Fun SK fact while I'm thinking about mastodon excavation-- I got to help excavate a mastodon when I was a wee baby (20 years old)! My youngest sister was part of a professional archaeology and paleontology club at the time (she's now a bioanthropology student) and I went along just to see it

  2. Yesterday, I had my first restaurant meal since the Covid pandemic started: Hutchie Catering and Caribbean Restaurant, on Main Street, Toronto. Delicious rotis. We used to live in Toronto, with a Jamaican take-out on the same block so we were regulars, but there aren't any out here. We were the only customers at the time so we had a long conversation with the very friendly waitress, about life, the universe and everything. #food #Caribbean

  3. Hey. Psst. Y’all are rad. Hydrate your skeletons. Take your meds. Check your posture. Have a snack. Whatever you need to do today/tonight, I believe in you. No matter how big or small it may be. I hope the week brings joy, relief, laughter, success, coziness. You got this. 💕

We took friends to our favorite local winery and a Belgian couple was there buying wine. They quickly figured I was American and asked us about trump. Their question was how trump got elected after his disastrous first term, and I never have an answer to that. We're asked that very often.

  5. When Sean first came home, he wasn't sure he wanted to leave my bedroom, much less come downstairs. I thought, "Well, little guy got dumped in a cardboard box in the rain and maybe he thinks people suck and only wants 3 hots & a cot - and I will give him the best 3 hots & a cot I can." I'm so glad he decided we were OK, and loves to snooze next to me - but even if he didn't, he'd still have the best food, roof, & bed I could give him, and I'd still love him to bits.

  6. Someday I shall be good enough to beat Crash Bandicoot 2 in one sitting (all crystals, not 100%, that is). Sigh. Got to "Road to Ruin" tonight before running out of lives. Already good enough to get every crystal in Warped in one sitting, but definitely not 1 or 2 yet. Actually closer in Crash 1...

  7. Mine lists “Maintains organized living spaces” under Interests and Hobbies and notes that I read mystery novels regularly and care for guinea pigs extensively. In summary: I am evidently the world’s most boring person, but nobody, not even Amazon, thinks my buttocks are flat.

  8. I got my first pretty-useless AI/#clanker-driven Security Advisory report on #github. Not that it was _wrong_, just that it's a report for a demo driver in my hobby lzw project (clobbers input file if same as output file), which I only published binaries for to learn how it works. I guess I should actually just remove all releases, since the release flow is semi-broken anyway.

During a quiet moment in work last night I caught the glorious sight of the setting sun shooting down shards of white light through the clouds & down onto the hills in the background & the sea in the foreground. Nature never fails me. 💚 #sunset #eastcoastkin #wellbeing #clouds #livingonthecoast

  10. Today feels a little monumental. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago. This has been really really hard. It was really hard because I’ve been raw dogging menopause. Today I get to start taking some stuff to help with that.

My arms still hurt from Saturday’s vaccinations and my cold, 2 weeks in and apparently on the way out, has just introduced a scratchy throat into the mix. Lovely. Still, a good 20 minutes @ 26 on the erg this evening and off out for a paddle with the race crew at 7am. Maybe a nap tomorrow afternoon, eh? 🚣🏿 💪 💉 🦠

  12. I was thinking it might be fun to figure out a way to record me drawing and make a fake youtube series called "the joy of paint(1)ing" where I pleasantly explain what i'm doing and occasionally also say shit like "there's no such thing as a bad line, just lines you're going to draw over with better lines" and "they say art is hard, but you know what is also hard? cock.", but right now all i've got is "the losing half an hour of work of paint(1)ing"

I found an old, I mean *old* notebook in which 10yo me started writing a story. It's SF with hovercrafts and spaceships and lasers and basically all the cool tech from Star Wars, but in a different order. And not one character. Except maybe the speeder. That speeder saw some shit, man.

  16. Had a realisation today. The thing where I rush around and always look super busy is actually a bit of a defence mechanism against actually having to do small talk etc. Hadn’t even realised I was doing that.

  17. I think I'm going to make my asparagus pizza with a basil pesto sauce, lemon zest, and fried tofu. With a sprinkle of olive oil. No cheese because vegan and not really a fan of vegan 'cheese'.

  18. I'm seriously considering now to re-create all of my open pull requests on the release branch, just to make it more likely to get them merged... But that would probably mean hours of work and re-compiling the engine for the n-th time 😖

I'd originally thought there was a substantial gap between reading Mae Dean's coming out comic and me starting up my femme burner accounts. Then I checked the timestamps and realized I'd been on those burner accounts for nine months before coming out. I'd started them two weeks after the comic.

Yesterday, we celebrated the last day of summer (6 Oct, this is fine) with walkies along the lakeside at Bewl Water. Paws got wet but the swimming lessons last weekend did not inspire any further swimming. #dog #DogsOfMastodon #corgi

I'm watching The Haunting (1999) while doing illustration work. This movie, I think I only saw it through once. But it left a HUGE impression on me. That house! I spent ages only vaguely remembering this movie and I'm delighted I figured it out so I can see the house again.

Oh FFS… one of the higher ups at my place of work (biophysics and optics) was asking me, if I was willing to give a seminar on #AI and how to effectively use it. For context: I'm surrounded by sloperators; even my boss has become addicted. The number of times I'm told "you could be so much more productive, if you just used AI" (no I wouldn't because I don't measure productivity in LoC). Anyway, if I'm going to give that seminar, it's going to be a "don't use #slopbots" angle.

Ha! On my fourth try, I finally found the right aerator size for this bathroom faucet in our Airbnb! (I know, I should have had the owner do it. But it seemed easier to do it myself. And then I didn’t want to turn back. Sometimes you just don’t have the spoons to give up.)

Got contacts for the first time in a few years and slept in them like a dumbass rather than letting my eyes get used to contacts before adding in the extra stress, so anyway, I look like I’ve got a mild case of Ebola at work today. That’s fun. Some slight pressure but no real pain; think I got them out before it got bad.

It was never clear to me as a kid how ten green bottles could hang on a wall, - whether there was some kind of hook or loop system going on etc - but now I’m wondering whether “hanging” means, you know, like, hanging out, although I’m not sure that sense of the word existed in Olden Days (morning)

For no particular reason I today translated my 30-ish years old unstarted epic poem, The one-legged knights of Grôt, from Norwegian into English. The one-legged knights of Grôt In the valley of death, back to back the two. One with a sandal, the other a shoe. #writing
