I'm tentatively understanding the news about LLMs offering barely comprehensible solutions to hundreds of hard maths problems in the following way. #Maths is symbol manipulation according to set rules. You can do this task by training an LLM on a lot of maths writing. You don't actually have to understand maths to do maths, as long as you stick to the symbol manipulation rules. Nor does an LLM understand the Python code it generates. #llm #ai #coding #math
Today's #mathober prompt is Simple Pole, and I've done a little maths zine explaining what one is. (PDF to follow when I get near a scanner).

It's the 11th of #mathober and today I have made a little zine about the Problem of Points, which I'd never heard of but has quite a cool story! (PDF to follow later when I'm near a scanner.)

Math? You mean AI slop? 😏
arxiv.org/abs/2610.08144 is interesting read about the navier stokes #math #ai result. I guess it must be relevant to the recent math dump

#Fuel #Math Trump's "deal" with Russia, the one that breaks two laws, is a fantasy. The diesel being released, "800,000 tons by November", is going to be distributed to the USA 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. Some mathematics: At 7.07 lbs/gal (standard EIA Reference figure) gives 226,308,345 US gallons being distributed 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘦. According to the EIA, the total U.S. diesel consumption averages approximately 3.9 to 4.0 million barrels per day. A barrel is 42 US gallons. That means the US 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦 consumes 163.8 million US gallons of diesel 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘺. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝘄

Can sine waves draw a triangle? The trace is created by combining sine waves on the X and Y inputs of an oscilloscope. Tune them correctly, and the curve forms a triangle. Oscilloscopia is a puzzle game built on an oscilloscope. #math #physics #oscilloscope #mathgames #puzzlegames

It just occurred to me that we don't know how OpenAI chooses the problems it asks its LLMs to solve. Since [assuming bad faith is sinful, but often accurate](st.ilsole24ore.com/art/notizie/...), I wonder the following: #MathSky #LLM
Was talking w some colleagues the other day and we came to the conclusion that, at this point, AI-generated Lean code adds almost zero to our confidence that the stated results are correct and correctly proved. (We already knew it added zero to our understanding.) #MathSky
Came across a guy on TikTok who creates tools for teachers. This site is great for creating diagrams. Best one I've come across. Will be using it for lessons and assessments. mathfigures.com E.g. angles on parallel lines in the pictures. @mathsjem.bsky.social #MathsToday
Recent math stuff -> prediction: the world will fill with wildly complicated apparatuses beyond any human comprehension, not because they couldn't be made simple enough for us to understand, but because they work and the robots get them just fine and the reduction is bottlenecked by human time
I don't understand maths at all, not beyond a primary school level anyway. Nor do I understand any of the AI + Maths news. But I offer my sword to the number nerds against our common enemy, the oligarch-pervert-silicon-valley nerds
Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
