What this is built on.

Wildroot is a desktop and Android browser made by a small independent project. It's the client half of a set of free services published at HNS.ONE, which is also where the technical documentation lives.

The naming layer

The names Wildroot opens come from Handshake, a public, permissionless naming root maintained by a peer-to-peer network rather than by a registrar. We don't ask you to care about that to use any of this, and you never need to hold or spend anything on it — but it is what is underneath, and you should be able to find that out in one click, which is why it's stated here.

Built on other people's work

• AgregoreWildroot is a fork of the Agregore browser and is licensed under the AGPL-3.0, inherited from Agregore. That means anyone who receives a build is entitled to its source.
• Electron and ChromiumThe engine, under their respective licences.
• IPFS (Kubo)Content addressing and retrieval.
• GoToSocial and the official atproto PDSThe social services, which we operate rather than ship.

Honest limits

No external security audit. No macOS build. The Android build is an early browser only. Email is not end-to-end encrypted, and a third-party provider carries it. Private DNS lookups are experimental. Every one of those is stated on the page that offers the thing, not only here.

Wildroot is AGPL-3.0. The published source repository is not up yet — until it is, the source for any build we ship is available on request at the contact address below, which is what the licence requires of us.
