  1. 🧵Language is a living thing; societal changes change language & changed language changes society. Take "gay." It once meant "happy, lively"; using it now as simple identifier OR slur shapes how society sees/treats the ppl who claim the word. Anthropic wants you to think A.i. is people. It is not.

  2. I've been talking to journalists a LOT recently, and it was particularly delightful to get to speak about questions of linguistics, language change and prescriptivism, for once: cnet.com/tech/services-and-sof…

  3. I never liked the language police -- people telling you what terms you had to use. For most of my life, the police were on the left. Now there are cops on the right, starting with the president. Some thoughts on this, and other matters, in my column today. www.jaynordlinger.com/p/a-presiden...

  4. #Conlangity Day 9 Started yesterday, but migraine.😖 This is where my linguistic immaturity will shine.😂 I very actively avoided grammatical gender. There is an in-world rationale in that the Istemorians as a society embrace non-binary identities, including in their gods who gave them language,🧵

I would say that multilingualism became less of a thing in Singapore when we decided to min-max everything including subjects that we study. By my generation we were made to feel that there was no point doing or learning anything unless you could get an A in it, whether it’s Malay or Hokkien or music. 7. Thus, any evaluation of LLMs that involves looking at either language produced by some software, or language input into the system for that matter, needs to be done with extreme care to avoid projecting our interpretation of the language onto the system. >>

Here’s my overarching theory on Multilingual Language Learner success in K-12 schools. When we ensure that these 3 things are in place (access, affirmation, and acceleration), multilingual language learners can and do thrive in our classrooms.

  9. I just thought of another silver lining to the whole LLM in coding thing - maybe we'll jettison all those people who ruin language design because they want the single language they can be arsed to learn to do *absolutely everything* that's ever been in any other language, over-complicating it and losing all design focus until every language looks the same without any particular intended audience anymore

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
