I was really hesitant to read #BABEL by R.F.kuang, because there has been so much hype around the author, but I’m glad I finally did. I don’t really like the fantasy genre at all -to say the least- but I can confirm that fantasy is not the driving force in the whole story. There’s a lot of bonafide history research for the world building, beside that, topics as #etymology, #translation and #colonialism are addressed in a very engaging way. #bookstodon #books

“After Puckoon I swore I'd never write another book. This is it” - Spike Milligan As a teen this was the second of Spike's books I'd ever read (first was 'Bad Jelly the Witch' at the primary school library) though by then I was familiar with the Goons, Q series, and some of his poetry. Interesting to re-read 40 years later - for me it's an improvement on first novel 'Puckoon', being a solid mix of trademark humour and genuine poignancy in parts. #books #bookstodon
Lifeguard - A Love Story by Janet Fash. First female lifeguard chief at Rockaway Beach. Memoir is half stories of Rockaway Beach in the 70s and 80s--the beach culture, the partying, the lifesaving. Second half gets into battles with a shady union boss, and feels procedural in its storytelling. Worth a read for the Rockaway lore. #books #bookstodon #nyc
Finished YesterYear and this is a satirical book that begs to be talked about, and I was so profoundly tired of it that I do not wish to talk about it in depth. The twist at the end was very boring and it's old and it's been done 10 million times. The protagonist is an unreliable narrator because she is actually mentally ill and just suffering a psychotic episode at the end of the book. I'm so bored of ableism and mental illnesses being plot twists. Everyone is talking about this book because it needs to be the center of attention. It's written in such a way as to where it is not just satire. It is provocative simply because it desires to be talked about. That is boring to me. #Books #Bookstodon
