How it works

  1. I so enjoy the protection provided to cyclists from motor vehicles by painted cycle lanes. #Sheffield #Cycling #BikeTooter

Not sure why pointing out that something used to be considered unremarkable is supposed to be evidence that the thing is not abusive. Many things now very generally recognized as problematic, abusive, or monstrous were once regarded as perfectly normal. Are we so sure that we already got them all?

  3. This is the first time I've heard of this concept, and the first example in the wiki article is freeways. I wonder if this is why young men, including myself, enjoy flashy sports cars. We spend half our lives driving at this point. It's a way to stand out and bring color into spaces full of nothing

  4. When Buddhists take on the trappings of religion they become just like any other religion, selling superstition for personal gain.

Too many car honks recently. Please remember that honks are for: - Alerting people to imminent danger, such as ICE agents in the vicinity. - Expressing your love your bikes. End of list.

Coordinate-free is the way to be — as long as the space of coordinate choices is contractible. To wit: Lazard's theorem says that formal group laws (i.e. formal groups + coordinate choice) have moduli ring L = ℤ[x₁,x₂,…]. The moduli stack of formal groups, though, is not affine.

All I can say as someone who has lived in Japan & visited often, is go there. It's a wonderful country with strange (to Western eyes) & interesting things seemingly around every corner. And unlike most of the rest of the world, the people are unfailingly polite. I'd go there for that alone.

I have seen complaints about there not being enough grad school AUs and i am going to hold your hand when i tell you many people don’t even get a bachelor’s degree. i think the universality of high school is what makes those AUs so popular.

At the risk of sounding a bit melodramatic, to me there is like a purity to pure math (it’s in the name) and it feels vulgar in a way to treat it this way and it seems like that’s at least partly the point

Every woman who comes forward and lays her trauma bare for the world to see does so hoping it will lead to a better world for women. It never does. And yet, we keep trying.

  12. current discourse has me reminded of my (notably very liberal) high school's sex ed classes where sexualization was portrayed as "the dark underbelly of sexuality" and not just... the social element of desire

    Opinion
  13. Seems like "social contagion", once a specific academic term for how suicide can seemingly spread through a population from a first instance had been degraded to mean "young people thinkin' stuff"

let's take this a step further and say, a majority of these people are also eager to convert others. once again; not necessarily in a specifically religious context, the specific religion or what takes its role is not the important part. that would instead be the "victory" of converting someone

If anyone is aware of early references to the rainbow as made up of a particular number of colours, please let me know. Intrigued to know if its ‘sevenfoldness’ is a relatively modern idea.

I heard Englishness defined as 'people who have been here for centuries' on Radio 4 this morning, and it went completely unchallenged

  19. protestant dogmatic disputes are like 'does it really make sense to hold to a calvinist soteriology while also embracing christian perfectionism?" while orthodox dogmatic disputes are like 'of *course* there are kafkaesque aerial trials conducted by sky demons, you atheist, you utter buffoon'

It's still wild to me, in a mildly concerning way, that current net speak (and by a presumably lesser extent how the youth speak) is this cursed mix of AAVE and 4chan incel talk and I wonder how much of it spills over into other languages too

  22. I just started listening to this but aaaaaah it's so exciting to have someone in a leadership position talk so positively and enthusiastically about not just transit but cities. not defensive about safety, affirmative about the joy and connection that people experience in urban spaces

For reference, the amount of SEXUAL CONTENT that used to be in wrestling. Not that there should be now, because it was extremely exploitive back then(which is more a WWE problem than a 'sexual content' problem). People pretended to have SEX IN THE RING IN THE EARLY 2000S.

I feel like it’s hard to express to people who got online after a certain era that culture wasn’t this conservative and censorious once upon a time. I mean, modern social media platforms are harsher on a lot of content than broadcast TV and magazines used to be.

  25. Did you know that "q" wasn't a officially a letter of the alphabet until it was codified by papal writ in 1283? Of course you didn't! It's not true, so how could you have known it?! Don't lie to me!

  26. Thought Chow's criticism of single native culture was interesting cause we usually think of reclaiming culture as something good after colonialism but she says how that can also erase differences within a population. Trying to maintain one national identity ends up silencing people in that culture?

Hearing Black Americans who are not from the East or West Coast say they weren’t exposed to Black people from the Caribbean, Africa, or Central or South America feels odd to me. On one hand I see it and understand why but on the other hand i’m like how does this happen.

  29. I was wondering if any NSW historians (or historians of NSW) could help me. I'm currently working with electoral rolls from 1930-1934 which divide electors up by 'Subdivisions'. I'm trying to figure out if these are the same as the Local Government Areas used in the 1933 Census. Thanks! 🗃️ #history

gonna need goyim (mostly white goyim, but what else is new) to be less weird about names. many ethnicities use multiple names! it's pretty common to have different names across different languages! id say go ask ur chinese friends, for example, but guessing they don't have any 🙃

  31. Not sure how to feel about the commoditization of “bespoke” fetish gear. It’s great that gear previously made in single digit quantities with years long queues are now available. But it undermines artists, & there’s safety risks with gear not designed by someone who knows proper safety practices.
