Farewell to the great Tom Skerritt, whose passing was announced today. Coincidentally, he appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien exactly 33 years ago tonight. He’d just won the Emmy for Picket Fences, while Conan was in his second month as host. youtu.be/s_2Clzh7gIg?...

Probably not the first role many people think of when they see the name Tom Skerritt (August 25, 1933 – October 21, 2026), but to me he will always be Drum Eatonton, the stalwart husband of M'Lynn and goofball father of Shelby in the 1989 film Steel Magnolias (the original stage play is all-female).

Thomas Roy Skerritt (August 25, 1933 – October 21, 2026) was an American actor and director who appeared in over 170 film and television productions between 1962 and 2025. The beginning of his film career coincided with the New Hollywood movement, with a breakthrough role as Duke Forrest in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H (1970). He then starred in notable films like The Turning Point (1977), Up in Smoke (1978), Ice Castles (1978), Alien (1979), The Dead Zone (1983), Top Gun (1986), Steel Magnolias (1989), and A River Runs Through It (1992). On television, Skerritt played the leading role of Sheriff Jimmy Brock on the family drama Picket Fences (1992–1996), earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as well as two Golden Globe Award nominations. He also had a recurring role as Evan Drake on the sixth season of the sitcom Cheers (1987–1988). Skerritt was also a three-time Screen Actors Guild Award nominee, a Genie Award nominee, an American Television Award n

Tom Skerritt passed away today. Two movies of his that made a huge impression on me. Playing Duke Forrest in M*A*S*H (1970), and also, obviously, Captain Dallas in Alien (1979).

A shot from M*A*S*H: Elliot Gould on the left, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sporting some impressive lamb chop sideburns, Donald Sutherland in fatigues on the right, and Tom Skerritt in the middle looking confusedly at Sutherland.A black and white shot from Alien, with Skerrit commanding the USS Nostromo.
  4. The Alibi Room paid tribute to Tom Skerritt (on facebook). I remember looking at the scripts there so many years ago #TomSkerritt #filmsky "RIP Viper, thank you for getting us started. We still have your scripts displayed."

Speaking of PICKET FENCES, when I was younger and had no idea how rights issues worked, I always hoped that Douglas Wambaugh (played by the late, great Fyvush Finkel) would show up in one of David Kelley's later shows. Could you imagine him toe to toe with Denny Crane? Omg!

A screencap of the show PICKET FENCES. The scene takes place in the police station. Three characters are in the foreground. Tom Skerrit (RIP!) as Jimmy Brock in the center, and on the left and right sides of him are Fyvush Finkel as Douglas Wambaugh (one of the great characters in TV history) and Kelly Connell as Carter Pike, Rome's Medical Examiner. Wambaugh and Pike are facing each other in conversation, and Jimmy has his head turned, also listening to the Medical Examiner. Between Jimmy and Wambaugh you can see Lauren Holly's character Deputy Maxine Stewart looking over her shoulder at Carter. Carter must be postulating one of his out there theories again, because the look on Maxine's face is like: 'what?' Damn I miss this cast!

I’m gonna tell y’all right now without a hint of sarcasm that a whole generation of young girls were first charmed by Tom Skerritt in The Parent Trap 2, despite the world’s most awkward on-screen kiss he shared w/ Hayley Mills. He was the Wide World of Disney’s coolest dad!

  7. Tom Skerritt was one of the first actors who I learned to identify, long before I even saw him in anything. I got the novelization of Alien when it came out and read it over and over. I stared at the few pages of photos and memorized the names of the characters and actors. I was and am obsessed

Several years ago, I got to help conduct a Q&A with Tom Skerritt following a screening of a little art film he did called Alien at the Chicago Critics Film Festival. It was pretty cool. I also did a separate interview with him @ebertvoices.bsky.social This was also cool.

From Alien and Top Gun to A River Runs Through It and Picket Fences, Tom Skerritt was the ultimate screen anchor—bringing quiet dignity, warmth, and grit to over 150 roles. Taking a look back at his legendary 60-year career and extraordinary legacy:

  11. Always a long, sad day when losing a great artist, though the below piece @seattletimes.com has now been updated with reflections from Tom Skerritt himself over the years, as well as his EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS director S.J. Chiro, who shared a moving tribute that made me go to pieces📽️ bit.ly/4BtE2LV

A still from S.J. Chiro’s EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS where Seattle actor Tom Skerritt stands cast in shadow and looks out into the distance.A screenshot from an obit for Tom Skerrittin The Seattle Times that reads: For Chiro, Skerritt was more than just an artistic collaborator. When she was working on “East of the Mountains,” which centers on a daughter in her 50s trying to connect with her ailing father, she said that “life began to imitate art.” At the time, Chiro’s own father was similarly keeping much of his own failing health from her; he died four days before the film shoot was set to end. She and Skerritt ended up working through his death, and Chiro credited Skerritt with being the rock that helped her move forward with completing the production. “Tom was kind, but much like my own father, didn’t allow wallowing. He knew that focusing (on) the work, working through the scenes we were shooting that day, would be best for me. And I was grateful,” Chiro recounted.
  12. Tom Skerrit passed away. I had no idea he was anywhere near 93yrs old. I loved him as the secretive Dad in "Brothers and Sisters" and the nutty husband in "Steel Magnolias". May his memory be a blessing and may he rest in peace. www.cnn.com/2026/10/22/e...

A wonderful man and actor. Skerrit gave so much of his experience and oversight to Seattle during the years he served on the Citizen Advisory Committee to the Seattle Arts Commission, enriched theater and film here in the great Northwest and just made life a little better.

R.I.P. Tom Skerritt, gone at the ripe old age of 93. I think all the time about his final monologue to Jodie Foster in CONTACT, about the fairness of the world in which we live.

Tom Skerritt (Top Gun etc) passed away. He lived in Madison Park in Seattle and was married a Japanese-American filmmaker. My wife was friends with a Japanese woman that lived across the street, whose family Tom Skerritt occasionally invited over for dinner. My odd little tenuous connection.

  17. RIP to Tom Skerritt, a great actor who we have enjoyed in so many films, including New World's BIG BAD MAMA. My first time seeing him was in ALIEN, which helped launch him into the mainstream. He will be remembered for a lot, but we will always think of him as Angie Dickinson's hotter love interest.

  20. Tom Skerritt was a treasured guest of the Chicago Critics Film Festival. Will never forget how he came to support and encourage short filmmakers well before the Alien screening he came for. Having dinner with him is a memory for the ages. #RIP
