, like maybe you hear about a crystal that can split one photon into two photons, and that sounds crazy, until you hear, oh, each photon has less energy than the original one? okay, thats not too weird then the underlying mechanics of exactly why everything works the exact way it does can get very complicated, but in the end everything tends to shake out nice and neatly, everything kinda comes back around to nothing can be created or destroyed, just moved around

Anyway, please send me paper recommendations showing the measurably ill effects of the use of LLMs in academic use. Every angle you can think of: - deskilling effects - plagiarism and copyright - is the generated code actually licensable? - measurable vs. perceived productivity - technical debt - code quality / readability … You want a #seminar on #slop – okay (#malicious_compliance activated). I really appreciate RenderScape's takes about the Reignited discourse on the TL. It has been so jarring seeing some wildly accusatory / inflammatory takes from others, (whom I assume (poorly) as OSRS players) I would repeat my takes but it's been so tiring :c

Do “24 hour” pharmacies actually exist in the UK? All of the ones listed near me either (a) don’t exist, as in: appear to be a Google Maps data error, or (b) are in 24-hour Asda stores, but close at 8pm.

  27. Yelling about AI literacy instead of actually holding tech/media companies to account is so exhausting and repeats a tired refrain. First it was media literacy. Then it was social media literacy. Now it's AI literacy. It's not a literacy crisis when the technologies are working as designed.

  28. The key message of the Conservative Party conference was 'we are a party for the rich, run but the rich'.... with an economic model (if we can really dignify their pronouncements, thus) that has been discredited by the UK's experience of it, and inadequately masks (further) enrichment of the monied elite. If they (again) manage to convince voters the kowtowing to the rich is the road to (renewed) prosperity, we should at least congratulate them on their powers of persuasion. #Tories #politics

On the third anniversary of the attack in Israel by Hamas that killed 1209 people, it's time to look at the response by Israel. You don't kill 74,000 people, including more than 20,000 children by mistake. This is not acceptable collateral damage, it is ethnic cleansing.

How does a boundary rendering update sound? Before: Mixed datasets meant a boundary could be disputed at zoom 8 but not at zoom 4. Now: Single-line boundaries, normalized claimed_by property, merged features with matching attributes. Smaller tiles, same visual output. Every boundary is consistently marked as disputed or non-disputed at every zoom level, and we've cleaned up inconsistencies, like the Korean border. @ianthetechie explains it. #BuildWithStadiaMaps stadiamaps.com/blog/updated-bo…

  31. It's 2026 and making "Taylor's music is bad" jokes still, after 20 years, makes people feel edgy. The Daily Show? Really? Haters are literally so obsessed, jealous of the attention, too stupid to understand her music or too desperate for attention to just ignore it.

It’s funny to hear developers whine about AI-related job loss. Software typically exists to do things humans would have done manually (and been paid to do). Anyone who’s been a professional engineer long enough has effectively eliminated thousands of jobs. I don’t see a future with fewer engineers than today, but the barriers to entry and the optimal skill sets are changing. That will push some folks out, but it’ll open the door to many who just never groked code.
