  1. You want to know what’s my favorite thing about you? How you always show up, even when you’re not feeling your best. That’s not easy. Make sure you show up for yourself and take your meds with some water, friend.

A big (double) rainbow on last night's dog walk. The dog was not particularly impressed but I stopped to take a picture!

When I was in high school I worked at Burger King for about a year and a half. I would finish up well after midnight, then, still keyed up from being 17, I would drive around with this album on VERY LOUD, INDEED with the windows down because there were no girls to be found anywhere in a small, Midwestern town at that hour Now, when I'm constantly awoken by the local college kids at 3am, I think Karma's a bitch and roll over and go back to sleep youtube.com/watch?v=b_Q6FxWEqE…

Playing with loveage, which is an INCREDIBLY prolific herb that's quite strong flavored. (Imagine the strongest celery you've tasted -- now even stronger, and cross it with parsley. It's something that is hard to use at the level I use, say, cilantro.) I've got a literal bucketful of it that I'm trying to figure out if I can do anything fun with. So far, my best guess has been trying to brine some of it in a 20% salt solution and see if the resulting goo is good for soups/stews/flavoring. That's made two jars and I still have a bucket of the stuff. 🤣

some days the overwhelm of basically starting over with exercise, on top of doing it because I have a hyper-mobile body that desperately needs stability, just brings all that grief back up of having to manage this condition for the rest of my life

  6. I'm seriously considering now to re-create all of my open pull requests on the release branch, just to make it more likely to get them merged... But that would probably mean hours of work and re-compiling the engine for the n-th time 😖

Three good things: 1. I spotted an avocado under the car seat and it is perfectly ripe and part of lunch. 2. Beautiful display at the library for migratory birds. 3. Cats sleeping or playing quietly. #3goodthings

Oh FFS… one of the higher ups at my place of work (biophysics and optics) was asking me, if I was willing to give a seminar on #AI and how to effectively use it. For context: I'm surrounded by sloperators; even my boss has become addicted. The number of times I'm told "you could be so much more productive, if you just used AI" (no I wouldn't because I don't measure productivity in LoC). Anyway, if I'm going to give that seminar, it's going to be a "don't use #slopbots" angle.

Got contacts for the first time in a few years and slept in them like a dumbass rather than letting my eyes get used to contacts before adding in the extra stress, so anyway, I look like I’ve got a mild case of Ebola at work today. That’s fun. Some slight pressure but no real pain; think I got them out before it got bad.

  12. Sent several book pitches out to editors. Among them: dark academia, dark fantasy, space opera, horror collection, paranormal romance, and a mainstream thriller/horror. All of them with my characteristic dark threads woven through, but as always, some light as well.

  13. In 2012, I stood on a stage with Anne Carson as a volunteer grad student to help her perform BRACKO, an adaptation of Sappho, where my job was to say the word "bracket" every time there was a bracket, which was more than two hundred times

  14. Today in the greenhouse... another gem, Lithops geyeri, from a small area in the eastern Richtersveld in South Africa, growing in quartzite. Described as normally being in shades of grey, buff or beige but mine is this lovely green. Bought in 2012 as a small plant and doing really well. #Succulents #Lithops #BloomScrolling

some notes on performing at October AlgoRhythms: - is the event like a bright star - slowly shrinking but becoming more brilliant as it does so? - white dwarf future or supernova? - I had in mind a list of three tracks that I had previously written, a couple in last week, one from august - I couldn't find one of them, but eventually did - great dancing by the audience, that was a real buzz - in my code-jay-ing comfort zone, making use of midi controller to add variation - this breaks my streak of about three from-scratch solo performances - i'm not sure if i'll ever be able to code fast, I don't come up with ideas the same way under pressure, can't think straight on stage mostly - didn't look up enough despite telling Chau that I was intending to shortly before starting - played the last track backwards somehow hehe but it was all good - was fun to perform with Chau on vis as always : )

I went to a restaurant a couple days ago and the waiter gave us the menu's and said what the mocktails of the day were and that "we can turn them into a cocktail if you prefer". I love that moctails were the default! Never had that before

Spent some time on my OpenBSD installation on an X270 yesterday. First of all I setup cwm, and then downloaded my old dwm install and put that on it. It is now a more than usable laptop, and I will be using it daily to become more comfortable with it. My one grouch is not due to #OpenBSD: I have #nextcloud installed on a server, and the client installed on all my machines. For Linux machines running the likes of plasma, the client uses kwallet for authorisation, but I haven't been able to get it working on OpenBSD yet. To be honest, for file sharing and diary management Nextcloud is overkill, so I should take the opportunity to look for a less integrated solution that I can get an understanding of from the operating system up...

I'd originally thought there was a substantial gap between reading Mae Dean's coming out comic and me starting up my femme burner accounts. Then I checked the timestamps and realized I'd been on those burner accounts for nine months before coming out. I'd started them two weeks after the comic.

Cleaning out a closet, we found one of the kids’ karate belts from when they were younger. In an effort to make things more exciting for Biscuit T. Dog, my wife tied the belt around his oblately spherical chicken simulacrum so we could like drag it and such for chasing. Biscuit is…confused. He always has his chicken in his mouth, takes it outside with him when he goes pee, etc. Anyway now he very gingerly nudges his chicken until he can pick it up without having any of the belt in his mouth.

  21. Interesting news from work. A good friend works in a position that sees what's happening on the AI front at work. Said that leadership has brought in a consulting group that evaluates where AI can replace humans and they're currently evaluating my department of around 200 folk. Now, I've been saying this could happen, but only my buddy and I agree, maybe one other person. Sooo... RIP our jobs in 2027 probably.

Spent 1:55 writing tonight, and got 859 words done. Also some structural/outlining stuff that was necessary before I could start working on "actual" words. Got a scene in progress, and it's getting heavy. Good, that's what it should do! People are under pressure. #writing #AmWriting

Here’s an AI use at work I don’t mind. Our department is responsible managing for *a lot* of spend. 9 digits worth. Anyways, we didn’t have a Spent Intelligence platform. We were doing that shit “by hand” and hoping for the best. Stuff got done, but it would take days to pull together a report.

The vintage shopping gods have been blessing me with a lot of incredible leather lately, but NOLA weather hasn’t gotten the memo about it being fall yet. Thinking about making a little visit to NYC (and perhaps a night in DC too?) in November…

  28. Ok, it's been 15-something years I haven't touched SolidWorks but just to make an assembly, I could be able to use FreeCAD just by instinct, right? *20 minutes later* Well, I don't know how to "properly" move objects other than "transforming" them, I can't find a grid to align stuff and it crashed when duplicating pieces. Ok.
