I’ve tried hard to stay out of this debate about AI consciousness, but I feel like I should add one thing: Take a step back from “is an LLM c***ious” for a sec. What’s at stake is the Yes people claiming that turning off an LLM is in fact a crime: of murder.

i would even go so far as to make the claim that LLMs will eventually be understood as proof of this

Again, some people apparently need reminders that LLMs are simulators. They simulate human responses because human inputs are what the prediction models are trained on. Like, we all understand that the ray tracing in Doom Eternal doesn't mean your GPU has actual light sources inside it

I do believe this is the single most important point to be made about LLMs - we assign meaning to words, regardless of how the words were generated. Humans have intent and meaning to communicate, LLMs give us what amounts to a nicely arranged bouquet of flowers. Pretty. Maybe it's ikebana ?

  8. thinking about this (the opening statement) i kind of think llms encourage you to be *more* of yourself if you're lazy and incurious, it can make you more of that if you're a workaholic, it can give you more work if you're interested in things, it can help you find out more about them

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
