On what I was going to call "a lighter note" before realizing it really isn't, I just finished Chris Jennings's sweeping END OF DAYS, about Ruby Ridge and the apocalyptic faith that fueled it. I really enjoyed it! It's a great look at the conspiracy-brained history of this country.
I particularly liked a quote from a poem that she quotes towards the end something along the lines of "keep your heart so soft that even the most careless of hands cannot break it"- there's a hopefulness in that.
My latest for @theguardian.com, a longer review of Patricia Lockwood's return to poetry after a long time; tl;dr – it's good. But do read the piece! www.theguardian.com/books/2026/o...
This is good. Untitled Ape's Epic Adventure by Steven Tillotson. Recommend to me by the much missed GN expert Steve Walsh who a couple of you may have known. The artwork is great. The story is perhaps a little dry for a 13yr old but there's an almost 100% chance I'm over thinking.
I finally got to talk with Matt Emmons, the artist behind The Council of Frogs, one of my favorite graphic novels of the last few years. I'm so happy with how this interview turned out. If you like dark fantasy with a lot of heart, check out his work. #comics @secondatbest.bsky.social bit.ly/4i6EFTI
Bernard Wolfe’s LIMBO is a strange and powerful novel.
This is honestly a ripping fantasy series with incredible but not overwhelming worldbuilding, a complex and intertwined plot, mashed up genre combinations and spectacular characters. Really one of my favorites of the last decade.
Metal from Heaven rips and kicks ass.
If you want something good to read this Halloween, check out this anthology. amazon.com/Annual-Creatures-Cr… “It also makes a great gift.” Yes, I have a story in it. #writing #reading #halloween #mdc3con
