Aaron Ashby exorcised some postseason demons against the Padres, his uncle's former team. In 9.1 playoff innings before this series, he had allowed 28 baserunners. 16 hits, 10 walks, 2 hit batters. This series: 5.2 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks and 0 runs. A series MVP candidate.
The Dodgers are just not as fun to hate as Peak Yankees were. Sports need villains who lean into it. Same way I feel about the Chiefs. It's more just an annoyance.
They’ve been trying to get a salary cap since before you (doesn’t matter who is reading this) were born, a group of children could win the World Series and they’d proceed like nothing happened. This isn’t a movie. Single events don’t stop people or ruin plans. They’re going lockout no matter what.
I will never forget when he basically told Andy Green to meet him outside, and then Justin Turner's face behind him. 😂 He's a terrific players manager and the last few years an even better tactician. That's my dude.
Pacers win their first of four exhibition games, 123-112 over the Timberwolves at Iowa State. Haliburton had 7/6a in 16mins. Nesmith led all with 19pts. Walker had 10a, and good 2H mins from Jay Huf (16). They shot 54% and assisted on 39 of 48FGs. But 20 TOs. Next: Sat. v ATL
Every day the Red Wings/Edvinsson saga drags on, the more weird CBA things could happen - if Ed doesn’t sign by Dec 1st, he can’t play this year - if Ed doesn’t play this year, I don’t believe he’s eligible for arbitration rights next year (check me @jjfromkansas.bsky.social or @thestanleycap.com)
the way basketall does timeouts is genuinely so antiquated it feels like the 1960s on the court we have technology this should not be that fucking hard the officials should never be the potential point of error any coach/player/viewer should be able to within seconds check the status visually.
The Dream just defeated the Liberty in an epic overtime thriller at State Farm Arena. Next season, they're set to play every home game there. @michaelwaterloo.bsky.social on the announcement and how they're "learning more in terms of what this market will bear" as they compete in the playoffs:
I’m an absolute idiot and forgot my own newsletter today where i specifically said one team did force a game 5, Phoenix in the 2018 semis, because the fact that no one ever did it in the Finals has become an intrusive thought. Shouts to @sabreenajm.bsky.social for reminding me of 2018
Tatis ending the season (probably) playing 2nd base is a great example of how patchwork this whole season has been.
Wednesday’s was the first postseason series win for #Rays since 2020 ALCS, when they beat #Astros in 7 games. Is 3rd time TBR has passed the ALDS (also 2008 and 2020, reaching World Series both times).
Good read (from 10 years ago) on Bill Kennedy, the ref at last night’s Wolves preseason game in Iowa
I did 146 postcasts this season, wrote over 170 scouting reports and game stories, and spent countless hours writing and talking about the Atlanta Braves. What a season! Can't believe it's over, but I'm thankful to all of y'all who came along for the ride.
watching the phillies do nothing with trades makes me feel okay that the eagles are very proactive with trades and change
Reading this list put in perspective how much top-level U-22 talent is in this league. The players ranked 18th and 19th here could easily be 1st and 2nd on another analyst’s board.
Officials should definitely have a working understanding of each team’s remaining timeouts so they can call a technical if a team calls timeout when they have none. However… A coach should also know that about his or her own team. Or someone on the coaching staff should.
when Max Muncy - at the time a 25-year-old barely-playing utility guy for a bad Oakland A’s team with a .611 career OPS - was released the day before the 2017 season started, I smiled widely and confidently stated “he will end his career with at least as many postseason home runs as Albert Pujols”
What the Valkyries have accomplished as a franchise for just two years in *this era* of WNBA talent is insane, man. Elite-level team building.
Miles Kelly with the team-high 24pts on 6/11 3PT. He shot 39% in the GL last year on almost 300 attempts. If you want to know what the Dubs are prioritizing in Santa Cruz this year developmentally? It's movement shooters. Cryer, Kelly, Chance McMillian, Tyler Burton, etc
My favorite part of being a baseball fan is how exceptional the league is at making sure we are discussing potential work stoppages at a time when the very best teams are fighting for the World Series. No other league does this.
The growth of women's soccer worldwide needs careful collaboration to make sure players are not overloaded by increasing competitions, National Women's Soccer League Commissioner Jessica Berman said on Wednesday. www.reuters.com/sports/socce...
On Saturday, SC Vistula Garfield beat FC Motown in a 2027 US Open Cup Qualifying match that needs to discussed. It included; broken nets, concussions, a red card comeback, & more. A plea, you need to read about this #USOC2027 match on @nysoccerjournal.com: www.nysoccerjournal.com/sc-vistula-g...
Everyone will be talking about the interference call but nobody will be talking about the clutch challenge by Hicks one batter before which directly saved one run and may have eventuallly saved more.
One of my favorite parts of a new NBA season is seeing what young players make a leap. Outside of having an MVP candidate, it's become one of the most important features of a contender.
Not to rain on the parade, I love a cheap hot dog and a promotion, but this, and the discount deal I received in my text messages, are almost certainly because this game is failing to sell due to the fact that the ticket prices went up and it’s the Canucks, right? #LetsGoCanes
Rick Carlisle and Tyrese Haliburton questioned the hostile reception, but the former Purdue star enjoyed it. More on Iowa State fans booing Braden Smith relentlessly👇 www.si.com/nba/pacers/o...
Watching LVA/GSV tonight and thinking again about how the Atlanta Dream wore t-shirts encouraging fans to vote for the US senate candidate running against their owner. And then the owner lost and sold her stake in the team! Absolutely GOATed shit.
Idk if I'm in a position to write it, but I would LOVE to read something about how professional athletes are a canary in the coal mine for conspiracy theories bc they have way too much free time on their hands. Seems like young players in the NHL and NFL in particular believe some crazy shit.
Another mlb coverage observation: If this was the nba Aaron judge would be getting called soft for not playing and be not a winning player (hasn’t won the division in 7/10 years in the league) but mlb is charmin soft on its player criticism
Milton Williams credits his father's relentless work ethic — driving trucks overnight, missing sleep — as the foundation of his NFL career. “That’s a part of me and my work ethic. That’s where it all comes from.” Read: www.masslive.com/patriots/202...
I used to be worried that an MLB stoppage would mean ESPN parachuting all of their MLB guys into college baseball coverage, but they've fired most of them. Ben McDonald is gonna get a ton of national work this spring.
The extremely thin Warriors trail 57-50 at halftime in Portland @nbcswarriors.bsky.social Brandon Williams: 15 points, 6-of-9 shooting, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers Warriors are 7 of 15 from 3-point range (46.7%) But they already have 13 turnovers for 16 Blazers points
This is my position. How can they determine whether he would have caught it or not. Batter should be out automatically and runners returned to where they were. (Of course, IDK what the text of the rule says – I'm just proposing an equitable solution.)
Honestly really really cool that the Houston Texans org has spent lots of money to help grow flag football for girls in Texas. You never want to hand it to the McNairs, and yet:
the Yankees have lost, the universe is unfolding as it should apnews.com/article/yank...
Not sure how there was this much miscommunication. Either way, if the coaching staff didn’t inquire that’s a problem. If the coaching staff did inquire but didn’t know because they didn’t track their TOs, that’s a problem. If the staff did track TOs & didn’t force the issue, that’s a problem.
