"Without nonfiction being made available in formats within people’s means...the idea that the reading public has been zapped of its political energy begins to look, at a minimum, over-indexed. Maybe people aren’t tired of facts. Maybe they simply can’t afford them." @tajjaisen.bsky.social nails it

In the broader scheme of things, I don't doubt this to be true. Which only reinforces how strange our store manages to be. I just looked at 45 of our bestselling 100 adult titles (not including events or bulk orders) are nonfiction. If we included events, it would be an even 50/50 split.

Megan and I (probably) won't so singlehandedly save nonfiction with @draftingthepast.bsky.social, but we are passionate about building a venue to get the word out about nonfiction history. If that's something you care about, consider a paid subscription! thewalrus.ca/nonfiction-i...

A great piece on the challenges confronting nonfiction publishing. My agent has mentioned some of this to me, but I didn’t realize it was this dire. thewalrus.ca/nonfiction-i...

As much as I love Rough Draft Bar & Books, let me reassure people who are anxious about its nonfiction sale proclomations that it's a tiny bookshop. A small sample. thewalrus.ca/nonfiction-i...

Really enjoyed this piece, which implicitly suggests another good reason to support small and university presses as much as you can: many of them are the ones willing and ready to take chances on nonfiction books that big five publishers are more than ever too scared to take on.

Given the Discourse today about nonfiction trade publishing, I'll just remind all my scholar friends that MANY university presses also do legit trade nonfiction. That's why I chose @uncpress.bsky.social for my WOXY book - it's a trade book but I wanted the freedom to publish the book *I* wanted

As many people have shared, this article was really awesome. Some find it depressing. I don't. Because I think there are plenty of solutions. I want to say I'll have time to write this up fully, but I probably won't, so a few thoughts. I agree with the bit about hardcover prices, to start.

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service.
