My SW engineer friends who work in big tech in SF were telling me last night that no one at work writes code by hand anymore. AI is involved all the time, to generate the code and to review it. However, it sounded like vibe coding is involved only in a minority of cases. They got a bit shocked when I was telling them that AI use in FOSS projects is a huge source of tension right now, that some projects are shutting down or forking hard because of it. #AI #FOSS

the statement that with ai software devs can “take back the internet” and “de-enshittify the entire tech world” seems ass backwards you can’t tell Adobe “lol get rekt” when the models you’re using (especially Opus which is LITERALLY owned by Claude) belong to equally awful, data hungry corporations whose purpose is to enshittify everything. like how is fighting fire with fire gonna make the foss world a better place? #ai #adobe #claude #FOSS

  3. I came across a really great screenshot tool for #Wayland called LumineCapture. It basically has all the features of Spectacle (full screen, single monitor, window, rectangular region), but it is much faster and more lightweight. It includes a built-in editor and annotator, a color picker, a magnifying glass, and even built-in OCR for grabbing text directly off your screen. Written in #Rust, is completely #OpenSource and is very configurable. Works great on my #Fedora #KDE, but it should work fine on any Wayland setup. https://github.com/Netflate/LumineCapture #Linux #FOSS #Software #Tech

I have been wondering how companies with toes in both sides of the copyright fight [1] would respond to the recent wave of people using LLMs to effectively clone commercial software. Such as Microsoft. theregister.com/software/2026/… So one side of Microsoft is in court arguing that training and/or using their LLM is not a violation of the copyright of people who own the data their models were trained on. And now another side of Microsoft is probably wanting to start arguing in court that cloning their ~~money press~~ Office and other software using "AI" is a violation of their rights in t

With good reason, plenty of folks think of FileMaker as databases for bébés. But I was able to move everything over from my all-manual MySQL db and then conjure up a perfectly serviceable UI that a normal human could use to keep track of Elfkin’s customers, organize a catalog of couture pieces, and get a hold of my thread/bobbin inventory in a relative jiff. Yes, I know there are plenty of FOSS options out there to do the same, but I needed an easy button on this one.

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
