The smolmail reference implementation, server and client, both transports, was written entirely by an AI agent from the spec document and nothing else. The logic: if one agent can build both ends of a protocol from the document alone, the document is coherent enough to build from. A security review of the result found no issues in the protocol itself, only two implementation-level gaps in the reference code.

  1. Flathub walked back their generative AI ban, replaced with a disclosure policy: gamingonlinux.com/2026/10/flat… (Well, I guess it kinda makes sense to make this change, even if it seems like a dumb pro-AI move at first, because the previous policy was kinda vague, they already made some exceptions with more mature AI written or assisted apps, but it wasn't really obvious what they considered mature. I guess the current one makes a bit more sense, that they determine whether an app should be allowed, on a case-by-case basis, filtering out only obvious, low-quality slop (let's assume that reviewers will be judging things objectively))

🚀 AI-Powered Open-Source Alternatives Are Taking on Microsoft Office The developer behind ArtCraft, a project creating free alternatives to Adobe software, is expanding into Microsoft’s productivity suite with three new open-source applications built with AI assistance. • GridCraft: An alternative to Microsoft Excel • DeckCraft: An alternative to PowerPoint • WordCraft: An alternative to Microsoft Word The developer, Brandon Thomas, used Anthropic’s Claude to help build these applications and has made them available through GitHub. The project reflects a growing trend: AI coding tools are enabling developers to build software that once required significantly larger teams and budgets.

Why this matters: • Open-source alternatives could reduce software licensing costs. • Cross-platform compatibility could give users more flexibility, including on Linux. • AI-assisted development is lowering barriers to building complex applications. • Subscription-based software vendors may face increasing competition from community-driven alternatives. ⚠️ These applications are still works in progress and are not yet full replacements for their commercial counterparts. Security, reliability, feature completeness, and compatibility will be critical to their long-term success. As AI-assisted development continues to evolve, how will traditional software vendors differentiate themselves beyond features that independent developers can increasingly replicate? #ArtificialIntelligence #OpenSource #SoftwareDevelopment #ClaudeAI #MicrosoftOffice #TechInnovation #AI tomshardware.com/software/micr…

A program outputting the string "Error: I experience pain" is not indicative of an Error occurring, unless that is *a priori* a possible error message. Good style dictates having some error format or metrics that can be distinguished from regular program output. It's a form of semantic typing of the text printed to the screen. If the type of the output is generated text, you cannot semantically execute "I experience pain" to mean the program has a) a sense of self, b) subjective experience, or c) feelings, in the same way that sites should not interpret quoted, non-code-type text like "DROP TABLE root" or "Execute rm -rf /" as code or instructions.
