How it works

  1. For all the talk about the vaunted San Diego bullpen, all 3 Brewers wins had the game winning hit come off the San Diego bullpen. Contreras off Morejon in game 1, Chourio off Miller in game 2, and Chourio off Rodriguez in game 4. Just thought that was kinda interesting.

My favorite part of being a baseball fan is how exceptional the league is at making sure we are discussing potential work stoppages at a time when the very best teams are fighting for the World Series. No other league does this.

  3. Dang, I didn't realize that the Mets had a good season this year:

  4. i know very little about nascar, but i saw a doc about dale earnhardt's death, & his racing style that was very bump-and-runny & then engine rate limiters compounded it, brought the cars closer together for more accidents. so a combo of aggressive driving and an increasingly dangerous environment

Watching LVA/GSV tonight and thinking again about how the Atlanta Dream wore t-shirts encouraging fans to vote for the US senate candidate running against their owner. And then the owner lost and sold her stake in the team! Absolutely GOATed shit.

The Braves season is over. In a year where they lost Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, Bryce Elder, Reynaldo Lopez and other arms to injury, getting to the NLDS wasn't an awful result IMO. What do the Braves look like for 2027? www.baseballamerica.com/stories/what...

    Opinion
  7. I honestly think Breanna Stewart is one of the most undervalued players in the league. Yes, everyone knows she’s great, but it’s easy to get complacent and take for granted just how great she is. This season, she has absolutely been the engine keeping the Liberty running.

Miles Kelly with the team-high 24pts on 6/11 3PT. He shot 39% in the GL last year on almost 300 attempts. If you want to know what the Dubs are prioritizing in Santa Cruz this year developmentally? It's movement shooters. Cryer, Kelly, Chance McMillian, Tyler Burton, etc

Everyone will be talking about the interference call but nobody will be talking about the clutch challenge by Hicks one batter before which directly saved one run and may have eventuallly saved more.

Aaron Ashby exorcised some postseason demons against the Padres, his uncle's former team. In 9.1 playoff innings before this series, he had allowed 28 baserunners. 16 hits, 10 walks, 2 hit batters. This series: 5.2 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks and 0 runs. A series MVP candidate.

  11. Bulls preseason opener in the books. Matas Buzelis explored his new freedom. Dailyn Swain got tested as a primary ballhandler. Tobe Awaka made an impact on the offensive glass. Caleb Wilson found the sledding tougher against NBA defenders. That's what stress tests are for.

Ronald Acuna Jr. has Ohtani type talent, but seems cool with acting like a fucking fool. You are a professional baseball player, fucking act and perform like it. It isn't the recent shin injury. And this isn't Mardi Gras. Fuck!

This is why baseball has curdled for me over the last couple years. MLB isn’t currently planning for a World Series. It’s planning for the owners to lock out the players. They have engineered a lockout and will then blame it on players for not accepting less. links.e1.nytimes.com/a/sc/PchhwJ1...

I am amazed by the logistics of playoff hosting. "Hey Comiskey Park you might be hosting 44,000 visitors tomorrow? You got enough drinks? We'll probably have the time nailed down before midnight." (Me, I'm grateful I can wrangle a conference room reservation and a boxed coffee order on 24h notice.)

It’s been a huge problem for a while now. Tough to say who Dallas is developing from their academy. It seemed as if the club wanted to go back its roots with Quill but even he’s playing lineups that are the same age as what Estevez played (who many fans claim stifled the pipeline)

i cannot remember so, so many important things, but a fan interferes with a Yankee home run tonight and i can immediately pull up the memory (and YouTube clip) of Jeffrey Maier in the 1996 ALDS with Jeter hitting and Tony Tarasco in right for the Orioles

  18. I made some excuses for Vegas after Game 1, about how they were struggling to deal with rebounding out of all the switches (like how teams often struggle to rebound out of a zone). But too many of these rebounds are just GSV outworking them. Can't happen. At least not this often. #WNBA

  19. I was 12 standing in my parent’s basement watching the Yankees - the Jeter, Cano, Swisher, Matsui, Sabathia, etc. - Yankees, win the WS Brian Cashman and the Steinbrenners will never, ever construct a team like that again.

    Opinion
  20. I will never forget when he basically told Andy Green to meet him outside, and then Justin Turner's face behind him. 😂 He's a terrific players manager and the last few years an even better tactician. That's my dude.

Anti-replay discourse takes a brief holiday. Perfect justice on a tough "home run or not and where do you put the runner?" call in Rays-Yankees. Technology helps sometimes. Also ABS is accepted by home crowds even when the news is bad.

  22. the downside to Gabby Williams ascending to flat out superstardom and becoming my favorite player in the W is that it will toxically justify my belief in hundreds of wings who will never learn to dribble

Seems to me that, other than WS rings, the Tampa Bay Rays have a case for being the most successful franchise in MLB history when considering their payroll imbalance.

The Dodgers beat Atlanta kinda like one Beats the Freeze - bit of a struggle but a triumph in the end. Now, their head start is gone and their vulnerabilities more evident in the forthcoming NLCS and, maybe, World Series. But still... www.usatoday.com/story/sports...

Golden State is the anti-Indiana or the team that Indiana thinks they are. Team over individual success. A joyful and inclusive fan culture that even opponents really respect. A reminder that you don’t have to throw other people under the bus in order to get ahead. And they’re making bank. #wnba

Brayden Burries rewarded the 10 Bucks fans still watching this game with a sick driving dunk and clutch defensive rebound. Free throw game from there but Bucks held on to win 128-126. Jenkins went young with the rotation and while imperfect the team was both better and more fun.

Baseball: Why does MLB actively despise cord-cutting fans? All I want is a way to know where to find any given game. The true-but-unhelpful answer is "platforms that carry (TBS, FS1)." Good luck finding those! I would gladly pay ONE PROVIDER (but not cable TV prices) to be able to watch all games.

This is what makes baseball great, and furthers my campaignt hat "every ballpark should have at least one unique feature/quirk that is in play, like WRigley's Ivy or the old hill in Houston. The new Tampa park needs to replicate the catwalks.

I have left Yankee Stadium *a lot* after being eliminated in the past 17 years, but I don't think the sentiment has ever been this... resigned. Dejected, perplexed, certainly angry, but never this level of, "Welp. I guess this is the new normal."

  31. Another thing that sucks about fragmented streaming sports coverage: you can’t listen to your home town announcers for live post-season play. Radio stations don’t sync w/ TV, probably on purpose due to rent-seeking marketing shit-stains. ⚾️

  32. It was a spectacular pull. I had the same thought but they said it before I could type it. While not Hall of Fame stuff, I thought Amin et al. were above-average. I also think a lot of #brewers fans are too used to home broadcasts and can't handle national broadcaster honesty. #NLDS #postseason

As cricketers, players like Ian Botham gave me many hours of uncomplicated joy. As ex-cricketers, less so. Tip: don't read his interview in The Times today unless you want that childhood joy to be diminished even further...
