Climate litigation The climate harms of fossil fuels can no longer legally be ignored. "Australia’s highest court has just delivered its first-ever decision in a climate case. And it could sour the economic argument for developing new coal and gas projects in New South Wales, and possibly Australia." "Climate litigation involves taking governments or companies – and occasionally individuals – to court in a bid to hold them responsible for climate harms.Climate litigation is used because a court can legally require governments and companies to act, in a way that community opposition or political pressure can’t.

It is particularly effective where government regulation is slow, weak or missing altogether." "Community groups now have a clear, High Court-endorsed basis to challenge approvals where authorities haven’t properly assessed a project’s full carbon footprint". "And last year, the International Court of Justice found countries are legally required to assess the effects of fossil fuel projects, both in their own jurisdictions and overseas." >> theconversation.com/australias… #FossilFuels #litigation #ClimateLitigation #coal #harm #NSW #law #governance #WillfullyIgnorant #climate #GHG #ICJ

It's nice that we're at least going back to installing heat pumps, but it's frustrating to see that heat pumps with a reversing valve so that they can also cool are not part of the discussion. I get that we're trying to avoid adding even more peaks on an already full grid, but heat waves are going to be a serious problem, and I don't see how we can get away from actively cooling homes in the worst heat waves. We should be talking about this. Then at least we could do things like regulate air con in moderate heat. nos.nl/artikel/2633964-kabinet…

  30. It looks like the #Atlantic storm season may finally produce a #hurricane In the modern hurricane record—an era dating to about World War II—there has never been an Atlantic season without a hurricane, and no season has gone this late without one forming. Two years, 1907 and 1914, no hurricanes were recorded. However, that does not mean there were no #hurricanes. Before aircraft flew across the Atlantic, our records almost certainly missed hurricanes over the open ocean. arstechnica.com/science/2026/1…
