25 years ago a friend gave me The Beauty of the Husband, and I fell in love with Carson's work, devouring Eros the Bittersweet, The Autobiography of Red, her translations of Euripides and Sappho and the many essays and poems she's written since. Great news on a grey day.

For no particular reason I today translated my 30-ish years old unstarted epic poem, The one-legged knights of Grôt, from Norwegian into English. The one-legged knights of Grôt In the valley of death, back to back the two. One with a sandal, the other a shoe. #writing
today's book i'm trying to get my uni to buy for me is "Notes of a Crocodile" by Qiu Miaojin, translated by Bonnie Huie, after reading Chih-Chen Tsai's paper "Homosexuals Tragedy and Spiritual Love: The Animal Image, Gender Politics and Symbolic Affect in Notes of a Crocodile and Last Words from Montmartre by Qiu Miaojin"
I found an old, I mean *old* notebook in which 10yo me started writing a story. It's SF with hovercrafts and spaceships and lasers and basically all the cool tech from Star Wars, but in a different order. And not one character. Except maybe the speeder. That speeder saw some shit, man.
I love books and libraries! I'm a big reader of fiction, though I'm increasingly a fan of littler books and novellas particularly now I'm an MSP 📚 Today, I'm joining thousands across Scotland enjoying a #WeeRead with the Scottish Library & Information Council. Reading for pleasure brings massive benefits to people, including reducing stress and supporting learning. Ok. So I have finished Threshing Day by Rebecca Yarros. My sister gifted my Fourth Wing a couple of years ago and I once again fell in love with fantasy. Threshing Day is a novella as part of the larger series and it is excellent. And! I don't normally like college-esque-based books!
Four years ago, I used to be a librarian. When they gave us complementary books at book fairs, they were newer books… Not 20 year old books, unless it was a special reissue. Like new art, new cover, an unabridged version or something. Maybe things have changes since then… But I kinda doubt it.
When I did my poetry PhD I had a professor who would just read us Anne Carson bits out loud and tell us to write them down. I learned so much about writing and poetry and words and thinking.
I'm rereading a horrible series of caveman romance novels that was published between 1980-2011 and I read some Amazon reviews that called it feminist slop Which is funny bc in the book universe numbers were invented so cave women would know when their periods are coming
I'm working my way through the Discworld series again, and discovering there are books I thought I'd read but hadn't. I'd somehow missed Maskerade (why isn't it more popular with musical theater nerds?) and I definitely THOUGHT I'd read Jingo, but I'm finding I recognize almost none of it.
Finally bought a Kobo e-reader today. Been using #kobo and gradually moving my novels from KU to #KoboPlus owing to the USA / billionaire situation. I have been reading them on my tablet with the app, but wanted something I could use less clumsily in bed, since I read a lot. So far, the reader works well. Looking forward to working my way through my digital tbr pile in more comfort. 😂 #ebooks #reading #readers #books
This whole exercise was a moon-shot at trying to make something commercial that could provide for my family. Now my son is in care and my wife, having taken the brunt of caring for a disabled child for 13 years doesn't want to deal with my disabilities any more and wants her life back. I don't blame her, but if the book isn't considered good enough to be printed, then whole point of it has been completely defeated. Now I'm paralysed waiting for a response and unable to work on it because without a literary agent willing to take it on I don't feel like I can continue writing when the pain of my family breaking up haunts me. I can't build traction alone. God I've tried but I'm just not a social person. #writing #writingcommunity #writersofmastodon #worldglass
This afternoon's writing session resulted in another 203 words added to the story in progress, as well as yet another working title — my fourth or fifth, I think. Any one of them would do, but a title can't merely do — it has to call out to me as the only possible title for that particular story.
Been reading the bible and watching theology video to do research for some worldbuilding in my book because I don't want to just depict the mainstream pop culture versions of angels, devils, and demons. I wanna do something similar to how Tolkien drew from the source material to create his races.
Woohoo! We are getting a bookstore in my neighborhood! The owner, a former librarian who has been fighting book banning, plans to specialize in books by women and minority writers.
Next yr is the 30th anniv. of walking away after an 18-wheel gas-tanker T-boned my '88 Maxima while following Phish. I'd like to publish this 52k-word memoir; a story about being 19 and invincible; about friendship; about music; about growing up. Any literary agents out there willing to chat?
Working on a new book, I just wrote a sentence that is too funny not to share: "The purpose of tests is to find defects, not to have them." I doubt that this sentence will make it into a published version of the book.
Pushed my (self-imposed) deadline for finishing this novel draft back another two weeks to the end of October. The goal is to get it finished, not fall apart trying. #WritingCommunity #SapphicFiction #AuthorLife
got kindle on my phone and realised it actually does make it way easier for me to read despite my hesitance lol.... blasted through there is no antimemetics division in about a week
Been working on a new story.. I don't even care if it's going to be good or not: it's just so good to have the feeling again, of a story bubbling inside you, just aching to get out.
Oh yeah, that book I bought about making soft toys. Might have found a project for the hoodie I want to use up.
Once in a while, I come across someone who’s fascinated to learn that I read books. I don’t particularly enjoy that moment, but from then on, I find them fascinating in a way that a fellow book reader would never be to me.
I submitted my first library request yesterday and first thing this morning I got an email approving the purchase. I am interpreting it as the library saying my book suggesting skills are amazing and my reading taste impeccable 😊📚 #bookstodon #library
I need to find a library which has an actual copy of Chemical Titles now - I want to see what it looks like.
