About Wildroot

Small project.
A wider web.

An independent browser project bringing useful names, connected tools and a more capable workspace together.

The browser and the service.

Wildroot is the software you install. HNS.ONE is the service behind hosted names, mail and social accounts, and the home of the technical documentation.

The naming root is Handshake. Wildroot’s desktop can verify naming information against that network and check supported certificate pins. A free hosted name still depends on the service that operates its zone; local verification does not remove that dependency.

Built on open-source work.

  • Agregore — the browser Wildroot is derived from, under AGPL-3.0.
  • Electron and Chromium — the desktop browser platform and web engine.
  • IPFS / Kubo — content addressing and retrieval.
  • GoToSocial and atproto — hosted social infrastructure.
  • Navidrome — the supported local music-library app.

These projects retain their own licences and credits. Wildroot’s interface uses Instrument Sans and Newsreader, distributed under the SIL Open Font License.

Source and licences.

Wildroot is licensed under AGPL-3.0. To request the corresponding source for a distributed build, email matt@wildroot.io and include its version and platform. Service operators can read the self-hosting documentation.

Early testing alpha.

The desktop builds are unsigned, updates are manual and no external security audit has been completed. There is no macOS build. Android has a smaller feature set. Hosted services and storage have operational dependencies; ordinary mail is not encrypted end to end by default.

The browser is ready to explore, with those limits visible. Feedback and security reports are welcome.

Make yourself at home.
