A veteran social worker once described Aotearoa's gangs to me as "organised poverty", & said working in rural communities meant working with them. The more poverty we have, the stronger gangs will get & the more this government will demonise them. Hipkins is, to put it politely, a naive fool. #nzpol

We moved to Taff's Well six years ago. Since then we've had record floods, droughts, record-breaking heatwaves and wildfires. The woods were clear-felled because of an invasive fungus. And now the river is polluted !!! 😢 💔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

'Commercial in confidence' is an accounting trick as much as it's a performative legal fiction, to wit: C-I-C is a L-I-E. Gov. is structured as if it's a business - the ultimate Public business - & a cent of Public money spent is accountable to all shareholders. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Teaching children they can say no to a hug, even from someone they love, is basic bodily autonomy. It casts no suspicion on grandparents. Dreadful response from Jim O’Callaghan and Peadar Tóibín. Children build confidence by having their boundaries respected, not by being told adults know best.

  12. In the early 1980s, National PM Rob Muldoon met Black Power, helped them find housing and paid gangs to chop firewood. Today's National banned their patches. The gang list grew anyway: 10,478 in February, up 6.5% on a year earlier. Gangs recruit wherever hope is in short supply. #nzpol

I've already reposted this, but I think it's worth dwelling on. As far as lies go - albeit watered down by "several" - this is a fairly ancient smear reminiscent of dirty tricks played by the Tory press and Tory party a century ago. 29. “An institutional certainty that this inability is neutrality” might be the most accurate description of NZ media I’ve ever read. culture-centered.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-...

The record here is long and consistent. A Māori MP's tie became a national story. A Māori foreign minister's face was discussed as a diplomatic variable. Every Māori politician in this country gets asked, sooner or later, to account for a relationship no Pākehā politician is ever asked about, and the question is always framed as a reasonable one about standards. The reason it is always framed that way is that the people framing it have never had to explain their own cousins to a camera. Senior editorial judgement in New Zealand newsrooms sits overwhelmingly in Pākehā hands, and the judgement in question is not malice. It is the plain inability to see that a room full of Māori men might contain anything other than a threat, combined with an institutional certainty that this inability is neutrality.

Cutting back services puts at least as much cost on future generations as new taxes. It should be a really easy argument to run. But really, only the Greens and TPM are.
