I was just searching for lists of 5-letter nouns. Of course, Google AI pushed its way to the top of the results to offer, among others, 'allow', 'drench', 'script', and 'flight'. Thanks HAL, you're an indispensable, stone-cold brain trauma.

Because the techies who are vaunting #GenAI and hoping that the malevolent Trump government helps to prop up the sagging fad (that's always been the ultimate daydream of #tech weenies, being propped up by the government, as with the tax-preparation #software grift) are the stupidest geniuses on Earth, they're easily dazzled by extremely unimpressive LLM feats.

But it's far worse than that: because these techies know NOTHING outside their narrow range of increasingly obsolescent technical expertise, because the elite #programming folks are more than likely to know NOTHING about writing or painting or translation or any of the other things that they're convinced ought to be taken out of the hands of sheeplike humanity and given to their "AGI superintelligence", these high-tech clowns seem unable to realize the degree to which LLMs are very obviously far worse than human beings at basically everything. Needless to say, high-tech #journalism of the @arstechnica sort has also failed to notice just how far short LLMs actually fall. And I'm not just talking about the confabulation, or "hallucination" as the tech weenies incorrectly call it, because they know zero about psychology beyond memorizing a lot of fancy words from medical literature. Ars Technica and @Businessweek et alii faithfully transmit the wide-eyed stupidity of #technology leaders into print, accepting their "optimism" at face value and thereby ripping up journalistic ethics and throwing them in the trash. Probably all the journalists of Ars Technica &c. are on the take, hoping to get rich themselves through #investment in high-tech fads, and thus their reportage is hopelessly corrupt. (etc.)
Take the business of the falsely named "hallucinations". Why haven't @arstechnica etc. pointed out that the word "hallucination" has been wrongly applied? I can think of one reason: applying the correct word, "confabulation," means having some understanding about how the LLMs stochastically compose their output, shoving truths and falsehoods together (i.e. "confabulating") without limit because the machines are not actually meant to think because thinking is slow while confabulation is very fast.

This by the way is also how Donald Trump can keep burbling away for hours: he's confabulating, witlessly assembling an infinite sequence of falsehoods and personal fantasies leavened with crumbs of truth, and thus he's remarkably like an #LLM in action. I suppose that's another thing that the usual tech journalist doesn't want to think about, the fact that Donald Trump burbles nonsense through basically the same process as an LLM. There's no gargantuan task of journalistic labor required to fact-check how the GenAI fraudsters are abusing the English language. It would have been very easy for Ars Technica et alii to squelch the lie about "hallucinations" right from the start, and yes this is lying: deliberately using the wrong word, clearly with some hope of trivializing and minimizing the LLMs' designed-in failure to distinguish fact from falsehood, is fraudulent and treacherous. But hardly anyone allowed to function as a prominent tech journalist is going to permit themselves to point out that technology executives are peddling fraudulent claims. Why, that would hurt the #economy! (i.e. the tech journalist is thinking of the value of their portfolio, rather than the public's right to know the truth.) (more)
I’m not into AI. I’ve played with one local model a bit. I’ve been given unlimited use of Claude at work (I don’t really use it other than for a “morning brief”). Gemini occasionally gives me a sensible answer. The time to be anti-AI is over. The circumstances where AI is an undeniable benefit are crystallising in professional workflows and it’s touching more on personal, day-to-day stuff mainly by dint of Gemini butting in when you search Google. We can still rightly protest the horrific…
