How it works

  1. @owen.blacker.me.uk

2 things jumped out at me about Troye Sivan's new music video. There's the "good for her!" wish fulfilment of casting a very cute Swedish actor as the man he needs to kiss and grind against. More important, though, is that he very prominently takes a dose of PrEP halfway through the video 💙💙💙

  2. One of the most significant performances I have ever seen or will ever see last night - Laurie Anderson at the Millennium Centre in Caerdydd. Mindblowing tapestry of works, expanded my understanding about what art can be. what an icon.

The thing I love about these new Beatles mixes is that because I grew up on the not good 2009 mixes, every time they do a new rerelease it feels like listening to a brand new album. It’s wild how much better they all sound now

  4. Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr w/ 'You Don't Have To Be A Star...' I had their album on vinyl in the 1970s but transitioned to CDs in the '80s & thus haven't heard the album in decades. Need to revisit. The perfection that is Marilyn and great male vocals by her spouse, both former 5D members. #AT40

  5. Went to Bluebeat DC tonight for Lady Hatchet + Dunia Best and really got up in my feels. The things you love matter. Your hobbies matter. Third spaces matter. Community matters. The people organizing all of this matter. The people performing matter. *You* matter. You're a part of this, too.

okay, real serious talk on digger: the soundtrack from cosmo sheldrake is absolutely phenomenal. avian elegy makes me want to cry because it sounds like a farewell, like we are listening to these beautiful, delicate birds moments before they are about to be rendered extinct. it is indeed an elegy

The symphony is doing The Planets tonight, and the program notes say Holst is “perilously close to being considered a one-trick pony,” which is mind-blowing to me, the concert band musician

  8. There was a time when, if a band became popular, some critics would feel compelled to dig up a superficially similar but less popular band to champion instead. This practice seems to have fallen out of favor, though, and I'm wondering why.

Rufus and Chaka Khan never scored an American #1! This list tries to redress this grievous mortal sin. Don Henley meanwhile can't shut up about sins that are not his own. humanizingthevacuum.wordpress.com/2026/10/09/r...

Had The Beach Boys not become a nostalgia act, I really do feel like they could have had an amazing career in late 70's all the way to now even. The soft rock sound they were going for on "Carl and the Passions" and "Holland" made for two really great albums that I think should be more recognized.

there are songs which became wildly popular in the UK and it is baffling bordering on homophobic that they never made a dent in the US charts and then there are songs which those people are uniquely susceptible to because of the endemic black mold

Mastodon, I'm stuck in Rexall again. Please amuse me for ten seconds by telling me about a piece of art (music, book, videogame, piece of software which seemed to you an exceptional piece of craft, industrial design, visual art, graffiti, well cooked meal) that made you Excited recently

  14. Just listened to the new Bunnymen album, and it's really good! The vibe is actually a bit closer to Ian McCulloch's solo stuff, more upbeat and lighter than Meteorites.

I don't like Steely Dan at all. To my ear everything is too smoothed out, too frictionless. As if it's suffocated in a vacuum. It's hard to explain, it's almost a claustrophobic reaction. But some people love them, and so they should. We don't need to have appointed, and approved, cultural heroes. That consensus just leads to mediocrity. Like what you like and ignore anyone who tries to tell you what good is and isn't.

  16. There's a song called "Three Princes" on the new Deafheaven EP At Work in the Field of the Bomb (out today) and I'm choosing to believe it's a spiritual sequel to the Spin Doctors' hit.

it has occured to me that hero by mili (apart from the obvious limbus connotations) literally follows the heros journey as a format for the lyrics dude oh my god i love this damn song

  18. @leighwalton.bsky.social

pedantic grievance: the music industry's move to huge "box sets" for backlist music makes some sense, and streaming access is hella convenient, but something's lost when we don't treat each album as its own unit. My brain's not built to absorb 7 straight hours of music with the same cover art

  19. @evanryt.bsky.social

I like Slow Pulp but I think in a decade this is gonna be the lane of indie that sounds the most dated to the 2020s. When you sound that much like Phoebe Bridgers, you should probably work to sound less like Phoebe Bridgers

  20. Just heard Rope. I love me some synthwave. The melody is fun and the lyrics are poignant, but something about the mixing and audio levels feels… off? I’m not even sure how to explain it. It almost feels like it’s not quite finished. I’ll probably appreciate it more in context.

that Glastonbury set of Rick Astley covering a bunch of Smiths songs really is a delight to listen to. it's an hour long but it just glides by so smoothly and joyfully that you wouldn't think they were originally sung by someone as awful and miserable and crotchety as Morrissey

forcing *every* program director to play the album version of Living For The City yes, I know it's 7:21 long, but you lose SO MUCH of the song with the single edit. a lot of the impact of the song just goes away. NEVER air the single edit, it's such a bastardization of a quite powerful song.

  23. Really excited to be at the Imperial War Museum last night for A Man From The Future. As a Pet Shop Boys fan, but also being fascinated and deeply moved by Alan Turing’s story. Genuinely one of PSB’s most accomplished and moving musical works. A wonderful evening 💚🧡 #PetShopBoys

i think alan menken disney songs are the gold standard of disney musicals. im ready to throw in the wrench and say its not worth listening to anything new from disney; the rest are meaningless, unfulfilling songs that im ok forgetting

#LastStageFits Lima Day 1 I laughed, I started this thread to look at their outfits, and in this you can only really see Jin's bejewelled crown t-shirt! #BTSWorldTour despite RMs Weverse post asking ARMY to stop hanging around outside the hotel, they don't look too tired, maybe can transfer grumpiness to a Moody Pout? 🎤 Home + Outro:Wings ( I was like, do they deserve those songs if they were hanging around outside the hotel being noisy, guess that was minority of audience...)

Artms was great :youngeunthumb: They went all in on sexy concepts for this concert. The setlist was full of slow sexy songs. Jungeunie aegyo princess of course couldn't help herself and was constantly doing cute things though :wonkekw: I was hoping she would have hair extensions in since she cut off her beautiful hair but no.. Yerim had to perform eclipse in her place since Jungeun can't do the hair flips :chuukek2:

I have entered the cultural mainstream and listened to Choosin' Texas. My verdict: better than I thought but kind of a boring throwback. Clear appeal to older country fans and probably dominated country radio as a result. Wrap it up.

there's a trend on twitter rn about some podcast making a democratically determined top 200 emo album list, and while there's plenty of "this isn't real emo" or "this should be much higher/not on the list" discourse, i appreciate everyone sharing their favorite albums so i can listen to new stuff

  32. My hot music take is that lyrics alone do not make good music. The voice is just one instrument among many, and first and foremost it has to sound good. You can have good music without vocals, but music with only lyrics is just poetry.
