Haven’t had a day off in four weeks but I let myself leave work at noon today so I finally got my hair all cleaned up, got a massage at a very fancy place, had a simple but perfect dinner and glass of wine, and got a ridiculous but fun little dessert on my way home.

I'm 41 today. It sounds like a big year. It sort of is, but after 40, who cares? I'm just so incredibly happy to be here, so thankful to be alive, to be able to see the world, meet all the people in it, eat all the food, do all the things. I can't wait for more. The women in my family are long-lived, and I'm looking forward to it because I feel like I am going to be curiously and voraciously in love with the world forever. Since I was a child I have always looked forward to being '40 something'. In my mind, I had no doubt that I was going to be where I want to be, doing what I want. I am. ---

I'm in Kathmandu, Nepal: two years ago, one of my oldest friends told me that he was going to gift me a birthday gift to his home city the moment I was able to travel again. Once I got word that I could, we made plans. I've known him for more than 20 years. My wife noted yesterday that I've known many of my friends for 10 - 29 years. I feel immensely lucky to have old friends everywhere who I've kept in touch with. I may not be the sort of person who goes out very frequently with friends, given that many of my friends live in different cities or countries, but I feel like I've been able to just pick up on old friendships by talking from time to time, and visiting sometimes. I feel like I'm in a new season of life. One in which exploration, adventure, and abundance are back in my life. I am surrounded by friends and family I love and trust, and I have so much joy to share. It wasn't always this way, including when I was very ill and depressed for a very long time, so this is especially special.

Had the carbon monoxide alarm go off, much to my startlement, so I stepped outside and then looked up what the beep pattern meant to see if I needed to warn the neighbors, but it was just its "end of life" warning, so I put in a maintenance request to replace it and took out the battery.

I didn't expect my 5th grade students to be very interested in the collection of "mathematical patterns in nature" photos I have. They will design a pattern for the end papers of the book they are binding. The book is about how information is stored and includes an explanation of how it was bound, encryption, hexadecimal, and other projects from this fun class I get to teach. But they really loved looking at the photos and trying to identify what they were and how they related to math.

Over the years, I’ve walked my dogs on all the sidewalks of the University by my house. I’ve met most of the grounds and facility staff, police officers and bus drivers. Usually with a wave, smile and ‘beautiful dogs’. Amazing the people I meet who bring me joy and I don’t even know their name.

Ha! On my fourth try, I finally found the right aerator size for this bathroom faucet in our Airbnb! (I know, I should have had the owner do it. But it seemed easier to do it myself. And then I didn’t want to turn back. Sometimes you just don’t have the spoons to give up.)

bought a new heat bulb for my bearded dragon earlier this evening cause his burned out and also picked up some food for me and the husband on the way back and when walking back to the apartment I fumbled with my keys and the food and the bulb when soaring out of my hands and shattered on the asphalt

Break day today in Osaka, so we went to the Universal Theme Park as they had a Frieren Collab (my travel partner is a huge Frieren fan). Had a blast at the park, turned out they also had a One Piece Collab, as well as a huge Halloween event with zombies roaming the park after dark

Groaning under the chores this morning I throw the clothes into the washing machine and hit the button and turn to the next chore. As I do so I suddenly think of my great-grandmother who lived on a simple little farm and had to wash the clothes by hand and with water carried from a nearby stream. Suddenly I stop groaning as I realise how easy I have it. I kick myself in my butt and straighten up and the sun starts shining and the day looks dead easy.

We leave Iceland today—4yo is completely miserable about it and does NOT want to leave. He made a deal with one of his friends that he could sleep under the other’s bed and then let me know that I could fly home by myself because he would prefer to stay in Iceland 😢

Good Morning Tiny Dancers. Late start for work today so I decided to do something different and went for a coffee. Also a chunk of the "cinnamon scroll slab" which is under the counter for the staff to dip into. Poor BFF got into a "not all men" argument where I got a bit shouty. Anyway, chemist run, IGA run forgot biscuits nevermind. Tomorrow is another day, perhaps one where I will remember to buy biscuits.

Back in lockdown, I bought myself a broom for my birthday and put it aside until the day mostly as a joke. But when my birthday came (a week or two later) I couldn’t find it. To this day I have no idea what happened. I think about it sometimes just to feel stupid. Who loses a whole broom? Me. I did.

I'm currently visiting Whidbey Island in Washington state. It was foggy for much of our time here but then it cleared off just in time for sunset... and luckily I caught it, no enhancements. Heading back to Seattle tomorrow then on home to Texas. I will be back for sure.

Nobody tells you what you’ll need ahead of time before you go do something official. If you try to ask, they’ll get weirded out that you’re grilling them and not tell you, but when you show up you’re always missing something. Anyway I went back and forth across town like six or seven times today.

I have 31 items on my to-do list between now and when I board a plane on Thursday 10/15. That means I'll have to do three to four things per day. There might even be certain days where I have to do as many as five things. I don't know if anyone's ever attempted to do five entire things in a single day. It seems reckless

Part of what makes my fieldwork so intense is that I am not only doing interviews virtually everyday - sometimes twice a day - I'm also reconnecting with locals I've been getting to know for years, building new connections, following up on referrals and setting up new interviews for my next trip..

Has to buy a second set of headlights (700) because the first passenger replacement ($1300) is months off. Found one available now for $1900. 😵‍💫 All I want to do is drive the damn thing and now I hate it. It’s always something. Hopefully I can fix this. Front end may come in tomorrow, but then needs paint. And I think two other parts broke that need replacing. Won’t even get to really look till the weekend. I was better off without a car.

Okay, so, today is the last day of what is historically the worst week of my life every year. I've lost my dad, my best friend, nearly lost my Mom, had the worst dwelling move of my life and lost 50-75% of my belongings, been marooned without a working car (3x), and been hospitalized (3x). It sucks.
