  1. Farage has called Burnham a “liar” for saying Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum. But Farage’s own argument confuses three very different things: attempted interference, actual influence activity and changing the referendum result. Let’s examine the evidence. 🧵

PURL is fully foreign funded, and goes directly to US businesses. This isn't aid, its literally a free $6.7bn subsidy to the US defence industry. This isn't a threat to aid. They're treating to cut off their own industry to protect a tiny diesel deal with russia.

When threats drive people out of office, our democracy is in trouble. It’s a threat to every American’s right to be represented without fear/intimidation.

I remember being in London, a few years ago, at a "drinks do" surrounded by journalists and the "well connected". I said to one now-high profile journalist, I thought Brexit was a Russian intelligence coup using social media against us. They made excuses and got away from me like I was a lunatic.

Andy Burnham has said very little at all about Russian interference in the Brexit vote and he certainly hasn't suggested it was in any way decisive. He hasn't even said which way Russia tried to push it. All he's said is there's evidence it happened. It's interesting how Brexit types are responding.

Finally, a UK Prime Minister recognises the role Russia has been playing in UK politics and beyond. The key question though is how to push back against it - the answer I think is dealing with bot accounts on social media but also putting pressure on Facebook and Musk's X platform.

The synthesis take is that yes the Russians absoutley intervened in Brexit and tried to play it to their advantage, as they do every election but that they didn't really need to try *too hard* because of decades of anti-immigrant bilge, misinfo about the EU and the rise of English nationalism

This is a point that @jamellebouie.net has made, but if Dems win a majority in congress, it will be because voters are angry at the current administration and want them held accountable. Bowing to calls to “turn down the heat” will be a betrayal of the reason voters elected them.

The demand to prosecute federal agents is problematic because it advocates a carceral approach to address a carceral problem. The other demands, however, are justified and constructive. Blowing up Russian data centers works for Ukraine in two ways. It reduces Russia's ability to coordinate complex attacks or defenses. It silences online political voices in the West that support Russia in the war, most of which come from Russian data centers.
