And paying $20 for a cleaning and nothing at all for X-rays for dental stuff. Insane. I got a chipped tooth filled for only $70 rather than the hundreds without it. All this to say: if you have insurance, please use it. Life without it can be brutal, and you don't have to suffer if you do have it.

Here's a great letter from Susan Jones (a retired insurance underwriter) on why the NHS will *always* cost the UK less than a private health insurance system; which emphasises that those arguing for such a shift are either misinformed, or (more likely) just do the bidding of their corporate sponsors with little actual interest in the UK's fiscal politics. The ACA did FAR more than create insurance marketplaces. It also imposed protections on traditional health insurance, including employer plans. It protects millions of Americans who have never purchased insurance through an ACA marketplace.
