beyond parroting the greek miracle component of white supremacy, Rubio also presents a version of Greek thought that has neither the delphic imperative of self-knowledge nor the corrective warning of "nothing to excess"
Also, fwiw, I find ancient Greek individuality easy to overstate: only for adult citizen males, of course, but also even citizens really didn't have any rights the community was bound to respect. It's an individualistic society by pre-modern standards, but I wouldn't say fiercely so.
The best summary I've read of Rubio's grotesque speech in Athens: "With a dramatic view of the Parthenon in the background, Rubio delivered 25 minutes of kitsch. It was the classics as learned through memes by a groyped-up staffer" www.unpopularfront.news/p/the-greeks... @lioneltrolling.bsky.social

🚨RUBIO GOES FULL DICTATOR: Standing beneath the ancient ruins of the Parthenon in Athens, Donald Trump’s Secretary of State delivered what can only be described as a chilling tyrant’s manifesto—openly demanding the “unapologetic pursuit of national power” #USA #Trump #uspoli youtu.be/365dWR1snTg

90% of how Rubio described “the West” while in Athens (e.g., "fierce individuality,” “relentless ambition”) is just a rehashing of ideas plucked from Ayn Rand. Encouraging people to “ethical egoism” is how we got this level of inequality—which now sits at a higher level than Ancient Athens ever had.

This new album by Penny Loafer is amazing if you dig the breeders and silversun pickups and I do. Hope to catch them live in Athens soon, I know two of em from grocery store.

Ayn Rand expert here. No, these guys are not Objectivists. They’re collectivist nationalists, and any rhetoric about individualism is pretty transparently fake.
Okay, settle down strip mall parking lot sunset
In his speech, Rubio said: 'the most commonly cited author in the Federalist Papers was Plutarch, the Greek biographer of Greece & Rome’s great men'. Plutarch possessed a heart finer & grander than MAGA nationalism. Plutarch was a civic benefactor. He loved his city. But he was also a Platonist...

'Fierce individuality' is a questionable description of any Greek state, but even if you think Athens came closest to it, how typical was Athens? Sparta definitely didn't go in for it (& was keen on infanticide as a way of getting rid of sickly infants...). Lots of other cities ruled by 'tyrannoi'.
I really don't care for this Gargoyle woman.

Rubio going to Athens and cribbing from statue-avatar posters on X reminds me that this is the guy who said "we need more welders and less* philosophers." *fewer, obvs And yes, he specifically sneered that "the market for Greek philosophers has tightened over the last 2,000 years.”
