How it works

Didn't love the new Carrie. King was always great at portraying abusers; The struggle of the abused to rise up from oppression, and the strength of that fight creating a supernatural and satisfying vengeance. The series isn't any of that. But great acting, great cinematography, and great soundtrack.

  2. I just finished watching the new series adaptation of Carrie on Amazon and sweet, merciful baby Jebus man that was INCREDIBLE. That can't be all though. This has a real feeling of King's universe being brought to life and I'm here for it. I have Nick Fury "I'm putting a team together" chills.

There is a level of venom and spite in the writing that largely makes a movie a could feel lecherous end up feeling much more like deeply personal flailing of someone that feels isolated and insane trying to verbalise the pain and frustration they feel witnessing billionaires destroy the world.

  4. Watched Coraline. Clearly beautiful, and maybe I’m too close to it because I enjoy the book, but it felt like it dragged a bit, despite really nailing the aesthetic. I wish it had abbreviated some of the plot. Some of the visuals are astounding beautiful. #MovieReview

The new documentary Who is Martin Mull? on Netflix is one of the best ones I’ve seen in a while. I had no idea about half of his career, especially that his first passion was painting. Entertainment was a means for his art. His artwork is amazing.

Just saw the first episode of the new MST3K, and it was basically everything I was hoping for in a revival of my favorite era of the show. The writing, pacing, and art direction were A+++, and it featured *just* the right amount of lore-building.

Ted Lasso, I am holding it against you (and all the people who made you) that you not only referred positively to Harry Potter, you had a character use the phrase "spirit animal." It's 2026, DO BETTER.

  8. Been reading some of the new Carrie discourse and while I agree Hollywood being too cowardly to cast actresses who aren't conventionally attractive is a problem, I don't know how to tell people this but you can be normal-looking or even pretty and still get heavily bullied if you're somehow "weird".

people often talk about how actors playing evil characters doesn't make them evil but I think a version of this way more people are susceptible is assuming actors embody the positive traits and messages of characters they play

I think the theming around domestic violence in this movie is loaded and not always successful. What I actually found more interesting was the tension between parents and adult children and I wish there was more exploration of that.

And the poster is great. Very evocative. But a little misleading. If it were accurate it would show five Australians crying and apologizing over and over again while the specter of death loomed over them and all of us

Also You & Yours, a thoroughly decent consumer affairs show. I’ve done a lot of BBC over the years. Y&Y was the only programme that paid me. I was, in a sense, promoting a book (a guide to eBay) & said no fee was needed. They insisted on giving me £50 as I’d had to do some research. It’ll be missed.

Cancelling the Top Gear/Grand Tour guys not because Clarkson is a bigot who gets into fracases or whatever but because they frequently give their cars names, and that's problematic anthropomorphization

  14. PAN’S LABYRINTH was already a perfect film to the teenage me who had no clue about Francisco Franco or the Spanish Civil War. Watching it in our current political climate, with a history degree, in its new 3D conversion, on the big screen, it’s an overwhelmingly perfect film.

Content warningThe Celebrity Traitors ep 3

There’s going to be a landslide, and Richard E Grant will be buried under it. Richard, Richard, Richard. Couple of votes for Leigh-Anne; Blunt goes for Hannah, and Richard tries to throw shade on Bella. Julie noticed that Myha’la winked at Richard as she voted, and shares this with Sharon. Yes, Myha’la wanted to be a traitor, but sounded more that she was saying Richard was rubbish. Hannah says that she’s putting together a sheet of all possible worlds, eliminating the impossible. Works until she runs out of life. Joe does not have her spreadsheet - or her memory. #TheTraitors #Traitors #CelebrityTraitors

I can’t stress enough before trek let a bunch of guys who think the cia is badass write fascist fanfic for them it was debatable if Section 31 even existed or was just one small cadre of immoral freaks slipping through the cracks and larping

  17. now if you tied yourself up in knots over the accuracy of the Odyssey (it's a poem kids) have a fun look at the Percy Jackson films and tv series, clearly aimed at the teen market, and wilfully blending whatever myths they seem fit to employ - loads of fun - tv show is on Netflix.

  18. I thought Digger would be a Gregg Turkington ass movie and it turned out to be a genuinely great piece of satire, that also reflects heavily on the limitations of satire itself. It's also insane and frenetic, lol.

Scenes like this are why every bbc adaptation of pratchett’s work makes me want to eat glass. His work is incredibly cinematic, gives you a play by play of the shots and composition you’d need to sell the humor, and every time the british tv industry lays hands on it they trip over their own dick

  20. Just hit this episode in my re-watch of “Lost” and damn I always forget this is also the episode where Charlie dies. Season 3 was pretty mid (Nikki and Paulo, “Stranger in a Strange Land,” flashbacks were wearing thin), but they really stuck the landing.

  21. I don’t really know how to explain this but the new Carrie show feels almost too feminist if that makes sense? Like they’re saying all the right stuff sure, it’s all facts, but like… they just kinda do it over and over again It’s like each episode has a bit that just says “btw men historically suck”

I don't really think putting a preschooler show on the chopping block is great vibes but I do think that since doctor who is out to tender right now it's important for the bbc to hear that people aren't thrilled that the studio making tardis crew has a pro-gen ai policy in its creative pipeline

Seeing a lot of exasperation from British fans that the U.S is remaking Ludwig. Before we all get hurty feelings, consider: - Megan Ganz is doing it and she's fucking brilliant. - Humphrey Kerr is involved to and he's great (and British).

  24. MrsD watched the opening episode of Celebrity Traitors. She got about half way through before declaring it "a steaming pile of shite" and vowing never to watch it again. Shame she doesn't have the same thoughts about Coronation Street! 😉 Edit: Good to see she's picking up Scottish vernacular!

  25. Thursday TV question: do you hold on to the shows you binged in a weekend, or the ones you watched week by week for years? My guess is the slow ones stick harder, but I've been wrong before. Today's series quiz on BigRanks hands everybody an identical set, so trading scores afterward gives nothing away. Which kind of watching left more in your head? bigranks.com/quiz/series/ #TV #Television #Series #TVShows

I also rewatched the Knights of Guinevere pilot. Knowing the context that Dana was working on TOH Novel seemingly along side it, it especially feels even less a spiteful take that against Disney, and more about how what happens when we let a giant corporation gain more monopoly over everything.

    Opinion
  27. I'm looking forward to new Knights of Guinevere episodes and want to see indie animation continue to thrive. What I'm not looking forward to is the inevitable bad faith discourse, hatedom, and toxic fandom that always happens with indie and animated shows.

  28. @mythicsnake.bsky.social

Exactly!!! I never understood the complaint from people who kept referring back to the original pilot as if that one single episode was some sort of marble chiseled template for the entire series. It is SO much better in its current form. If you don't like character drama & dick jokes, bye Felicia.

  29. @cdtcharles.bsky.social

I really enjoyed it for the most part. Peter & Uncle Ben feel the most realistically written, and “power & responsibility” is reengineered in a clever not-too-cynical way. The gore is great too, Oscorp is literally Umbrella Corp lol My kinda minor but specifically glaring problem lies in Felicia.

I haven't seen a Tom Cruise movie since Minority Report in 2002. And I like that one, but that was enough Cruise for me. 😂
